Greetings Summoners, and welcome to my guide. I've been playing quite a bit of Vel'Koz since his release and I'll tell you this, he is slower than a high snail. Which is incredibly irritating since champions like Yasuo, LeBlanc, Lulu, Fizz and, the devil himself, Kassadin are all so strong right now. However, I guess he has to have at least one weak point or he'd just be so OP (definitely not biased whatsoever).

Pros / Cons

So, how about we take a look at the good and bad aspects of our good new friend?

  • Slow base movement speed
  • No dashes or movement speed buffs
  • Plasma Fission may be difficult to land
  • Void Rift is somewhat unreliable, as the second damaging effect is easily avoided.

When it comes to runes, Mr Disintegration here is not all that picky. His mana regeneration is pretty good already, so mana regen runes aren't necessary. Like with most midlaners, I prefer a safe approach; taking 9 Greater Seal of Armor, Greater Mark of Magic Penetration and Greater Glyph of Magic Resist along with 3 Greater Quintessence of Ability Power.

(Passive) Organic Deconstruction:

Vel'Koz's damaging abilities apply stacks of Deconstruction for 7 seconds, stacking up to 3 times. Upon reaching 3 stacks, the stacks detonate and the target suffers 25 + (10 × level) true damage. Basic attacks will refresh the duration, but will not add additional stacks.

(Q) Plasma Fission:

Active: Vel'Koz fires a bolt of energy that deals magic damage and slows the first enemy hit by 70% for a few seconds. The slow decays over the duration.
Upon hitting an enemy, reaching maximum range or being reactivated, the bolt splits in two: each travelling in opposite directions perpendicular to the direction of cast. Each of the secondary bolts deal magic damage and slow the first enemies they hit, respectively.

(W) Void Rift:

Vel'Koz stores a charge of Void Rift every few seconds and can store up to 2 charges. The recharge time is affected by cooldown reduction.
Active: Vel'Koz opens a rift to the void that cuts through the ground in a line, dealing magic damage and leaving behind a trail. After a 0.25 second delay, the entire trail detonates, dealing magic damage to enemies standing upon it.

(E) Tectonic Disruption:

Active: Vel'Koz hurls an anomaly at the target location. When it lands, it collapses, dealing magic damage and suspending enemies hit for 0.75 seconds. Enemies close to Vel'Koz at the time of impact are also slightly knocked back.

(R) Life Form Disintegration Ray:

Active: Vel'Koz roots himself in place and unleashes a laser forward in a line, damaging all enemies caught in its wake at 0.25 second intervals and slowing them by 20% for 1 second. The ray's trajectory will update over the duration to face the cursor and will end after either 2.5 seconds have elapsed or Vel'Koz recasts the ability.
Organic Deconstruction can not be applied more frequently than once every 0.5 seconds.

Skill Sequence

It's much more ideal to max Void Rift due to the fact it deals total damage than other spells and applies 2 stacks of Organic Deconstruction. Since you can also hold 2 charges, despite having the longest cooldown, you are able to use it more often than the other abilities. It's ideal to use this ability to farm as Tectonic Disruption is your engage / disengage along with Plasma Fission (which will, only hit the first target in it's path (and 2 other targets if aimed correclty).

Starting Items

This is a pretty common start this season; Health, AP and Mana Regen. Typical starter for playing mid lane.

When going against an AD Mid laner which you think will give you trouble, there's no better start than armour and a combination of health potions and mana potions.
Crystaline Flask
Super-sustain starting items. If you want do just farm... and farm... and not die, grab these. but you'll have less killing potential (but you'll outlast them).
