The homepage gets hammered HARD. So it has to have heavy caching. I can try to tone down the caching on it but, I can't fully remove it. As such, that box is more intended to show that the site is active all day, more than to be a tool for regulars to track discussion.
However, if the issue is mainly that it updates so slowly that you miss threads, note that we will be adding async next / prev buttons to that box. You will be able to flip back as far as you want to see what conversations you may have missed.
So with some slightly shorter cache times and unlimited async paging on that box, will that do what you need?

Previous/next buttons would be great. Recent activity is a nice way to keep up to date with any new and popular threads, and I can see that sort of button being used a lot by regular members.
