Welcome to my first guide. Let me start off by saying that I am not probably the most skilled person at playing the Plank. But after looking on MobaFire repeatedly for builds for the Plank I was disappointed. Many of the guides are incomplete or push a build that I find poor.
This guide will be a pure AD build. Why? While an AS build has its merrits I find an AS Plank weaker than he could be. Give a pure AD build a try! You could very well fall in love with it like I did.
Version 1.0 - Currently running on 4hrs of sleep in 3 days so I'm sure I'll have to edit for grammar/spelling later, lol.
Pros / Cons
Burst Damage: Hits like a truck. 2-2.5k Parrrley crits
Survivability: With Remove Scurvy and Raise Morale you don't need too many defensive items.
CDR: You'll be able to use Parrrley very often.
Movement Speed: 385, not terrible since you have Raise Morale but not great either.
Slow Attacks: Slow heavy hits. Again not terrible since you can pop Youmuu's Ghostblade and Raise Morale to get +100% AS.
Mana Management: If you chain abilities you'll quickly go OOM and have to B. Luckily Plank doesn't have to chain abilities very often and a stolen blue buff from the champ you just killed will solve all your problems.
I pick up pretty basic runes.
Greater Mark of Desolation x9: Any AD champion should have these, they are a must. +14.94 ArmPen
Greater Seal of Shielding x9: MR?? Yes. My Plank build is a little squishier than I'd like so grabbing some MR will help keep you alive. Besides that they are one of the highest ranked Seals (Check out the Primary/Secondary Runes guide on MobaFire). Alternately you could grab Greater Seals of Defense for more Armor but I like the MR more personally. +16.2 MR @ 18
Greater Glyph of Celerity x5, Greater Glyph of Focus x4: CDR one of 2 stats we'll be maximizing in this guide because Parrrley should be as short of a CD as possible. CDR caps at 40%. We'll be getting 30% from items and 3% from masteries so that leaves us 7% to make up. +2.85% CDR @ 1, +7.1% CDR @ 18
Greater Quintessence of Desolation x3: More Armor Penetration. +9.99 ArmPen
Final Stats from Runes:
24.93 ArmPen, 16.2 MR, and 7.1% CDR
Before everyone starts complaining this is a VERY expensive build. But with that said this is my "wishlist" item order. In a typical game I get up to Infinity Edge before we win.
I start with a Doran's Blade. This is a very rounded item giving some survival stats and some extra damage. You could grab Doran's Shield if you find yourself too squishy at the start. No pots is ok because you'll get Remove Scurvy at lvl 2.
Boots of Lucidity: Speed will always help keep you alive and avoid ganks. Why these boots? CDR. With your Masteries and Runes your Parrrley CD will be down to 4.45s already.
Then start saving for your first B.F. Sword. Once you buy it you'll dominate opponents.
If you don't have your Bloodthirster grab it. 100 AD is AMAZING and 25% Life Steal will keep you in lane.
The next item is one I switch up depending on the game. If the enemy is building up armor to counter me I go for a Black Cleaver. If they have a fed AP carry I buy a Banshee's Veil. And if they have a fed AD carry I buy a Thornmail.
Then start saving for your Infinity Edge.
I'll build my Infinity Edge (with this my Parrrley crits can hit up to 2k+).
Then I'll go for Youmuu's Ghostblade. This will give you lots of useful stats. Most importantly it will top off your CDR, giving your Parrrley a 3.4s CD.
Then I'll go back and replace my Doran's Blade/Shield with another Bloodthirster just for good measure.
There really is no skill sequence for the Plank.
You use Parrrley on CD.
Your Remove Scurvy you save to remove stuns/snares.
Your Raise Morale you use to chase down an enemy, buff your team during a team fight, or to burn a turret.
Cannon Barrage is used at either a way to block enemy escape or gank someone in another lane trying to escape with low health. Occasionally I'll use it to help a lane that is having problems, evening a fight. Be careful not to KS from your friends or you might find yourself back in the solo queue soon enough.
There are a number of Summoner Skills that are decent for the Plank. Ignite can get early ganks for you. Flash is sure to save your life. And Teleport can help you return to your lane quickly. But my favorites are:
Exhaust: You can use it to ensure a kill on your enemy or to escape from 1 enemy. A very versatile skill. Very valuable early game with the mastery.
Ghost: Also versatile. You can chase down the enemy to finish them off. Or use it to escape. The fact that you don't have collision with units is why I like this skill more than Flash. It can also be used to return to your lane more quickly.
The Plank is one of my favorite AD carries. He hits like a truck. Sometimes my Parrrley will crit for ~60% of an enemy champion's health. To see a champion die in 2-3 hits is just fun.
