Introduction

Hi guys, and welcome to my Sion guide! This guide will show how to use Sion, tricks you can do with him, and why you should use him. Oh and by the way...I've played Sion since the rework and I've played League ALSO since the rework, so basically s5. Anyways, lets get to it!

Pros / Cons

  • Very bulky
  • He has plenty of CC to stop your opponent
  • Deals mixed damage
  • Has an AP varient
  • He can setup ganks for the ally JGler very well

Cons
  • Has a problem with mobility
  • He can get kited pretty hard
  • Easily ganked
  • Has no reliable escape other than his ult
  • Consumes mana like crazy early game

Spells


You know to take this. At least I hope you do.

Pretty much every top laner takes Teleport, and Sion is no exception. This is nice to get to lane faster, and it's good for objective control.

You CAN take this, but I would only take this if I was facing someone like Garen.

Items

A Black Cleaver is never a bad idea on Sion when running AD. It gives CDR, HP, and a pretty good AD buff early game. It works with most, if not all Sion builds.

The Titanic Hydra is great to have on Sion. With it you deal damage based on your health, 1% to a primary target and 2.5% in a cone behind them to be exact with the active increasing this. Sion builds a lot of health so you'll be doing a lot of damage with it.

Frozen Heart is an item I don't always get, but can be very useful. It helps [sion] out since he has mana problems, it also gives armor and lowers the attack speed of enemy champs by 15%. It's nice to have overall.

Those three items are the most practical items for a standard tank build, for example build #1.

Other Items that Work


Maw of Malmortius is a good offensive item to AD Sion. I would only pick this up if my laning partner had high armor. It also gives MR, so it does give some bulk to you.

Banshee's Veil is a good substitute for Spirit Visage. It gives a good amount of health, MR, and it also gives 100% health regen. It also grants a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. I like the CDR from [spirit visage] but this is also a good item to.

Ravenous Hydra is a wonderful item to have on Sion. The life steal you get from it is nice and makes him live more trades. It also gives health regen and the active increases the life steal. I would only get this item it I was going with a more offensive Sion build like build #2.

Trinity Force is an item I never thought would work on Sion, but it does. It gives mana, CDR, HP, attack speed, and it also gives you crt. This item can be swapped out for Black Cleaver in really any of the build's I suggested. Credit goes to ShoneKraljina for suggesting this item.

Abilities and Explanation

The mixed damage Sion can deal is amazing.
His passive is Glory in Death. Every time he dies, he comes back with increased movement speed, attack speed, and deals 10% of the target's max health as on=hit damage. He also is healed completely, his health rapidly decaying over time. This passive isn't great, but it isn't bad either. It can literally tear the enemy's health bar apart...if they stay there. They're most likely going to reposition themselves before you even get to them, unless they have NO IDEA what your passive does. It can be a game changer to. I've literally gone to the enemy nexus before, hitting it when it's low. They might be able to kill me, but my passive will come up and give me the attack speed I need to quickly take down the nexus.

His Q is devastating smash. I'm sorry for the math that's about to bombard you. It's a ability that has to be channeled, that's and AoE knock-up. If interrupted it's cooldown is reduced by half. If it's instant-casted, then it only slows and does very minimal damage. If you slam the axe to the ground, depending on how long it's been charged, it does a minimum of 20-100 +.65% per AD to a maximum of 60-300 +1.95% per AD. Also how long the knock-up lasts for depends on how long you've channeled it. This ability is fun to use. It can plenty of AD, and the knock-up is nice to. This is also the finisher to your combo, and don't expect to land the full blunt of the ability all of the time as they can just walk out of the area and you'll waste mana. A helpful tip for using this is that when you're in bush, they can't see the "AoE lines" as I like to call them. This is a good way to surprise them and catch them off-guard.

Next we have his W Soul Furnace. This is the reason why you do so much mixed damage. Passively, for every minion you kill you gain +2 to your max health. This is increased to +10 when you kill a big minion or when you get an assist for killing a champion/killing a champion. When active, it creates a shield as grey health for 10% of your max health +40% of your AP. After 3 seconds you can recast it to make an AoE blast around you that deals 40% of your AP +10-14% of their max health. This is great. This makes you SO bulky in lane that it's stupid. It also can deal a TON of damage. By the way, you can cast this ability when you're in the middle of your other abilities. For example, you can cast this when your channeling your Q.

Now we have his E Roar of the Slayer. It's a single line skill-shot, dealing 70-210 AP +40% of your AP, as well as lowering their movement speed and armor by 40-60% for 2.5 seconds and 20% respectively. This can be used on minions and monsters as well to launch them back and deals 91-253 AP +53% of your AP and slows them for the same amount for 2.5 seconds. The only downside is that the minion/monster can't be knocked back through terrain. This ability is the bread and butter for Sion combos. It can also deal a TON of damage if you're building AP, but we're building AD so we're not gonna pay too much attention to it. It can however be maxed out first for more mixed damage, and I sometimes do this and it works. The skill sequence if maxing E first goes like this:

Lastly, we have his ult Thomas the Dank Engi- I mean unstoppable onslaght. It's a skill-shot that haves Sion charge in a direction for 8 seconds, dealing 150-450 AD +.4 per AD and knocking up enemies, slowing them if they're further away. The damage and knock-up increase over the first few seconds, capping at 200% damage and 1.75 seconds respectively. This ability has so many uses. Need an engage? There you go. Need to run away? There you go. Want to feel like Forest Gump? THERE. YOU. GO. This can be used to combo someone pretty hard, and can be used to get back to lane pretty fast. Overall a good ult if used correctly.

Combos and Tricks

Main Combo


E W Q
This combo is the combo you'll use the most. It does good damage but early game the mana cost for this combo is kind of high.

Running Man Combo


R W E Q
This is your ult combo, and this can be very devastating if the full combo is done. Remember that your W can be casted anytime during your abilities, so it's a good idea to cast your W during your ult when you get close to them.

Reverse Combo


Q W E AA
This combo can be used if they're close to you, so that way you can hit with your Q a little harder.

Team Synergy

Sion has so much potential to assist your team. He's mostly the one who engages in teamfights, and can also help lock down/slow them down for the rest of your team to catch up. These champs are but a few examples of champs that work well with him:

Yasuo is possibly one of his greatest allies. Since Sion has 2 knock-ups, and Yasuo's ult is activated through knock-ups, they go great together.

Poppy can follow up easily with any of Sion's moves, and they both seem to have great synergy together.

Since Illaoi has no reliable CC, Sion is able to aid her with this. Plus, it helps her get her E off easier, since they're slowed or they've been knocked-up by Sion.

These examples are my personal opinion, and there are others who do well with him.

Ranked Play

I feel his ranked play would be good if there wasn't so many factors to screw him over. He can be used well, but there're champs that just either counter him hard like Darius and Kayle, and champs that can do his job better in some cases like Poppy and Darius. Overall he's alright in ranked, but be advised that he's not the greatest in ranked.

Summary

I like Sion. He's been one of my mains since the beginning of my League history and he's also one of the first champs I bought. He has his downs, the fact that champs either are better than him, or have things that make him weak. He does have his ups however, being a great tank and being great in teamfights late-game. Do I recommend him? YES. Most definitely. Is he fun? Oh boy is he fun.
