So sad about the ducklings... at least you saved 2. :c I know what you're saying about wishing you had gotten there a little sooner, but you can't think like that or you'll go crazy. You did a lot more than anybody else would just by helping them.
Though, what are you going to do with them? >.> At least ducklings are fairly common as pets so you can probably find some info on how to take care of them temporarily! Luckily it seems like ducklings can feed themselves instead of needing to be fed by hand. My friend tried to take care of a baby dove and it ended up dying when she accidently put the food in the wind pipe instead of the trachea... it was really sad. >.< I did see this when I did a quick search though "If they have food water must be present or they can choke to death. Ducklings will take a mouthful of food and then take a drink in order to swallow."

Thanks Mowen. I know in my heart I couldn't have possibly known there were ducklings to save. I'm just glad we were the right people in the right place. I'm also pretty surprised at how, once I made it clear I was on the road for a reason, people were considerate of what I was doing. No one beeped their horns or anything. Reinstates my faith in strangers, really.
Dainou: haha, now all I need is a golden whip? :P #ducklingcare: We took care of them for the night, they were so adorable but very loud. They imprinted on us straight away and would follow us around, which was cute, but not great. To put them to sleep I had to cup them in my hands and place my cheek on their backs until they accepted it was sleep time. They'd nibble at my fingers, which I thought was them trying to get out, but I now think it was a preening kind of thing they probably did with their mother. We ensured they had food and water at all times (apparently they need access to both because they feed continuously) and we even bought a heater to make sure they were warm at night. They liked to sit on Patch's laptop, which was very sweet. Well, we only kept them for a night. Two of us are uni students and the other two are working (not to mention we live in a unit and we don't have a fenced back-yard + we live near a busy road), and the ducklings needed constant supervision, so we knew we couldn't give them the proper care they deserved. The day after we rescued them, and after uni, we drove around 20 minutes out of the Brisbane CBD, where we live, to a Wildlife RSPCA. They told us we did the right thing. Apparently Woodland ducks can nest up to 4km away from their local pond/lake. Looks like they had nested in a park nearby, and were trying to get back to the water. Unfortunately as we live almost in the centre of Brisbane, they did not stand a chance walking back due to all the busy roads. I feel really sad thinking about how all they wanted to do is go back home, but they didn't make it. I'm not sure where the ducklings are now, as it's been about 3 days, but I'm sure the RSPCA put them into good hands ^^ Here are some moar duckling pictures fo' yo. (excuse my pjamas 8D and lol at Warlemming's "awwwww" face and my sister's "I'MMA EAT YOU ALL" face) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Dainou: haha, now all I need is a golden whip? :P Yep, you are Wonderhontas, the look of Pocahontas with the heart and power of Wonder woman! I think what you did was a awesome thing, brings me back during the time I study and fed the animal at the school, they had ducks there to. Its interesting how they got imprinted on you two, as I remember the time when I read about this during school that they get imprinted on the first things they saw. But as there mother died, I think they somehow became imprinted on you instead and saw you as there mother. How did you come up with the way you put them to sleep? Seemed like it was the perfect solution to that problem and very logic now when I think about it. I don't know about ducklings, but when I took care of ducks, we filled there food bowl and made sure they had water twice per day. Then to consider its even more important with such small ducklings. Did you ever find out how old they where? Yeah I think RSPCA solved this pretty easy, probably all they need is to stay with someone until they have grown a bit and then be released out with other ducks of there kind, to take up the things they are supposed to learn. Though it was a bit hard to let them go, am I right? Maybe you could take a trip down there some day and see how they are doing? I got a friend that did the same thing, but with a mallard, very common here. She took care of him for a while, then when he grew older she let him be in the pond at our school with all the other mallards. Finally he seemed to adjust to the other mallards and learned what it means to be one, then one day he must have took of and finding the love of his life. As they leave two and two, until someone dies. Btw, more pictures of the ducklings! :P |

You mean a ducks' natural habitat is on a busy highway standing on the corpses of their run-over brothers and sisters whilst their mother is a twisted mess near the curb? My bad.
.... eugh, sorry for being rude, but I felt like if only I could have started walking to uni sooner, I would have found those other ducklings still alive. But the best I could do was stand on the road as Warlemming picked up the ducklings and put them in my empty school bag, whilst cars drove around me. He took the ducklings to our place, and I picked up my books and phone and just carried them in my arms to uni. I managed to get to class only 5 minutes late too, I'm like Super Man or something ^^
Or just Wonderwoman?
Nice story though and greatly done, must would just have passed by and not give it a second thought at all.
