Introduction



Hi and welcome to my Volibear guide.
Volibear is a tanky DPS fighter of some kind. He got some basic CC and tons of damage while being tanky. At the moment he seem a little OP but hey, that's just lol.

There are many ways to play him and these are my ways:
1. Solotop - TANKY and dps
2. Jungle - DPS and tanky

Please look at item section and masteries section instead of judging my guide by the "easy to follow" thingie above this.

Pros / Cons

Pros

    Jungle
    A little bit of hybrid damage
    Armored bear!
    Tanky
    Deal much damage
    Has sligth aoe
    Decent CC
    Singed and Udyr combined!
    Easy to play

Cons
    New so will have a hard time picking him.
    New players can "fling fail" if lane is pushed when ganking.
    Will most likely get nerfed
    Somewhat of long cooldowns on damage abilitys
    Expensive build

Runes

Volibear can use many different set of runes, as can most champions. But he benefits greatly from HP/AS/MS so let's take a look at some of our options:

9x Greater Mark of Desolation helps farming and harassing.
9x Greater Seal of Armor Helps great against most solotop champs since they almost everytime make physical damage.
9x Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist is just my prefrence since I won't buy much MGres.
2x Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed is just awesome together with Rolling Thunder
1x Greater Quintessence of Health combined with Veteran's Scars makes me very tanky at level 1

4x Greater Mark of Desolation together with Sunder you will have 12,6 ARpen and thats enogh in jungle.
5x Greater Mark of Attack Speed Works well together with Frenzy
9x Greater Seal of Armor In jungle armor is you savior so I use this but Volibear is not limited to these.
9x Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist As I said above, wont buy much MGres so these fit great in my build.
3x Greater Quintessence of Health combined with Veteran's Scars Volibear can jungle withour any worries.

This is a sustained setup and I recommend it vs GP and such champions. Plus the CDR is very needed!
Will together give you a great tanky early game and together with Doran's Shield plus runes you will be one of the most tanky champions on the league (at level 1)

This is probably my favorite, tanky but with nice hybrid penetration.

This will get you much gold and experiance while being fully buffed all the time, but always ask yourself if it's worth it!

With the thing above I try to easy explain that you won't find AP build's here since Volibear only scale's with 2 abilitys and not even very good on those.

Like ALWAYS with Volibear there are many different ways to go but there are some examples and guidelines:

Solotop example 1:

Start:
Doran's Shield

At first recall buy at least:
Targon's Brace
Boots of Swiftness/ Mercury's Treads

Second recall should look like this:
Kindlegem
Giant's Belt

Mid game:
Zeke's Harbinger
Spirit Visage
Chain Vest

End game you get something like this:
Atma's Impaler
Warmog's Armor
Banshee's Veil

If the game is still running you could sell Spirit Visage and go for this:
Madred's Bloodrazor

Solotop example 2:

Start:
Regrowth Pendant
Health Potion 1x

Then get:
Philosopher's Stone
Boots of Speed

Get working on:
Boots of Swiftness/ Mercury's Treads
Kindlegem

By mid game you should have something like this:

There are many ways to Jungle as Volibear and first you have to decide if your going to build wriggles, I personally says yes!

Start:
Cloth Armor
Health Potion 5x

Ganking gear up:

Madred's Razors

Before drake get (unless early):
Boots of Swiftness/ Mercury's Treads
Wriggle's Lantern

Core
Boots of Swiftness/ Mercury's Treads

So basically we got 3 different "core's"

Now, after you got the core you have to look what your against!
Is their Vayne well farmed? Maybe rush a Chain Vest then.
Do they stack armor? Then maybe get a Last Whisper

Take advantage of the fact that Volibear can be build in different ways!

Why does Volibear need that? List of viable items and notes:


At solotop most champions deal physical damage therefore we want armor! Volibear needs HP and regen is important as a soloplayer so Doran's Shield fits great!


More regen will make you a great farmer and the lifesteal will make you far more sustained then the other solotop. At the very least you wont fall behind.


Like singed Volibear needs to move fast, you wanna catch up to your foe and use Rolling Thunder to fling him into your team.


Some prefer to use this instead, the CC reduction is great and may be the best choice to go with as tank.


CDR is a savior on those long cooldowns Volibear has and it also gives you HP which as you all know is great for Volibear. This is just the tip of the iceberg, it also grants 15% increased healing on self which works great with Volibear's passive and with Zeke's Harbinger.


Volibear benefits greatly from Attack Speed but the HP regen and lifesteal also synergies well with him.


Since Volibear carry loads of HP and with this build also Attack Speed you would want some AD! Since you have a tanky role you also need armor and the crit chance is just a bonus!



This synergies well with Atma's Impaler, Volibears passive and with it you will be a hard rock to hit.


Well, it kinda talk for itself. In junge you can farm faster, have greater sustain and the free ward is great! Since it is a very nice farming/sustain item plus the free ward you also have the option to go with it on solotop.


Volibear benefits from everything in this but I recommend buying CDR also because he has long cooldowns. The passive works great with all of Volibear skills and the slow is great! But expensive


Attack speed, ad and great passive. Works well with both Frenzy and Thunder Claws


HP, ad and slow. An extremely powerful item on any Volibear


Well rounded item that offers a nice amount of resistances and a second life always comes in handy.


A great item and EVERY team should have it! If no one else has it, build it! Way to good to pass up on. Every member gets a little more sustain and the HP works wonders on Volibear


When they all stack armor this is the way! (150+ armor else go with The Black Cleaver)


Do they all have a bunch of armor? Get this! AD and AS is always welcome to Volibear and the passive is great! (150 or less else go with Last Whisper


When the enemy team has loads of CC you should get this! MGres/HP/MP + passive. One of the best items on ANY champion by mid/late game!


Thanks to your passive you have or almost have the most active HP in the game so the passive will hurt alot on any AD carry. The armor can save your *** loads of times too!


Volibear benefits from all stats but the ap is a waste if you ask me. But kinda fun item together with [frenzy]


Attack speed is great, passive is great (more damage per hit) but I feel that you need to have Madred's Bloodrazor to really make it shine.

Team fight

I present two different scenarios:

River (drake):

These teamfight often starts fast and are more like a fast burst of damage to all champions.

Volibear Should engage into the first squishy foe that makes a misstake, using Rolling Thunder and Majestic Roar to position the foe at the hands of your team. After that you have load up Frenzy until you use the active to burst down.

Remember that you deal tons of damage but your main goal in the fight is to disrupt their team and handing over the squishys with Rolling Thunder.

Golden rule:
Disrupt their carry so they focus you until your team has killed them all.

Rolling Thunder Use this to throw the squishys into your team.
Frenzy Make sure you always have 3 stacks in a fight and don't be afraid to help out against the carry.
Majestic Roar Disrupt their team
Thunder Claws Use it on the squishys you throwed as fast as it's team is in range and you will deal massive damage.


Mid
Basiclly it's the same just that here you have to be patient. Wait for their carry to make a misstake while trying to harass.

In the meantime you have to protect your carry from being jumped. If that happend you WILL use Rolling Thunder to stop their damage dealer and Majestic Roar to disrupt the rest.

If you follow the golden rule everything should be okey.

Creeping / Jungling

Well jungeling as Volibear is a easy task, you will have decent HP at all times given that you run a standar Cloth Armor and 5x Health Potion you can go any route you want.

I recommend this:
Ancient Golem->Wolfes->Wraights->Lizard->Golems->shop/gank

Well, before you take on the jungle role you have to think if you will have to gank much/hold lanes much or actually jungle much.

Most of the time it is best to gank alot and if thats the case just go a normal jungle core/masteries/runes.

In short Volibear is a fun to play tanky DPS champion that follows the current meta like Urf follows Lee sin.
