Swain is a great heavy CC champion and should be played to take advantage of this. This guide will mainly allow you to constantly cripple your opponents and you will really shine in team fights. However you won't be as great early game at soloing opponents and wrecking face, but this is a team game so I think your victory is a tad more important than you getting an amazing K/D ratio.
Abilities and skill ordering
(Innate): Swain's base mana regeneration is increased by 250% for 5 seconds after killing an enemy unit.
This is a great passive and it allows him to stay in his lane for a very long time along with his ultimate. So as long as your good at last hitting staying in your lane shouldn't be a problem.
(Active): Swain sets his raven to cripple an enemy. Over the next 3 seconds, the target takes damage over time and is slowed.
This will be your main ability and key to harassing. It is important to max it first to get the best possible slow you can early on and it will help out with getting first bloods and killing runners.
(Active): Swain marks a target area. After a short delay, mighty talons grab hold of enemy units dealing damage and rooting them for 2 seconds.
This ability can be devastate runners and mean the difference between an Ace or not. However in the hands of a noob its just a big mess of wasted mana. Learning how to aim this ability is key. You can also use it to lure your enemies into a flurry of abilities. It's important to practice using this ability so you can assure kills of those who flee. I max this second because the it's important to have your second CC ready more with the improved cool down and damage
(Active): Swain afflicts his target, dealing damage to them over time and causing them to take increased damage from Swain's attacks for 4 seconds.
This ability is pretty good and it greatly improves your DPS. However its not as important to get ranks in early as it would take away from our CC opportunities.
(Toggle): Swain transforms into the form of a raven, during this time up to 3 lesser ravens strike out at nearby enemies each second. Swain is healed for half the damage dealt by the Ravens.
This ult is pure amazing and it can keep you in your lane for endless amounts of time with your passive and deal out great amounts of damage in team fights. But don't think just because you have life steal and look like a bad *** huge bird monster doesn't mean you can lolomgwtfbbqhax a 1v5 fight and tank like a pro. Also don't get carried away with this ability on because you can lose track of your mana and the next thing you know your getting ganked and you have no mana to CC and GTFO.
For summoner spells I take ignite and flash, however teleport or exhaust are two other options.
I take ignite because an additional DoT is nice and it can mean the difference between first blood.
Flash is just an overall amazing spell and it can get you out of almost any situation if you know how to use it.
Masteries I do a standard caster build going 9-0-21, making sure to take the improved flash, magic penetration and various mana and mana regen.
Doran's ring is just a great starter item for casters and gives you a good AP boost and mana regen to improve your lane survivability.
Sorcerers Shoes are the standard boots you should take for any caster, however mercury treads are suitable against a heavy CC team. Especially if they have Galio.
This is an overall great item that will greatly improve your damage output. Plus the additional cool down reduction will allow you to constantly be throwing CCs at your opponents. While you are building this item take kage's lucky pick because it will help you get the gold faster to finish up your Deathfire's
I get Rod of Ages because it can make up for your poor scaling late game and is devastating in long lasting games. In addition the health can help out with how squishy you are.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter is always great because its addtional CC, and this plus your Q will have insane slow. Allowing your team mates to pick off the helpless runners with no problem.
This item gives you good AP, helps out your squish and reduces all nearby magic resist? Don't mind if I do :).
This is easily the best caster item available, it offers an amazing amount of AP and can save your life in team fights.
For glyphs I get improved CDs so you can harass more often and get off more CCs in teamfights.
For marks I get magic penetration to go along with your abyssal scepter.
For seals I get mana regen to help with your laning phase.
And for quints I get AP per lvl to improve your dps late game.
