You forgot to mention that smiting jungle minions grant you certain effects, like poison armour from the frog, which would be useful bot lane against being poked ^^
Also, the chicken upgrade to sweep wards.^^
The problem with critplank is, the enemy has 1 assassin that is actually good at the thing she does and you get instantly killed. I rather prefer tankplank and the utility, probably also the reason why I prefer jungle Taric :D.
BTW: On Taric, the Smite support works actually really well.

I'm not sure if this is troll attempt or not, but I'll bite.
Using smite on support seems so bad, you are limited to maybe 1 viable jungle item, skirmisher, i can't see other items being used in non troll scenario.
Lets say you decide to use smite on support, that means you can't start with gold/10 item (already huge minus), and you have to start ruby crystal/doran's shield.
Keep in mind that smite is useless in lane comparing to exhaust/ignite. If you want smite to be at least little bit useful, you have to spend 750 gold on upgraded smite item (unless you are troll and started with machete in lane).
So after aproximately 8 minutes, after most supports would buy sightstone, you decide it's time to get worse version of exhaust and buy your jungler item. Congratulations, you now have worse version of exhaust, without sightstone, while your lane opponent has sightstone, gold gain item and ignite/exhaust.
When I write it down like this I hope you can see how bad idea that is.

First,
Second, Dragon control, you can do super easy super early dragons and with the new stronger dragon buffs, this is way better than before. Same goes for Baron Buff which is stronger now as well.
Third, the jungle items are so damn cost efficient. They offer huge amounts of stats for a low price, something a support really likes.
The downside is obviously a weaker laning phase until you get your jungle item upgrade, which turns your smite into a mini-
