Ok guys here it is :) We have put out a new normalized scoring system. Before you all panic, know that this is a test. We want to see how it goes, and we may revert to the old system at any time.

The following changes have been made:
  • All score displays are replaced with a new normalized score. Some spots will additionally display "<score total> / <vote count>".
  • A new sorting option is added to the browse page, to sort by last edit date.
  • A number of lists have been modified to sort based on normalized score rather than accumulated score.
  • You can now modify your votes at any time, however votes cast prior to August 1st are locked and cannot be changed.
  • A one-time reset has been enabled for all builds created before this moment. Read below for details on this.
  • A new poll has been added in the sidebar on various pages to gather feedback. Please cast your votes!

Before you get upset over such a sweeping change, please consider the advantages offered by a normalized score. We are comparing builds to each other and as such the scores should be relative, they should be on the same scale. Now more votes does not mean a higher cumulative score, instead it means a more accurate score. This also allows us to compare old builds with new builds fairly. The old scoring method, where higher cumulated scores mattered, did not necessarily bring the best builds to the top.

You may initially be frustrated to see a lot of builds showing scores of 100%. We have restricted certain lists to exclude builds below a threshold number of votes to make this less of an issue. In other places, these builds with low vote counts and a high normalized score have not yet had much exposure. Now that they are getting more exposure, they will receive more votes, and the scores will become more accurate. Over time everything should balance out.

Due to all of these changes, as well as concerns people may have over past negative voting, we have implemented a one-time vote reset feature. I am going to flag every single build created before this moment to enable this reset. You can go to any of your own builds and find a link at the top titled "reset all votes". Clicking this will delete all votes, set your score to 0 and reset your publish date to that moment. It will be as if your build is brand new, although the comments will still be there. You can only do this once and it is permanent, we cannot reverse it once you have reset your score on a build. Feel free to make use of this feature, or if you prefer you can wait a bit to see how this new system works out.

This one-time score reset will only be offered until August 18th at midnight PST.

Please share your opinion using the new polls in the sidebar here and there, or the feedback forms, or by replying to this thread.

Ok guys, we are nearing the end of our crusade against jerks. As of 10pm tonight, any spam votes are gone. Cheaters are feeling the cold sting of ban-hammer. A new voting system has been built from the ground up to replace the old one. It is much more sophisticated. This new system includes stringent checks to prevent future abuse, as well as monitors and alarms to help us catch anyone else that tries to misbehave. If you get a false positive and are told you cannot vote even though you know you're not breaking any rules, let us know. This update was purely cleaning house up to this point, the only new feature is that voting no longer reloads the page.

Now that we've got this garbage behind us we can get back to actually making things you want! Expect some sweet new updates, including some long-awaited score and vote changes, to show up soon :)

MOBAFire Abuse: Score Fixing

by FlashJ on July 27, 2010
Some users have decided to create numerous multiple accounts in order to up vote their own builds while also seriously down voting others builds. This type of action will result in a ban of your IP address.

For those concerned we are easily able to undo the malicious voting to correct the build scores.

Sincerely
The TEAM
