Varus Build Guide by Astoru

Hey all, Astoru here, this is my first guide and I decided to write it because I've encountered nothing but bad cookie-cutter Varus in-game and I would like to help people play him to his full potential. Before people jump on me for dissing the pure AD build I'm not saying it's a bad build I'm just saying that I feel there is better for Varus. I am by no means an expert considering he has only been out for a day or so but below are some of the things I have found to work the best. A lot of this build is situational but I'm going to center Varus around the core items of Trinity Force and Boots of Swiftness, but more into that in the item section.
Pros / Cons
First off, why play Varus anyway?
Huge range (with Q full charged)
Awesome farming (With Q full charged can take out entire waves)
Great long range harass
Mows down tanks like a flamethrower to hay
Very fast (when using this build)
Can CC entire teams with Ulti
Can solo very well
AoE Slow/Heal Debuff
Very fragile in early game
Needs a duo that synergizes well with him when going bot
Very slow movement early game
No escapes (sans flash)
Greater Mark of Strength: Pretty standard considering his main skill is attack damage and scales like a boss. These will boost your Q and E early game to do some serious damage with minimal items.
Greater Seal of Resilience: To try to make up for his squishiness.
Greater Glyph of Shielding: More defensive runes to make him more beefy early game.
Greater Quintessence of Strength: Even more attack damage for more early game Q and W damage.
I know there are people that refuse to use flat AD runes and swear by armor pen however I personally feel that these provide a greater boost in early game laning and choose them over ARP. Even with people building armor I have yet to experience any problems doing damage considering even though Varus is physical we cannot forget the W proc of % health damage so even with lots of armor tanks go down easy.
Masteries are 21/1/8, taking everything that boosts damage in the damage tree, taking three points into havoc and skipping vampirism. One point in defense for better heal. Eight points into utility for mana regen and a little boost in speed. I choose these masteries because they're what work the best for me, of course you can choose whatever you want but I find that these capitalize on Varus' skill damage and give you the mana for more lane sustainability. Of course if you're taking different summoner spells you will be moving a few points around.
Pretty standard due to your lack of escapes
Helps because you're focused and can get you out of a pinch. Also nice when bot duo.
Maybe? You're usually not close enough to other champions to apply it but if you're facing lots of melee it could save you.
If this is your skill go for it, I personally don't see it useful on Varus.
Extra escapes to add to your already fast movement
My core items I find are quite different from the standard because I have personally found Varus to be FAR too squishy and focused to only itemize for pure damage so I have customized this build to be more focused on maximizing your W and hitting HARD with Q.
I start with some like to start with and 3 red sodas, I prefer the extra attack damage and health for more beef.
First trip back I typically have enough to buy and .
At this point you should be fairly tanky and if you play smart you should be able to snag some easy kills.
I typically pick up 2 before I make my trinity force just for the extra movement speed to add to my and to increase my W application speed.
After I find most items to be situational from there.
For tanky teams
If you're doing well and want a big AD boost + life steal
For even more movement speed and W application
If you're getting focused and you've got those nasty casters almost beat this can be your life saver
I know this seems strange in an AD carry build but it is actually quite awesome, if you find capable of AoEing the whole team constantly, the spell vamp works on all your skills and your ulti gets 1:1 AP ratio, also for every 100 AP you get 1% extra damage per stack to your W proc. The active is also a nice bonus.
If you're just really facestomping and have tons of cash just buy yourself one of these, doesn't hurt.
Use of your skills is fairly simple but harder to master. You want to poke with auto attacks when you have your W and when you have three stacks or when it's about to drop and you're not in range to auto attack you want to pop off a Q blow it up for sweet sweet damage. E whenever you can, especially in teamfights. The slow and heal debuff are HUGE. I use my ulti as an engage when enemies overextend, when one person gets caught the team either runs and you get a free kill or they run back in and get trapped giving you the opportunity to pick them off one at a time. You want to focus on blight stacks more than auto attacking. In team fights where the enemy is close together I try to apply three stacks to as many people as I can before triggering blight stacks with and quick Q shot or E. Varus is primarily a skill spammer not an autoattacker like he's made out to be.
That's pretty much my guide for now, I'll try to keep this updated with more detailed info as I continue to master Varus. Remember, those 2 PD 2 BT 1 IE boots builds aren't always the best! Give it a shot, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
