Introduction
Through trial and error (playing the game), I have found that the typical "BUILD A TRINITY FORCE AND LIFESTEAL" approach to playing Trundle is less than effective in Dominion.
Trundle isn't an AD carry in my opinion, he just doesn't do enough damage. But Trundle is excellent at ganking and defending a tower. He is also very good at disabling other AD melee heroes. Which is what I generally see most summoners using.
So my answer to the Trinity Force + Lifesteal fail is to build Trundle defensively. His attack damage scales very well as he progresses through the game, so you are able to focus more on Defense and HP rather than DPS.
This makes Trundle an excellent initiator especially against AD melee, and great for defending capture points.
I will not be going into great detail, but I will do my best to outline the important parts of the build.
The main thing anyone should pay attention to is what type of champions you are facing, or to put it simply, what type of damage you are taking. (Physical vs Magic Damage)
If they are largely AP champions you might want to consider getting the Force of Nature first. Conversely, if you are facing mostly AD heroes I suggest you get the Frozen Heart first.
Generally, I suggest you take the Mercury Treads; but like I said before, it largely depends on the champions you're facing, if they are all AD you may want to consider taking Ninja Tabi for the extra armor and dodge.
You can exchange the Frozen Heart with Thornmail, if you are facing all AD. But I favor the Frozen Heart on a mixed team.
The other important feature to note of this build is that I usually build the Force of Nature (magic defense) while I'm also building the Frozen Heart (armor), so that I'm not lacking magic defense, while I'm building my armor. But once again, it largely depends on what champions are on the field.
Once you get your boots, armor, magic resistance:
BOOTS
Ninja Tabi (Mostly AD Enemy Team)
Mercury Treads (Mostly AP or Mixed Enemy Team)
Armor
Frozen Heart (Mostly AP or Mixed Enemy Team)
Thornmail (Mostly AD Enemy Team)
Magic Resist
Force of Nature (ALWAYS) Note: If you're facing an all AD team and aren't taking any
magic damage you may want to skip this and get either
Thornmail or Frozen Heart. (Whatever you didn't build)
The next items are kind of up to you, and the items you should take largely depends on what enemy champions you face.
MIXED ENEMY TEAM - COMMON
Three core items: Merc Treads, Frozen Heart, and FoN, followed by Warmog's, Sanguine
Blade, and Atma's.
MOSTLY AD ENEMY TEAM - COMMON
You will want to pick up as much armor as you can (consider dropping FoN). So after I
pick up my core 3 items (Boots and 2 pieces of armor), I typically get more HP through
with Warmog's. Followed by Sanguine Blade (for lifesteal) and Atma's for more defense.
MOSTLY AP ENEMY TEAM - RARE
You will want to pick up as much magic resist as you can. So you will want to build
Mercury Treads, FoN, Spirits Visage, Wit's End, Warmog's, and a Sanguine Blade.

It was immensely useful when I was learning to play Trundle.

In summary, these 3 different Trundle builds allow for:
-Flexibility based on your opponent
-Survivability early --> late game
-Late game life steal
-Excellent defensive capability
-Excellent initiation
-High HP
-High armor and magic resistance
-GREAT MOBILITY
-GREAT CC AND MAP CONTROL
I would have liked to include item links and skill links and a more in depth look at why and when I buy certain items. I will try to update in the future to make this guide a little more user friendly.
