Introduction
- Hey guys and welcome to my Wukong guide!
First thing's first. Who is Wukong, and why would you play him? - Wukong is a Fighter Champion that works extremely well as a tank, bruiser, and an assassin. With so many options to play, he can fill almost any role in your team. His ultimate just destroys teamfights, and he can escape the most sticky situation through the use of tricks, jukes, and dashes.
- So what will be in the guide? This guide will mainly focus on Mid lane Wukong, but covers him going top as well. So if you are looking for an awesome champion all around then Wukong is for you! So let's get started. Below is just an example of what Wukong's play style can do.
If you still need convincing of what Wukong can do, this should change your mind.
Pros+ Has many different roles he can fill. + Can escape most situations + Extremely fun to play + Counters most other mid matchups + Destroys towers quickly + Farms well with Nimbus Strike + If timed right, Warrior Trickster can soak up ulti's like Noxian Guillotine or Dragon's Rage + Cyclone destroys teamfights. |
Cons- Prone to vision wards and oracle's to counter his Warrior Trickster - Can be hard to play - Countered easily if picked early in the draft pick - Very item dependant - Squishy early on - Cyclone can be baited for you to use if they have a knockback |
Runes
Greater Mark of Armor PenetrationArmor penetration, Gives about 13 armor penetration. A large amount of damage at early levels. It also scales well with Crushing Blow, and can give the extra needed armor penetration if maxing Nimbus Strike instead.
Armor Seals, good against ad top laners, and to protect a bit more from minions when you go into harass the enemy. It can be the deciding factor on whether or not minions kill you after they die and you are leaing with minions attacking you at about 40 hp.
Magic Resist Glyphs,Good against ap tops like Nidalee or Cho'Gath. It can also be good against ad tops who have a magic damage move like Battle Roar or if they have an ap jungler like a Fiddlesticks.
Attack Damage Quints, to increase damage on Wukong's entire skill set and give the damage early game to set up kills and assists in lane.
This ability will be your main sourse of damage if you max it over Nimbus Strike, and in my opinion you should. This move makes Wukong's next basic attack deal more damage, and reduce the armor of the enemy for a few seconds. It also restes your attack timer. The attack range on Crushing Blow is bigger than a basic attack, big enough to reach over the wall to the blue buff. |
This move will be maxed last. Although this move needs almost perfect timing to use and can turn into some epic escapes. This move can make your ganks very good as well, along with Cyclone. |
This is Wukong's initiating ability. It is not a single target move, but it does do damage the target and around it. After initial use it increases attack speed for a short duration. Max this or Crushing Blow. |
This is Wukong's ultimate ability, and one of the most powerful in the game. It completely destroys teamfights, knocking everyone up and dealing a total of around 2,500 damage if you are doing good. If you stack armor penetration, this move will crush them. Lasts 4 seconds, and during this Wukong gains movement speed. |
The scaling ad damage on this ability is better than Nimbus Strike, but the initial damage is lower. After the use of this ability, the enemies armor is lowered for a few seconds. Max this against melee mids, or if they are building armor. This ability is better for harassing and can easily set you up with kills. | The initial damage on this is better than Crushing Blow, but the scaling ad is lower. Max this against ranged mids who aren't building armor. This ability is better for farming pushing, and gives an extra boost of attack speed. |
Core Build
My favorite boots to get on Wukong, best for assassinating and getting as many Crushing Blow's as you can in a fight. There are plenty other options for boots you can get, these are just my personal favorite. |
This item is very essiential to early game and will increase your damage by a lot. If you use Crushing Blow, and along with this, you can ignore almost all their armor early enough, and can get an easy kill with Cyclone. Turn this into Black Cleaver last. |
This item gives great stats all around and is one of the best for Wukong. If the enemy just has no armor built at all this item should absolutely destroy them. Now, this item gives 40 AD, and ignores 40% of the enemies armor. Flat out, this item will destroy carries, and along with Cyclone, teamfights. |
In the latest patch, this item became stronger than Frozen Mallet in the sense of them not being slowed, but you being sped up. With phage not going into Frozen Mallet anymore it has left my build completely for Wukong. The Sheen proc stacks with Crushing Blow so get Sheen after The Brutalizer for amazing damage proential. |
Offensive options
This item is a great item all around. Usually the Rejuvenation Beads will build into this later, but I stopprd building this every game because it does not get used to its full potential along with Cyclone. During teamfights you are not going to be basic attacking too much, so the passive effect on this is not used to its highest potential. |
Take this if the enemy ap is getting some kills. Even if they aren't it is still a great item with a great passive. Especually for Wukong. It gives 55 AD and 36 MR. The great thing about it, the passive. The lower hp you are, the more damage you get. It also gives a magic damage protective shield. So while you are in the middle of the enemy team spinning like hell with Cyclone, they may be focusing you. If not great, if they are, you are getting lower and your damage is getting higher. And I mean by like 50 AD at really low hp. So they are screwqing themselves either way. |
This item along with Trinity Force will ensure noone gets away. This item gives, crit chance, armor penetration, ad, and a active that gives movement speed and attack speed for the duration. Take this if you are finding yourself chasing the last enemy left, or the last 2, and they keep narrowly avoiding the range of Nimbus Strike. |
Defensive Options
Take this item if you find youself doing badly. Replace Trinity Force with it. We take this so they are slowed after an ability we use. It also gives us the proc of Sheen, so the early game build doesn't change. |
This is what you would get if you sell Guardian Angel so you can get tankier. Also, you can get this even if you aren't getting focused on a few condition. Your tank is not, and the enemies are getting away. It is a great item and makes you incredibly tanky. |
Core Build
Top lane Wukong. unlike mid, is when I go tank. Wukong excels at being a tank because of his very strong teamfights due to Cyclone. Get these boots in order to stick to enemies through the cc that the enemies will put on you. |
This item is very essiential to early game and will increase your damage by a lot. If you use Crushing Blow, and along with this, you can ignore almost all their armor early enough, and can get an easy kill with Cyclone. Turn this into Black Cleaver last. |
Due to your tankiness, you will need some damage to provide the best ulti you can in team fights. This along with a Black Cleaver will due a great amount of damage to everyone in the fight. Whether you need to aim the carry, or peel for your own, you will get the job done with this. |
Offensive options
Only take an offensive Options if you have a tank other than yourself and need to get more damage. Other than that, you should go pure tank after the core.
This item is great for chasing down enemies and should only be bought if you find yourself chasing the last few enemies after a fight. It gives 700 hp, 20 ad, and slows enemies on every basic attack. I stopped getting this item so much after they removed Phage from its build. |
Take this if the enemy ap is getting some kills. Even if they aren't it is still a great item with a great passive. Especually for Wukong. It gives 55 AD and 36 MR. This item is great for dueling, and will allow you to chase enemies down due its new passive, which speeds you up after every basic attack. This is more of an offensive pick version of Frozen Mallet, but it provides great damage all in all. |
Defensive Options
This item wil be for when you are fighting Fizz or someone along those lines. Great active that will make them think about where they aim their initiation before you peel em off with Cyclone. |
Take this if they have a high attack speed champion like Aatrox or and adc that is doing too much damage too fast. It make you incredibly tanky, and gives enough mana for about 4 bursts and a couple ultimates. So you don't need to worry about going oom any time. |
Easy Lane. Be aggressive after level 3 when you get Warrior Trickster. Your combo will go E > Q > W > Run behind her to avoid her abilities. Now this is important, she willget used to you running behind her in your Warrior Trickster so you need to run a different direction every time, and she will only hit you if she guesses where you are going to run.Ward your lane and be careful about using Ignite and Cyclone on her due to her ultimate. |
Medium Lane. This lane may go really well, or really bad, you can use Nimbus Strike over her wall if it is up when she uses it. Ward your lane and do not get caught in her ultimate for more than a second. She will mess you up while you stay in it. |
Medium Lane.Be aggressive early and try to not use Warrior Trickster too close to her. She can use her lifesteal to heal from it, but not too much just be careful. Zone her and be sure she does not get fed. After level 6 she will get aggressive so when she uses Mark of the Assassin use your Warrior Trickster and run so she doesn't use Shadow Dance. |
Easy Lane.Pretty easy here, dodge his Pillar of Flame and use Warrior Trickster to block Sear so you do not get stunned. Consider taking Barrier so his Ignite and his passive don't kill you, since they burn for a ton of extra damage. Ward your lane and dodge his abilities as much as you can. |
Very Easy Lane.Every time he tosses hid barrel, use Nimbus Strike to him or a minion. He will not be doing anything to you at all and he will lose lane hard. When you jump to him, use [Decoy]] and run behind him. If he tries to use Body Slam then he will just hit you and go nowhere. Have fun killing! |
Medium Lane. This lane is a little weird. Max Nimbus Strike, since if you try and land Crushing Blow then he will just jump away. You can win trades with him before 6, and if he is not fed, after 6 too. If you find him chasing you, use Warrior Trickster when you see him use Chum the Waters. If you did it at the right moment, the Warrior Trickster will take it and you will live. |
Easy Lane. Kassadin is capable of carrying very hard so you need to shut him down, hard. He is the anti mage so you will be good against him. Kill him before level 6, at least try. His silence will be annoying so you should try and max Nimbus Strike against him so you can do damage before he silences you. |
Medium Lane. You HAVE to dodge here spears, or you will lose lane. Hide behind minions. Use Warrior Trickster to block it. After her spear is used, jump on her.If you go in for the kill wait for her heal to bo used before you use your Ignite. |
Very Easy.Extremely easy. He does so little damage early on that you can literally jump right on him. Although, stay by minions or his Lay Waste will do damage. If you sit next to minions, it does 20 damage tops. If he spams it, he goes oom. You counter him in every way. |
Medium LaneThis lane can be really good, or really bad depending on how you do early game. When he uses Malefic Visions on a minion, is when you goin on him, Combo will go E > Q > W > Run behind him or away from his Call of the Void. After 6, use Cyclone and stay ext to him, he will use Nether Grasp but you will keep spinning while suppressed. You will win this fight and walk away laughing. If he is smart, he will Flash out of Cyclone and then use Nether Grasp. That wil make you lose that fight depending on his damage. |
Medium Lane.Vladimir can heal a lot from your harass, so don't bother, just farm up and wait for him to go on you, if he does try and harass you it will be with his heal.Which means he won't have it while you retaliate. Try and force his Sanguine Pool, it deals a lot of damage to himself. After it is used, you can be free to Cyclone and Ignite him. |
Medium LaneThis lane can go either way. Max Crushing Blow and farm up. Dodge his abilities and harass him. When he uses Death Mark use your Warrior Trickster and run behind him. Then when you go visible, use your full combo. Because he could not get his full combo and basic attacks off on his ulti, you will out damage him. Zed can carry a game, but if he is shut down early he falls off HARD. Remember that and do not give him kills. |
Hard Lane. Lee Sin is a very strong mid laner, but it is very rare. He is also Wukong's biggest counter. If you happen to fight him mid. Farm, farm, farm. Call for ganks and try and kill him. He can ulti you away during your Cyclone, and see you during Warrior Trickster. Do not fight him mid. |
Medium Lane.Farm Farm Farm. If you try and harass him he will just heal with Blood Thirst or do tons of damage to you with Blood Price. His passive will save him from death so try and kill that passive early so you can kill him. Masacre increases his attack range and attack speed by a lot. So you want to use Cyclone after he uses this and Dark Flight so he cannot get away. Build an Randuin's Omen later to counter him. |
Hard Lane. The thing about Darius is that he has a very strong harass, has tankiness, and can chase you down easily with Apprehend and Crippling Strike]]. You will beat him pre level 6 but as soon as he gets his ulti you need to play more passively. Try not to get in little skirmishes with him or he will out damage you with Decimate and Hemmorhage. You can time Warrior Trickster just right to try and block his Noxian Guillotine and if it works he will rage and you will get away. |
Easy Lane. You counter Cho'Gath in a few ways, if he tries using Rupture then you use Nimbus Strike to him and he will not do his full damage. Your Warrior Trickster can block his Feast so time it perfectly. Your Cyclone will just destroy him. |
Medium Lane. This is an ok lane to go against. He most likely is going to build critical Strike so you need to build armor and you need to shut him down. Do not let him farm too much. Freeze lane and if tries getting farm then punish him.Make him only able to farm with Parrrley. When he uses Cannon Barrage get out if it as fast as you can. It will do a lot of damage over the duration. |
Medium Lane. You need to get in and get out against Garen. When you Nimbus Strike and Crushing Blow against him he will just silence you and spin. So you need to dodge his spin. So, you need to run an opposite direction of him while he is spinning and you are invisible. His ultimate will kill you while you fight him so call in for a gank and be wary of his ability to dive you. |
Hard Lane. Lee Sin counters you in every way. He can see you in Warrior Trickster, he can knock you away during Cyclone e just counters you. Do not fight him.If you are fighting a Lee Sin top, you need to call for ganks. Try and farm but do not die trying. |
Hard Lane. Jax counters every one. He is a ridiculous OP champion and will kill you if you make 1 small mistake. Do not let him farm too much but since you cannot stop him you just need to keep up with him in farm. When he jumps on you run with Nimbus Strike and Warrior Trickster. Once he gets is ulti do not fight him alone. |
Medium Lane. You need to dodge his Shock Blast as much as you can. Warrior Trickster blocks it so you are ok in this case. It sorta makes you counter him. Since he can knock you away, do not use Cyclone until he does. |
Hard Lane.As one of the hardest enemis to fight, Nasus is tanky as hell, and does alot of damage. If he farms the he will cause your team hell. Do not bother harassing him he will heal off minions, and he can slow you forever and just Q you and heal off your harass. Call for a gank and try freezing lane so you can farm more than he can. Since he is Nasus he will try and freeze the lane to his advantage. Do not allow it to push his way or you have messed up big time. His ultimate move makes him even more tanky and will cause Cyclone to do almost nothing. If you see Nasus then you should not be playing Wukong. |
Medium Lane.Max Nimbus Strike here. You need to be able to break his block. So your combo goes, E > Basic Attack > Q W > run behind him to dodge Heartseeker Strike > R > Ignite. Try and sit in the brush to dodge hos Spear Shot. This should be a lane you can win. |
Hard Lane. Renekton can out damage you easily. When you go in on him and Warrior Trickster out he can use Cull the Meek to hurt you. If he gets Ruthless Predator on you, then he does even more damage and it will not be a fair trade. Farm up and call for a gank. Be wary of his ability to dive, and if he does use Warrior Trickster > Ignite > Cyclone to kill him, of course that is if you have enough hp. |
Medium Lane.Riven is a pretty op champion all around but luckly her damage comes from sticking to her enemies with dashes and killing them with an execute. But who hears of actually sticking to a Wukong? No one. So her Q is a series of dashes that are stopped by enemies and end with a knock back. She has a dash/shield and a stun. Because of this, she can get away from almost any gank. You need to be really precise of the ganks you do get or the kill gets away. Try and out farm her. When she jumps you use Warrior Trickster and run a separate direction then towards the tower. She will waste her stuff on your clone and you can go back in to fight her. |
Medium Lane.Farm Farm Farm. Do not get caught in Flame Spitter and use Warrior Trickster to black Electro-Harpoon. When he uses his ultimate, get otu of it and fight him. Use your abilities smartly and dodge his Electro-Harpoon. He should be a lane you can win. |
Medium Lane. You need to out farm him. KIll him before level 6, when you can at least. His ultimate, Undying Rage is pretty anoying and is the longest 5 seconds EVER. Before level 6 you can kill him pretty easily. He does not get too strong before then. |
Farming as Wukong is fast and you will need to do it a lot to get items and maintain being a threat to the enemy team. Nimbus Strike is great for farming, and harassing all the same. So if you are focused more on killing your enemy rather than farming, than focus Crushing Blow. If you focus on farming, and harassing max Nimbus Strike.
Many people make a few mistakes when farming. During laning you want to freeze the lane as much as you can. Do this by waiting until the enemy minion is extremely low, then last hitting. I know some of you do not need to be told how to last hit, but you would be surprised.
Never compare your farm to the enemies. Just try and stay with them in cs. If you find yourself behind, do not pressure yourself. Just farm. You do not need to add pressure to yourself over minions. Do not set a goal for a certain time. In a few champion spotlights, Phreak gives a goal of, for example, 120 cs by 12 minutes. This is far unrealistic on one case, and the other is you will start panicking and be sloppy about your last hits if you are setting goals like this.

During teamfights, Wukong excels at his finest. Wait for your tank ( if it is not you ) to initiate, then go in and ulti as many as possible. You now have 2 options, stay on the enemy that is killing your carry, or go to their carry.
Champions that Wukong does very well with in teamfights.
Jarvan IV : Along with Cataclysm, he can trap enemies in and Cyclone just messes people up!
Hecarim: His ulti can fear everyone if used correctly. They cannot stop you from jumping the carry while feared.
Nami: One of the best supports, her ulti can knock everyone up. Then you knock everyone up. Awesome combo.
Malphite His ulti along with Cyclone can knock everyone up... TWICE! Along with that he is tanky for days!
Zac: Has an awesome ulti that knocks everyone back, he is awesome for ganks and can chase anyone down. Never go wrong with that.
Leona: 3 stuns, one of them being AoE. Her and Wukong are a scary teamfight combo.
Orianna: Her damage is ridiculous and her ulti synergises with yours better than ANYONE elses does. She bring all the enemies in the area into a small group, and your ulti will hit them all, guaranteed. If you have the chance at getting her on your team do it.
