RTO Here!
About Me I am a Peak 578 LP Challenger, North American Top Laner and Streamer representing Team Radiance, whose mission is to promote positivity in League of Legends. My main is Renekton, but I play many other champions when I am target banned. I also have an incredible amount of top lane knowledge that I want to share with you guys. Ryze is a strong, mana reliant mage who excels at conquering the late game with his heavy hitting abilities. He has very high burst damage, and is one of the tankier mages available. He's not for beginners, but with this guide you can surely Ryze to the top. If you like this guide, make sure to check out my even more in depth guides at my new website |
Flash is your engage summoner, your escape summoner, and all in between summoner. Take this every time. There is no reason to replace this summoner.
Ignite is when you feel like you want to be hyper aggressive during laning phase. It's damage got nerfed during 9.2, so generally Teleport is taken instead. Great vs healers such as Vladimir and Dr. Mundo.
Teleport is your primary summoner in place of Ignite, it allows top laners to have great map pressure, it's used for split pushing, turning team fights and returning quickly to lane early game.
★ The best choice of keystone for Ryze is Phase Rush. It synergizes well with Overload if you consume two runes, granting you movement speed, and it's a must have for kiting. Ryze lacks on mobility, and even though he can become fairly tanky, he is still a squishy mage. |
★ The only viable rune here as Ryze is extremely mana reliant. This rune gives him 25 extra mana every time he hits a champion, up to 250. When hitting that cap, he restores 1% of missing mana every 5s. |
★ Very strong rune, Ryze's items overcap him on CDR and transcendence converts that excess CDR into AP, increasing his damage output, while reducing his overall cooldowns. |
★ Ryze wants to scale into late game, and Gathering Storm increases his AP the longer the game goes on, making Ryze a late game damage powerhouse. Scorch is decent for early harass and to add on extra damage, giving you a bit of extra power in laning phase. It falls off late game, so you want to be scaling fast. |
★ Ryze has no sustain built into his kit, nor do we take any primary sustain runes such as Biscuit Delivery. Taste of Blood offers us this sustain in laning phase, healing us every time we damage an enemy champion. It enables us to stay in lane longer, and not get poked out by stonger, early game champions. |
★ Synergizes with Taste of Blood by increasing the healing we receive on damaging enemies, increasing with every unique takedown on an enemy champion. |
★ More AP > more damage. This is the only adaptive rune you want to take for your first two. |
★ Your last rune is interchangeable depending on the enemy match up you're against. Are you vs AP? Take magic resist. More physical? Take armor. Want / need more hp? Take HP! |

EARLY GAME
Lane management is very important for Ryze early game, he has no mobility and can't escape from a gank if his Flash is down. You want to be keeping the wave near your tower, but don't be shoved under it as this will make last hitting hard for you, and you will be at risk of losing your tower early. You can use your abilities (spread Spell Flux to minions and Overload) to depush the wave if necessary, but don't get caught manaless.
You don't want to be pushing the wave, as you'll be susceptible to ganks and as we said before, if your Flash is down, you have no escape.
You want to be getting an early Tear of the Goddess, increasing your mana pool and regeneration, along with stacking it for your future Seraph's Embrace. You can then Teleport back to lane, and continue farming up.
You'll need to know your combos well to play Ryze effectively, and they are as follows, (you don't have to cast the first Overload) -
- Overload >> Spell Flux >> Rune Prison >> Overload
This is your main combo, and the main trading combo you will be using in laning phase, fully charging your runes.
- Overload >> Spell Flux >> Rune Prison >> Overload >> Spell Flux >> Overload
This is your maximum damage combo, where we're not focusing on changing our runes, but just outputting the most damage in a short time. - Overload >> Spell Flux >> Spell Flux >> Overload
This is to spread Spell Flux to all nearby enemies, while charging your runes.
Help out your jungler if he comes to take Rift Herald , and secure first blood tower for your team. At this point you can potentially invade the enemies jungle, taking away vital XP, gold and their blue buff, if you're on red side.
MID / LATE GAME
Ryze is very good at split pushing due to his excellent wave clear, but he's also very good at teamfighting, spreading aoe damage to everyone or singling out a high damage carry and rooting them with Rune Prison and bursting them down.
The ideal times to split push are as follows -
If Baron Nashor is alive and your Teleport is available, you can split push bot lane.
If Baron Nashor is alive and your Teleport is down, you will be split pushing top lane.
If Baron Nashor is dead, and your Teleport is down, you will split push bot lane, especially if a dragon will be spawning.
If Baron Nashor is dead, and your Teleport is available, you can split push top lane.
You want to split push the lane opposite to the most important, neutral objective, if your Teleport is available. This way, you can take the majority of pressure off the objective, as the enemies will not be able to answer you solo, and they give up the objective to your team. If you know the enemies will be collapsing on you soon, you will want to spam ping your team to complete the objective as quickly as possible. If the enemies collapse on your team, you can Teleport to them to quickly reach the fight, or chunk down the enemies defenses.
Make sure you have good vision around you, so you can see enemies coming from fog of war, which you can either back off, or time your Realm Warp to get out safely, while wasting the enemies time.
If you're in the middle of a fight, you want to be making sure to spread your Spell Flux, and popping Overload for the juicy, aoe damage. You can choose to Rune Prison a high damage carry, and help your team burst them down if it's safe to do so. You can use your Rune Prison to peel for your other carries, or yourself, but even though you're pretty tanky, especially when you have your Rod of Ages and Seraph's Embrace shield, you can still be bursted down easily, so try not to blow your root unnecessarily and have it cost you your life - and potentially the teamfight!
