Does Maokai coounter Riven?

[/quote] Ditto. He has strong duels but the chance you'll actually kill the person is low. Making them leave you alone is more likely.[/quote]

That isn't to say Maokai isn't stong, Mao is, but he's the type of option you go with if you have an early ganking jungler that can scale well into late game...Ironically I suppose Riven fits that description I think...
