Introduction to Volibear the pain bringer

Volibear has been out a week now and I've had real solid success with him. I've seen more than a few builds not really understand the character, so take this as just my two-cents on how to properly approach The Bear.

A few quick notes on playstyle and Runes/Masteries.

Volibear is a great initiator, but lacks escape. Your goal as Volibear is to get in with Rolling Thunder throw a squishy to your team, slow the enemy team's attempt at rescue while staying in long enough to NOM NOM some face with Frenzy.

To this end I build him 0/21/9, picking up every bit of health and movement speed I can, while minimizing the damage minions deal for extra powerful early-game harass.

Initiator and Swiftness synergize perfectly with Rolling Thunder while Veteran's Scars and Juggernaut both synergize Frenzy. Combine these with a starting Ruby Crystal and you'll enjoy more than a few early game kills.

If you play with a jungler and aren't often going to be able to pick up Golem Buffs with any regularity, swapping Runic Affiniity for Summoner's Wrath and a boost to your Ignite and Ghost abilities is a solid choice.

Chapter 2

The first thing people need to note is the extreme power of his passive Chosen of the Storm. An often overlooked strength of Chosen of the Storm is that it allows Volibear to start the game with a Ruby Crystal and not worry about needing the passive hp/5 of a Doran's Shield or similar.

With the Rune and Mastery set up above plus a Ruby Crystal you should be starting at close to 900hp, with your passive restoring over 250 back to you in under 6 seconds. This means at level one you have a health pool of over 1k to play with, and it only climbs from there.
