Who is Voosha
Hello I am Voosha. I play 3vs3 religiously and am very familiar with every aspect there is to it. |
There really is no difference for Garen between these two maps. Play style and item build are all the same. So expert Garen players will be very good on this map when they learn the strategies for it. Being a lane bully and a tanky bruiser are all factors of success on the Twisted Treeline map.
The reason why Garen is picked that often in Twisted Treeline is due to his lack of cc. He really has nothing. Other characters like Darius have some sort of cc, for example his pull and slow. Garen literally has nothing which is a liability. So team comps must be made around him in order for him to succeed.
All this comp has to do is have Lissandra get someone to below 50% and either Riven or Garen can finish them off. This is an execute team where if the enemy gets below half, they should die with 2 execute type ultimates.
This is another bursty comp where Garen can finish off kills that Kha'Zix may not be able to. Annie just needs to be able to stun one target in a teamfight for her teammates to deal lethal damage.

Summoner Spells
These are standard summoner spells for almost all top laners. Ignite can be used to finish off those kills incase your ult does not.
Masteries
You can go into the defensive tree if you want to be tankier, but I personally like going into offensive tree so I can bully them out of lane.
Runes
Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush
You can choose to swap out the CDR for some MR blues if you feel more comfortable with the extra magic resist, but the CDR allows for more lane pressure.
Abilities
I am optimizing damage in this ability sequence. You can max W second if you really need the extra tankiness, but usually its not worth it until you can get more items for the passive to be worth it.

Garen is already innately tanky from his W so don't be afraid to build some dps items.
The Brutalizer- Gives AD that allows his abilities to scale better and CDR so that you can use them more. On top of these 2 stats it also gives armor pen which is great if you're going against someone tanky. You can later turn this into either the Ghostblade or the Black Cleaver, but I like ghostblade better since itll essentially give you double the speed with your Q active on. You can get right to the enemy carry in a split second.
Sunfire Aegis- Not only does it give you health and armor, but it also does extra damage to enemies around you. This is great along when you spin on top of them and for wave clear.
I feel like these 2 items are essential, and from this point on you can deviate to whatever the situation needs.
Spirit Visage- great when you need more MR, gives alot of CDR and makes your passive give even more health.
Randuin's Omen- A great choice when you need more armor. This along with sunfire will give your W a huge bonus to armor. The active is great for when you're spinning in the middle of their team or chasing.
Ravenous Hydra- I like this item because it gives you an auto attack reset and it allows for more aoe dps. You can even activate this while you're spinning! Only go this item if you need more damage, otherwise the top 2 items are best.

Refer to my Voosha's general 3v3 guide for some strategic suggestions.
Early Game
Garen does actually trade well against many champions early on. If you make a mistake, you have your passive to regen back up. Garen overall is a decent laner and you should try and be as aggressive as possible. Your W will allow you to take more punishment than your opponent while trading at roughly the same damage. Ganks for garen do not really help unless they have some form of cc.
Mid Game
This is when the team should be doing very well. Even if your team cannot finish off someone in one combo, garen should easily finish it off with his ult. For many of my other guides I say to ult early, but in Garen's case you want to save your ult until you're sure that it can finish them off. Nothing feels worse for a Garen player than your target getting away with a couple bars of hp because you ulted too early. Well some of you may ask "Well how do I know they will be low enough for my ult to kill?" You can calculate the damage, but most of them time its in the middle of teamfights so you can't. The simple answer is experience. You will definitely fail a few times if you have never played Garen consistently before, and that's ok. Once you get the guesstimation down, your combos and teamfights will become very smooth.
This guide may seem very short to some of you who read my other guides. The fact is that Garen is a very simply character to play. Press Q, run at them and spin. That's not even an exaggeration, that's his best combo. His W makes him tanky for free and he has no costs on his spells, not even health. Garen is a very easy character to learn and master compared to many of the other champs. There are no wall jumps for you to learn, no timing of specific spells to pull off maximum damage. This is what I liked about Garen when I first started paly league, spin to win.
