Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Malphite is the tankiest of tanks. easily hitting 300+ armor every game. he is also very easy to gank for post 6 because of his ultimate. Abuse him as much as you can pre 6 and then ward up afterwards. Bully him as much as you can before his first back otherwise the small bit of armor he can buy will make you feel like a wet noodle when his Q poke can be too much.
Renekton
Renekton is scary. his double dash can match your hop and bounce. He can punish you more often then you punish him. If he takes ignite, level 6 and further he can easily oneshot you if you dont build HP and armor. I recement getting frostfire gauntlet and a healing cut item into him.
Wukong
Wukong trades very effectively into mini gnar early game where he can easily zone you from the wave at most points of lane phase if your not careful. He also has multiple ways to get to you with his dash on his E and his stealth dash on his W. Play safe play back and look to poke him down and then engage with mega gnar to finish him off.
Sylas
Sylas has high all in damage early game. respect him and be patient. Stance trade with him as much as you can and if you see him E (Abscond/Abduct) towards you back off immediately unless you think you can win due to a difference in HP.
He can also use gnar ult more effectively than gnar unfortunately so be careful when grouping so he doesnt make the big 1v9 play to win the game.
tech items to build: Executioners calling and hexdrinker
Irelia
Irelia is one of if not my least favorite matchup but it is very winnable if played right.
Early look to auto her as much as you can before she stacks her passive up. As soon as it looks like she is going to stack it up its time to back off and let it drop. Be very careful around her stun becasue she can easily all in you off of 3 passive stacks and a stun otherwise you can get your spacing and look to fight back.
after you get level 6 you can look for all ins more often with mega!
Akali
Akali's Q outranges gnar auto and can easily follow up with her empowered auto so trading early into her isnt recommended so look to q poke and farm only until you can get her low enough to respect you.
Post level she can all in mini gnar and one shot you even at full hp.
remember to take the magic resist stat shard into this matchup.
Vladimir
Vlad scales like a monster and has a pretty safe lane phase because of his Pool. You out damage him hard early game with the assistance of PTA as long as you dont have to many creeps aggro'd on you. but if he doest get ahead you will have trouble even walking out of tower, so try to get your jungler to help you early so you can stay the bully the rest of the game!
Vayne
Vayne is better Mini Gnar, she can proc her W more reliably then gnar but hers does true damage she has safe disengage on her E, and then once she hits 6 she is a nightmare to deal with. Aery is my recommended rune into her, and i would also recommend some jungle pressure because she will be pushed up more often then not.
Riven
Really Depends on the skill of the riven player but she has multiple ways to close the gap between you and her and still be able to dish out a lot of damage.
I recommend going a hard kite build with stride breaker and fleet to force riven to use her abilities for gap close rather then damage
Cho'Gath
Cho'Gath is dumb, he heals for too much hp if he last hits minions which is roughly 20-70hp depending on level. early game he can heal 120-200 hp per wave if he gets them all combined with doran shield and second wind makes it almost impossible to poke him out. a healing cut is very useful against him.
i recommend taking stridebreaker into him for a hard kit build since he is immobile.
Yasuo
This is a skill based matchup. get in his head dodge his Q's and respect how fast he can gap close.
I recommend taking a tanky build with frostfire gauntlet or goredrinker with a more damage focused build.
Fiora
Fiora has a lot of true damage in her kit, a low cooldown gap closer and a way to block CC. Just stance trade with her whenever she goes for a minion and avoid her hitting the vitals on you. Most importantly if she lands her W (Riposte) whether she blocks CC or not get out as fast as you can because the attack speed slow is extreme and can or will make you cancel autos. I recommend taking Fleet Footwork or Grasp into her. Kite her to death or be so tanky she cant kill you till late game. (tank build i recommend rushing bramble vest and sitting on it)
Nasus
easy matchup with the new season 11 items. Take phaserush, build a healing cut item and get divine sunderer.
Kled
The Kled v Gnar Matchup is whoever screws up first. Other than that you can safely lane against kleds and they can impose on the wave as his all in is pretty scary.
Illaoi
Illaoi can be difficult due to her insane damage from her tentacles. Dodging her E (Test of Spirit) is very important in winning lane. I recomend Fleet Footwork into this matchup and getting a healing cut item (Executioners Calling or Bramble Vest)
Gangplank
Gankplank outscales you know matter what you do. To compensate this you should play aggro into him. dont be stupid and take free Q's (Parrrley) poke him out gain a lead and do your best to play smart and stay ahead. Ninja Tabis are a must for the matchup.
Jax
Jax can be very difficult. that being said his early game is weaker then it was last season. taking grasp or fleet has proven very powerful into him with either a hard kit build with stridebreaker or going for a bruiser build with goredrinker.
Kennen
Kennen is a better mini gnar with the exception he has a worse gap closer. so you want to just Q poke him as mini gnar and then look for really big trades during mega gnar.
I recommend taking fleet footwork into him.
Jayce
Its a battle of the poke, who ever gets poked down first will get hard engaged on by their secondary forms (mega and hammer form). I recommend going for a tanky build since his burst can be pretty insane and you can kill him with base damage most of the time anyways.
Urgot
Urgot is very similar to Gnar a ranged bruiser that waits for his opportunity to engage. Take Fleet Footwork into him. Poke him out of lane and get an advantage by a farm lead. Post level 6 you can look to burst him with mega if he is around 45% hp.
Mordekaiser
He is a melee champ that relies on landing his E (Deaths Grasp) to do most of his damage. Kit him hard and try to abuse him. Healing cuts dont work well because he can wait out the healing cut as a shield until he is safe. I recommend taking Fleet Footwork into him and if you are having trouble you can build QSS to get out of his R (Death Realm)
Ornn
He is easy to gank for post 6 so same as Malphite ward up after he gets 6, but he isnt nearly as tanky as him. you can take either Grasp or Fleet into him. Becareful engaging on him because his burst combo is insane and hard to escape from once its started.
Teemo
Welcome to death by dot damage. Teemo has gotten some great new tools to deal with gnar this season so he can be much more difficult but at the same time he is a bit squishier since his core item liandries no longer has HP attached to it.
Yorick
Yorick does high single target damage with his Q and R. but him getting to you is hard for him. Save your Jump to get out of his cage or if he is far enough back you can jump away after he sends his ghouls on you. I recommend taking Fleet Footwork into him.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere relies on lucky crits to win the early game. Respect his Spin and the chance of him Critical Striking you and the lane is easy. you can kite him easily until he gets a lot of CDR in which you shouldn't try to fight him anymore unless you are very far ahead. I love taking phaserush into this matchup because he can never really kill you unless you let him.
Darius
Darius is a special matchup because if you go even with him you auto win after level 9 due to Gnars passive gaining a little attack range after each level up. Since level 9 is a bit aways, Phaserush can help you stay safe against the ghosting Darius. Only proc Phaserush after he slows you if he pulls you in.
Kayle
Kayle has no poke and is pretty squishy. You can take just about any rune into her and win lane with them. The only problem is she scales like a monster. Try to Zone her from the waves to deny as much gold and more importantly experience to prevent the ticking time-bomb that she is.
Dr. Mundo
Has no engage onto gnar as well as only one poke tool that cant go through minions. easy to poke out and get a lead on.
I recommend taking fleet footwork into him.
Garen
Same as Mundo no engage, and no poke tools as well making it very easy to abuse Garen players, make sure to keep the poke up to keep his health regen passive down.
Sion
You can kite him extremely easily, and run out of his Q (Decimating Smash) dodging his E (Roar of the Slayer) is important because it sets up most of his other abilities.
I recommend taking Fleet Footwork
Poppy
Poppy can deny your jump very easily with her W so you can die to ganks if youre not careful with that ability and having a pretty high amount of damage on her Q, but with that being said she doest have great options to fight you other than occasionally throwing her passive buckler at you or trying to land her Q.
Singed
Any time singed walks towards you stop what you are doing and start kiting back dealing as much damage as you can to him. Be careful he doesn't start the game by proxy farming behind your tower putting you at an immediate disadvantage.
Shaco
an allied Shaco's boxes whether invisible or not can be used to extend Gnar's Hop into a Hop and Bounce giving gnar an element of surprise when fighting or escaping.
Heimerdinger
Similar to Shaco Box's, Heimerdinger's Turrets can be used to extend your hop. Downside is that it wont happen nearly as often and there is no element of surprise.
Orianna
Orianna has great synergy for the potential Wombo Combo that Gnar and Orianna can pull off by combining their Ultimate Abilities. On top of that she can give gnar shields and move speed to help better position.
Rakan
Rakan is an ideal support for gnar to play with. Rakan can provide heals, and shields and set up team fights for Gnar to Ult.
Qiyana
Qiyana's Ultimate is very similar to Gnar's Ultimate. With that being said they can keep someone on a wall for an extended period of time where Gnar's base damage and Qiyana who more than likely built full AD can clean up a fight on their own.
Amumu
Amumu has a strong engage with his Q and R giving Gnar some time to set up his R right for a massive Wombo Combo.
Anivia
Anivia and a few other champions has abilities that create terrain, letting Gnar have more access to the stun his R can offer. On top of that Anivia's Ultimate in combination with her own CC and Gnar's CC creates a high damage AOE area where the enemies will have trouble escaping.
Fiddlesticks
Unlike the other Wombo Combos Fiddle sticks has trouble keeping the enemies in his Ultimate. Gnar fixes that problem when combining his Ultimate pushing them back into the ult or onto a wall where Fiddlesticks can ultimate into.
Lulu
Lulu unlike Rakan cant set up a great ult for Gnar. What she can do is give Gnar more attack speed, on-hit effects, and survivability. She is very strong with Gnar's on-hit build or Classic Cleaver/Mallet build.
Yasuo
Nobody likes a Yasuo on their team. They always go to ham to get a good ult off usually and end up inting. Well Gnar can assist Yasuo in getting the best ultimate possible because Yasuo can Ult off of Gnar's Ultimate with good enough reaction time.
Veigar
Veigar can create a cage that stuns enemies that walk into the walls of the cage. For the most part it is pretty easy to avoid walking into the walls. So Gnar's job while mega is to push as many enemy champions he can to set Veigar up for his W, Q, and possibly his R.
Wukong
Similar to Amumu, Wukong has strong engage and some CC to set Gnar up for a great ult. The down side is he doesn't have as much CC as Amumu but the plus side is Wukong deals higher amounts of damage creating a more explosive wombo combo.
Twitch
Twitch is the second best ADC for gnar to play with because after Gnar uses his Ultimate, Twitch can follow up with his Ultimate to clean up most if not all of the survivors. It can be difficult sometimes because most Twitch's try to create the perfect Ult by themselves.
Miss Fortune
Miss Fortune loves being set up for great Ults, and Gnar is one of the best champions to set her up. Being the best ADC Gnar can play with for her high damage Autos, and Ultimate Gnar can play more of a support role trying to either peal for her or to get the fattest ult to combo into MFs Ult.
Kindred
So there is very little synergy here but more of a nifty trick. Kindred's Ultimate and Gnar's ultimate have a similar radius. With that being said Gnar can use his Ultimate to push any enemy champion out of her ult to pick up some quick kills whether the kindred is on the enemy team or your team.
Kennen
Kenen's high damage burst and AOE stuns can be used great to follow up a good Gnar Ultimate and vice versa.
Lux
After Gnar lands a good Ultimate, Lux can follow up with her Q, E, and Ultimate for a high damage burst. Unfortunately Gnar needs to push them onto a wall for them to line up for her unlike some of the other Wombo Combo champions I have listed.
Bard
Bard's Ultimate is a great tool to set up team fights giving Gnar a good window of opportunity to get in to use his ultimate after bards ultimate runs out. The only downside is that since Bards ultimate is so long range at times Gnar can have trouble getting there in time.
Jarvan IV
Jarvan IV great engage and ability to trap people in his ultimate gives gnar the perfect opportunity to get some of the best ultimates off. Even if he is on the enemy team Gnar can look for opportunities to use his ultimate against him and his team.
Trundle
Trundle is another champion that can create terrain. Unfortunately the terrain trundle makes is on the smaller side making it difficult to combo Gnar's ultimate with sometimes.
Viktor
Viktor has decent CC and an amazing AOE ultimate for Gnar to work with. I would rate him higher but his AOE isn't as large as other wombo combo contenders and his CC can be unreliable sometimes.
Taliyah
Taliyah is probably one of the best mid laners Gnar can play with. She can create a large terrain to combo with Gnar's Ult and her E ability (Unraveled Ground) can be proc'd with Gnar's Ultimate as well.

Hail of Blades has insane burst potential and strong trading patters for both mini gnar and mega gnar. Mega gnar can even oneshot some champions when taking ignite with this rune set up. Taste of blood is strong for heavy trading early and revitalize scales pretty strong with the build.

Gnar has only one animation cancel in his kit. When approaching 100 rage you can bounce and Hop and use your Boulder Toss, Wallop, or GNAR! while mid air creating a cool strong engage.
The Goal around doing an animation cancel is to catch your opponent off guard or trying to catch someone before they use an escape ability.
To Perform the animation cancel build your rage up to as close to 100 as possible. Then auto anything and jump onto something that would give you the second jump. as your auto hits and your mid air you should hit one hundred rage and are able to perform the animation cancel with any of your abilities.
Matchup Intro
Attack Range
Gnar has some special aspects to him. One of them being every time you level up you gain attack range. at every level except level 7 and 17 you gain 6 attack range. level 7 and 17 you only gain 5 attack range capping out at 500 attack range at level 18.
The formula for it is 219.118 x 5.882 x level

With his always changing attack range, I constantly use and hold the C key (Default) to show my attack range.
