OVERVIEW
Malzahar Support is a fun and niche pick into certain scenarios. His kit mostly revolves around his surprisingly good poke in the form of his Call of the Void and the complete shutdown ability in the form of his point and click Nether Grasp where enemies cannot escape.

Will this work in competitive? Maybe, but it definitely requires knowledge of how to play Malzahar first.
Overview: Pros/Cons
PROS
+ Annoying and effective poke
+ A Silence and a Suppress
+ Spellshield passive grants substantial safety
+ Good damage
+ Really good at setting up kills and ganks

Malzahar's ult is essentially a free kill whenever it is used, provided you have teammates around you to help. Even if the enemy has a particularly fed Katarina or Yasuo, a simple use of R shuts them down for his team to kill.
CONS
- Very Squishy without his passive
- Very Immobile, with no dashes
- Not as useful without Nether Grasp

Malzahar Support is somewhat of a one-trick pony as he will be lacking damage, trading it for team utility instead. He's also not exactly the fastest or most mobile champion, meaning, without Void Shift, he has no potential safety net.
Overview: Summoners
Flash: Nearly all champions need Flash as it is the most flexible summoner spell in the game. Malzahar especially needs this since he has no unique form of mobility.
Exhaust: A safer pick that scales well into the game. Ideal against burst or a particularly fed opponent, alongside having a slow to help setup kills.
Ignite: A summoner spell best used for lanes you believe you are going to win as it allows you to finish off opponents after an all-in.
Barrier: The Greedy pick; usually worse than Exhaust in most situations but can be helpful if you need to live. In general, however, you don't want to be in situations where you need to use Barrier regardless.
RUNES
There are a handful of different rune pages Malzahar can utilize. Here's what I consider the best.
Runes: Arcane Comet

SORCERY

We take the Sorcery tree because it gives the best options for Malzahar to poke the enemy as much as possible during the laning phase.
Arcane Comet is a great rune for additional damage as it provides a consistent amount of poke throughout the game, especially helpful due to your Call of the Void. Although it can potentially miss, having Rylai's Crystal Scepter reduces the frequency of the keystone missing and is vastly superior to the amount of damage Summon Aery will do.
If Malzahar spams his abilities, he is likely to end up running out of mana in lane. Manaflow Band helps alleviate this issue.
There are two good choices here, either Transcendence which is essentially free cooldown reduction, which may be useful if we don't reach 40% CDR, and Absolute Focus which is additional damage when you are near full health, which Malzahar should usually be.
Usually I take Gathering Storm over Scorch anyday since, in almost every game, the amount of damage Gathering Storm will be providing is vastly superior. That being said, Scorch is much better early during the laning phase as we attempt to make the enemy laners' lives as difficult as possible.
Cheap Shot very easy for Malzahar to trigger, especially once he obtains Rylai's. His Q applies a silence, his E provides consistent DOT, his ult suppresses the enemy. Overall, it is essentially additional true damage within his kit.
Because of how important Nether Grasp is, Ultimate Hunter is the best choice for a support Malzahar, especially considering the otherwise long cooldown of his ult. Being able to utilize it more often is just more kills for Malz.
We need as much AP as possible, so adaptive force shards are ideal though a CDR shard isn't a terrible choice if you can't reach 40% for some reason. Armor is also ideal due to its relevance against ADCs though, against heavy AP poke, MR is better.
CONCLUSION
Malzahar Support can work in certain situations, but more importantly than, everything, it's very fun to press R on someone and watch your team kill them. He's not the most effective support but he's certain strong in the right hands.

tl;dr: don't die
