Introduction

So....Why listen to me?

To be honest I don't really have a good answer to that question other than he is my highest mastery champion with 70,000 points. I stop playing ranked after my placements because it is a great way to make you and your friends all hate each other, but I guess if you are looking for an in depth guide to thresh aimed at beginners this would be a place to start.

(If you are confused about how thresh's abilities work then skip down to the abilities section before reading about runes, masteries, and summoners.

Summoners

Exhaust is undeniably the most reliable support option there is. If the enemy is running the spell and you are not it can turn the tide in their favor greatly, however if you have more experience with ignite or some other spell then go for it.

Flash is the go to for any champion in league of legends. you can take 50 different sized wrenches to work or you can take an adjustable one. The only time you should not be taking flash on a champion is if there is a NEED to have a different spell.

Masteries

Thunderlord's Decree VS. Courage of the Colossus

If you're not familiar with thunderlords the basic jist is that you gain additional damage on your burst if you hit three autos or abilities. Even thought it might seem like a tank with thunderlords doesn't make sense, when Thresh hits one ability chances are he is going to hit at least one other and an auto attack. thunderlords can be a very reliable since it is practically guaranteed to proc every time.

Courage of the Colossus gives a shield when you hit hard cc which thresh has a lot of. unless you are running ad runes like me there is no real downside to this mastery over others.

Items

Face of the Mountain VS. Anything Else

Face of the Mountain Gives Thresh the much needed early CDR to throw out more hooks when maxing flay. It is also in the current meta and all around great support item. The health, shield, and slow synergize well with any tanky support.

Ruby Sightstone

Sightstone is a very preferential item. Some people build a support/sightstone item to take up less space but still have the active, some people will take sightstone only of things are going well and they don't need to build Iceborn Gauntlet to counter a fed adc. Personally I will take sightstone if they have a balanced damage team and I don't need more CDR right away. If you take Iceborn second then build Crucible rather than Athenes.

Athene's Unholy Grail

There is not much to be said about Grail other than it gives the CDR that Thresh loves and the Magic Resist if he is lacking.

Mobility Boots

This one is pretty optional, it all depends on what your CDR is.(you might need Lucidity) If you don't need the CDR with where your build is going then mobies take the cake by evolving your map presence to new heights.

Skill Sequence/Abilities

Thresh's passive is basically that he starts with less armor and it doesn't scale with level. Instead he gathers souls from nearby enemy units that die. These soulds give armor and AP giving his spells some more punch (and thunderlords) while making him get mroe armor late game.

Thresh's Q is his most recognizable ability thanks to the antics of Madlife. Thresh throws out a line skillshot that stops when it hits an enemy. It stuns and damages whatever it hits and thresh slowly and slightly drags the unit towards him. For a short period after the ability hits, thresh can reactivate it to bring himself to the enemy. (this skillshot does collide with minions and monsters)The skill can only be stopped by units and thresh is cannot move while it is traveling.

This is Thresh's Lantern. Thresh can cast the ability to throw it out and leave a shielding area where it lands. In addition an ally can click on the lantern if not immobilized by cc and it will quickly take that ally to thresh's current position. This ability is great for saving allies from danger as it can be cast over walls.

Flay is in my opinion thresh's best spell but also the hardest to explain with words. Basically thresh can forced someone away or towards him by casting a directional rectangle that can be cast on a rotation around him. Flay also has a passive where thresh's auto attacks do additional magic damage scaling with ad, level, and souls collected. the longer the time since your last auto attack the more additional damage you do up to a max. You max this ability first because of the additional auto attack damage and the lower cooldown bonus for leveing it.

The Box is thresh's ultimate. When cast, Thresh spawns a pentagon of prison walls. Enemies can walk or dash through these walls but will take damage and be significantly slowed. This is a follow up ability to your Q and E and you can also flay enemies into it to force their hand. Keep in mind the wall that a target goes through will break.

Putting It all Together

In lane you will want to constantly look for opportunities to auto attack poke with your flay passive.

Unless the enemy's support is soraka then your priority target for Death Sentence should be the ADC.

If you hit a Q follow up by using flay to keep them close. If the enemy has a dash then delay using flay until they are likely to dash, this way you can cancel the distance they would cover using that dash. otherwise use your flay right away to prevent them from flashing out of yourflay range.

Use your ultimate after you hook. This will force the enemy to either run into the wall willingly, flash out of it, or stay inside the box until the walls fall down or their support breaks one of them. In any of these situations you can flay your target into the walls to force their hand.

Use your lantern before you throw your hook or while you are pulling an enemy if your ally is not close enough to help.

In teamfights either be the engage or the peel for your team depending on the situation. If an assassin jumps on your adc you can flay them away and then hit an easy hook in tandem with The Box. You can also use your hook to CC a priority target and then use your other abilities to CC anyone around them and let your allies focus the priority target down.

Keep in mind that sometimes it is easier to walk up to an enemy, flay them, and then hook as flay gives a small slow after flaying making the hook land easier.
