Introduction

This guide will be updated from time to time


Hello everyone,
I hope you'll enjoy my first guide here.
I've decided to make my first guide about Varus, one of my main champion.
Note that the AD Build can be used on every maps, but be cautious with AP Build because I use it mostly for ARAM games when we don't have much AP.

Like every human, I'm not perfect and can make some mistakes, so don't hesitate to comments if you have some advices.

Masteries

AD Build:

For the masteries, I go 21/9/0. I like to play adc with a very offensive tree. After all it's your job to do damages.

With those masteries you should have a good harass and a good farm with a bit of defense.


AP Build:

Still 21/9/0 but on the AP side of the tree. Note that Blade Weaving is useful only if you take Nashor's Tooth. You can take Arcane Mastery instead for more AP.

Summoner Spells


My recommandation



Flash: Simply a must have. You can use it as an escape or chase move, it can help finish an ennemy or avoid some skills.


Ignite: A good choice if your are agressive like me. It can help finish a champ who gets away or counter the healing champs like Dr. Mundo or Soraka. Sometimes it also helps when you duel with an ennemy ADC whose life steal is very high.




Other spells

Ghost: The best spell to chase or flee, I don't particularly like it but some people find it useful.


Teleport: This spell is useful to backdoor, to instantly come back on your lane or even gank if you have a minion/ward nearby. I don't take it because I prefer the potential security provided by Flash.


Barrier: That's my second choice if I don't pick Ignite.That shield can litteraly save your life! It can provide you with a great advantage in teamfights, save you from a skillshot or an ennemy's Ignite.


Heal: Your last resort in fights. I don't use it except for some ARAMs.


Exhaust: A good skill that will allow you to comfortably chase your opponent or win a duel by weakening him.
Cleanse: The CC remover that will counter those Sona and other Taric like.

Skills

Living Vengeance (Passive):
"On champion kill or assist, Varus gains 40% attack speed for 6 seconds.
On minion kill, Varus gains 20% attack speed for 3 seconds."


This passive is really good for farming, destroying towers and, of course, teamfights !


Piercing Arrow (Q):
"Varus starts drawing back his next shot, gradually increasing its range and damage, then he fires it, dealing minimum 10 / 43 / 77 / 110 / 143 (+1.0 per attack damage) to maximum 15 / 65 / 115 / 165 / 215 (+1.6 per attack damage) physical damage, reduced by 15% per enemy hit (minimum 33%).

While preparing to shoot, Varus cannot autoattack or use abilities, and his movement speed is slowed by 20%. After 4 seconds, Piercing Arrow fails but refunds half its mana cost. "


This skill is your harass. It has a decent power and a great range at full charge.


Blighted Quiver (W):
"Varus' basic attacks deal bonus 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26 (+0.25 per ability power) magic damage and apply Blight for 6 seconds (stacks 3 times).
Varus' other abilities detonate Blight, dealing magic damage equal to 2 / 2.75 / 3.5 / 4.25 / 5% (+0.01% per ability power) of the target's maximum health per stack.

This damage is capped against monsters."


Particularly useful against life-stacking opponents ( Dr. Mundo). Stacks 3 blights on them and launch a skill to make it explode.


Hail of arrows (E):
"Varus fires a hail of arrows that deal 65 / 105 / 145 / 185 / 225 (+0.6 per bonus attack damage) physical damage and desecrate the ground. Desecrated ground slows enemies' Movement Speed by 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45% and reduces their healing and regeneration by 50%."

An AoE attack with a slow. Can help chase or flee from opponents.


Chain of corruption (R):
"Varus flings out a tendril of corruption that deals 150 / 250 / 350 (+1.0 per ability power) magic damage and immobilizes the first enemy champion hit for 2 seconds.
The corruption then spreads towards nearby uninfected enemy champions, applying the same damage and immobilize if it reaches them. The corruption will continue to spread until there are no further unaffected targets in range."


Your ult can be used in many ways like paralyse a pursuer, prevent a melee champion from approching or simply flee. It can also reverse the result of a teamfight by paralysing ennemies one by one and dealing damages.

I tend to max Piercing Arrow(Q) for a better harass because it takes time for Blighted Quiver to be really effective and Hail of Arrows as a lower range.

Now you can max Blighted Quiver !!With the AP ratio, it's just awfully good !

Items

Core Items


AD Build:
In my opinion the best boots for Varus and ADCs in general.
Your main damage item. Lots of damage and tons of Critical Hits !
It will give you a decent Attaque Speed and will add chances of Critical Hits for your Infinity Edge.
Your surviving item, giving you the life steal you need to survive on the map.
Not a must have but I find it very useful, in particular when the ennemy team is tanky.

AP Build:
The logical choice for AP Carry.
A must have item. Most of your AP will be given by Rabadon.
A decent boost of ASPD with a useful passive that will strenghten your auto-attacks.
A boost of AP with a bit of CR. Plus the passive for those tanky opponents.
You'll be useless if the ennemy team build a lot of MR so the passive will be life-saving.

Situational Items

(AD/AP) This item is a double-edged sword. First edge, your team fights well: you get killed, your teammates resists and you get back in fight after reviving. Second edge: your team has difficulties in teamfights and they'll abandon you as soon as you die... Happy 2nd death !
(AD/AP) It's shield is life-saving if ennemy AP Carry is fed or if you're against a burst champion ( LeBlanc). (Can also protect from Malzahar or Karthus's ulti.)
(AD) Provide a boost of health and allow you to slow your opponents with each attack, useful when chasing ennemies.
(AD) Damages, ATK SPD, life steal and an anti life stacking passive, what else ? Good alternative to Bloodthirster.
(AD) A good alternative to Last Whisper!! Gives less armor penetration but has Cooldown Reduction and life instead.
(AD/AP) Funny item. Gives an enormous amount of ATK SPD and your additionals attacks keeps your on-hit effects !! With this you can apply your passive on three targets with each attack.
(AD) For me, the only alternative to Phantom Dancer. Personally I prefer the PD for it's passive, allowing you to ignore units collisions.
(AP) You can take it if you don't like Nashor's Tooth. It has AP, MR, MvtSPD and the passive can help you detect & slow the two nearest opponents.
(AP) Usefull against a full AD team. Moreover, it can protect you against annoying things like Karthus's ulti.
(AP) If you are outfarmed and need gold, I think it's a good choice. It also provides some AP and Mana regen. You can sell it in late game for a better item.
(AD/AP) Good against AP team with annoying CC.

General Behavior

As the ADC your primary objective is... TO FARM ! But do it gently, just aim for last hits, don't push to avoid easy ganks from ennemy jungler. Also don't use your skills to farm because in early game your skills consume too much mana. It's best to keep it for harass.
When the lane is clear of opponents and you're able to destroy the tower, don't forget your passive ! try to last hit every two or three arrows to keep your passive activated.


During teamfights you'll be the target #1 so don't stick too close to the ennemies and use your ulti, not too soon so you can see who is rushing you, and not too late so your ulti can navigate through ennemy team (and don't forget that it's a cage, not a stun, ennemies can still attack). Your goal is to kill the ennemy AD Carry or AP Carry, focus the squishy ones.
Use your skills wisely.


Combo: 3x >>> >>> 3x >>> >>> 3x >>>


It's not an easy combo because you need to perfectly aim at your ennemies. In fact, if you miss one skill, the entire combo will be weakened. Moreover, some times you'll not have the necessary time to correctly apply 3 Blighted Quiver.


Note for AP Build: DO NOT MISS YOUR ULTI !!! It's your mass murdering weapon !! And try to stack some Blighted Quiver on the ennemies targeted by your ulti for maximum effect !

Team Work

Favorite Supports
    I love Sona !In my opinion it's an all-rounder support:
+She can help you harass the ennemy with her Hymn of Valor coupled with the "Straccato" provided by Power Chord.
+She can heal you with Aria of Perseverance and weaken an ennemy with "Diminuendo" (Power Chord).
+She can give you a boost of MVT SPD with Song of Celerity and slow a chasing/fleeing target with her "Tempo" (Power Chord).
+And at last, she has a AoE Stun ! Crescendo can easily turn a fight in your favor.


Leona may be a good choice because she's very tanky and has no less than 3 stuns. Just wait for her to grab & stun an ennemy and kill the poor dude.


Taric is very similar to Leona. You just trade some CCs for a very useful heal. In most cases, just one stun is all it cost to get a kill or at least do a good amount of damages. Plus, you can keep farming for a long time thanks to the heal.


    I like Janna, not as much as Sona but she is good.
+Her passive give you some MVT SPD as long as you are near her.
+She can harass with her Howling Gale which bumps the targets, giving you some time to attack or flee.
+She can Slow an ennemy with Zephyr (and also deal some damages).
+ Eye of the Storm, a very useful skill. It's not just a shield -which is already a good thing-, it also gives you a boost of AD ! And she can also summon it on turrels to protect the lane.
+Her ulti, combining a bump and an AoE heal is a good thing but while doing it, Janna is quite vulnerable, don't forget to protect her.



Supports I don't dislike

With his passive Thresh can become quite tanky in mid/late game (but he must collects souls of course). He can shield you with his lantern and you can grab it to jump next to him, useful to flee when you are ganked. He can grab ennemies with his hook and bump them forward/backward.


In my opinion she is good at harassing thanks to her Inner Flame combined with Gathering Fire and Mantra. Also, her shield gives you a little MVT SPD boost and she can stun an ennemy but it's not easy because of the time it needs.


First good point: she's a Yordle... I love Yordles. More seriously, like a lot of supports, she has a shield. She can transform an ennemy in a little pet (so cu~te!) so he can do nothing but flee. She has a little harass (+slow) and her ulti is usefull to help you survive teamfights even if I prefer when she uses it on the melee champs because of the AoE bump provided.



Other supports I don't recommend

I don't particularly hate her, it's just that most people using her can't correctly throw their damn Aqua Prison !!!


Some people keep using her as a support... And most of them don't do it properly. Yes you can harass but you must shoot behind the minions, which is pretty obvious for ennemies. You can put traps in the bushes but THEY ARE NOT WARDS! If the opponents don't walk on them, you can be ganked without noticing it. And use your heal on the ADC dammit !


A good AP Carry but not a support. Yes, she does have a shield but most of the time, people use their Lucent Singularity to harass AND push. Plus, same thing as nidalee, her Light Binding can't pass through minions. Finally, she's like "IMMA FIRIN' A LASER !!", gets kills and become more of an AP Carry than a support.


May be a good support if your partner really understand what a support is and if he uses what we call "communication". Indeed, she can heal, gives mana and even silence an ennemy, but don't try to harass ennemies as your Starcall will also strike nearby minions, making you push.


I don't really like his harass as it usually results in you pushing your lane. His ulti works as a Guardian Angel but as such, it has the same drawback (see "Items" chapter). At least, he can slow an ennemy or boost your MVT SPD.

Lane opponents

I'll use this chapter to give advices against other ADCs. If you have your own advices, please leave a comment.

Annoying ADC because she can check bushes with Hawkshot, decreasing your chances of ganking her. Make sure you have an escape route, Ashe can slow you with every auto-atk so she can easily chase after you. If you want to duel her, do it when she has already wasted her ulti, a stun isn't good for you. You can avoid her harass with Volley by staying behind minions.


A very good ADC. Beware of her harass, Piltover Peacemaker & Headshot, and don't get caught in her Yordle Snap Trap (Noooo, my yordles !!) when she's nearby. She can easily flee thanks to her 90 Caliber Net, the best thing is to do is to silence/stun her. If she uses Ace in the Hole, your friends (not the minions) can intercept the shot to save your life.


Don't really know what to say as I don't play very often against him. He can check the bush and will harass with his ulti most of the time. don't hesitate to comment if you know more things about Corki than me.


Don't feed him, he can earn a good amount of gold if he stacks his passive correctly and beware of his ulti. Also, be cautious as he can chase you thanks to Blood Rush.


An ADC with a strong harass. He'll try to hit you with [Mystic Shot whenever he can in order to reduce the cooldown of Trueshot Barrage. Moreover, Arcane Shift is a good escape/evade move that also launch an attack on the nearest ennemy.


In my opinion, the real danger against Graves is to duel with him: by stacking his passive, True Grit, he'll gain some armor (and MR) and he can use Quickdraw to increase his ASPD. Also, he may try to blind you (with Smoke Screen) when the ennemy's jungler is waiting to gank.


A real warmachine. Fisrt, her harass: Zap!, it hurts, slow you, and reveal you on the map. She can also harass you when in bazzoka mode as it increase her range. Then, don't get caught by her Flame Chompers!. Be careful when your health is low, Super Mega Death Rocket! is an Ashe-like ulti. Last advice, don't duel her. If the opponent is smart enough, he'll uses his minigun-mode, giving him a very good boost of ASPD.


Has a good ASPD. He can increase his range and have on on-hit effect based on your health. The most annoying thing is his ulti which provides him with a good harass that can also reveal ennemies in bushes so keep on moving.


Hmmm what to say ? He has a little harass. When he launch his ulti, go take shelter behind minions. I don't know him very well, I'll complete this part if people comments on that.


Like Varus, she has an AoE slow. Also, don't hide directly behind a minion has she can use Double Up on it to touch you. Beware of her ulti: don't escape backward but laterally. In fact, Bullet Time affect a large cone shaped area in front of MS.


Like Ashe, she can reveal an area. Be cautious when she put a target on you as her next attack will deal more damages. Her ulti is very special, she becomes a very fast melee champion and she can turn back to normal by unleashing a volley of arrows on her surroundings. My best advice would be to cage her with your ulti when she runs towards you.


Look out for her boomerang, she can easily harass you and push/last hit at the same time. You may have some difficulties to harass her because of her shield but the cooldown on it is long enough for you to shoot some arrows. Also, it's rare for her to launch her ulti when she's alone, be careful of buches...


She'll harass you with her DoT, will escape with her jump and will ruin your ganks with her ulti. Also she can boost her ASPD for some seconds. I'm not sure but maybe your ulti can intercept her in mid-air when she jumps.


One sneaky bastard. Make sure to have as much vision on him a possible because when you'll think you are safe, he'll be just behind you and you'll be dead before you know it.


A dangrous ADC, don't let her stack Silver Bolts on you, especially in late game, the damages will be awful. Most of the time, after the second attack she'll try to use Tumble to maximise the effect so put a good distance between you and her. Be careful of her ulti, it makes her invisible like Twitch.



I didn't put Teemo in this chapter because I don't consider him as a proper ADC but it's just my opinion, I'll write some lines on him if people wants me to.
