[11.3] Beginners Guide To CRIT Thresh Top Lane

By Guoblide
Why AD Thresh?
Most of you read the title and wondered to yourself, "Why would anyone play Thresh with AD items in the top lane? Isn't he only good in the support role?". Well, AD Thresh works so well and is so fun because of his E ability. While the active part of this ability may seem pointless to build AD around, his passive is where everything falls into place. His E passive reads: " Thresh's basic attacks deal bonus magic damage, with the AD ratio increasing based on the time spent not attacking enemies". This means that the longer you dont auto attack anything, the more damage your next auto attack does. When you build AD items and run runes like Dark Harvest and Hail of Blades then you can dish out MASSIVE amounts of damage. Running around bopping people with your auto attacks is some of the most fun you will ever have playing League. Plus, his crit sound is really soothing.
Abilities
Passive: Damnation

Enemy Champions, large Minions and large Monsters that die near Thresh drop a Soul for 8 seconds. Epic monsters drop 2 Souls instead. Small minions and lesser monsters have a 33.33% chance to drop a Soul.

Thresh autonomously collects Souls near him or his Dark Passage lantern. Souls are visible to allies and only become visible to enemies if their team has Sight icon sight of Thresh.

Each collected Soul grants Thresh Ability power icon 0.75 ability power and Armor icon 0.75 bonus armor.

Q: Death Sentence

ACTIVE: Thresh throws out his scythe in the target direction, becoming unable to move or attack while it is in flight.

The scythe stops with the first enemy it hits, dealing magic damage, revealing them, and stunning them for 1.5 seconds while also forming a tether between Thresh and them for the duration. Hitting an enemy reduces Death Sentence's cooldown by 3 seconds.

MAGIC DAMAGE:
80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 50% AP)

While the tether persists, Thresh is unable to declare basic attacks and periodically tugs at his scythe's chain, pulling the target a short distance towards himself. After 0.5 seconds of hitting an enemy or instantly after hitting a minion or monster, Thresh can reactivate the ability to cast Deathly Leap.

RECAST: Thresh Dash dashes to the tethered enemy, becoming able to attack again earlier.

W: Dark Passage

ACTIVE: Thresh throws his lantern to the target location for 6 seconds or until he moves too far away from it, revealing its surroundings.

Thresh and the first allied champion to come near the lantern is shielded for 4 seconds. An ally can select the lantern while in proximity of it, Dash dashing to Thresh's current location and gaining the shield.

SHIELD STRENGTH:
60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 1 per Damnation Soul collected)

An ally cannot select the lantern while silenced, grounded or immobilized.

E: Flay

PASSIVE: Thresh's basic attacks deal bonus magic damage, with the AD ratio increasing based on the time spent not attacking enemies.

MINIMUM BONUS MAGIC DAMAGE:ยป
1 per Damnation Soul collected (+ 0% AD)

ACTIVE: Thresh sweeps his chain around him and in a broad line towards the target direction, dealing magic damage to enemies hit, knocking them in the chain's direction, and slowing them afterwards for 1 second.

MAGIC DAMAGE:
65 / 95 / 125 / 155 / 185 (+ 40% AP)
SLOW:
20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40%

R: The Box

ACTIVE: Thresh surrounds himself with 5 spectral walls, each lasting for up to 5 seconds. Walls break upon contact with an enemy champion, dealing magic damage and slowing by 99% for 2 seconds.

MAGIC DAMAGE:
250 / 400 / 550 (+ 100% AP)
Enemy champions hitting any wall beyond the first take no damage and are slowed for only 1 second.
Phases of the Game
EARLY GAME:

Always take Doran's Shield and a health potion when going to lane. Start E before the laning phase begins in order to build up the passive charge. Try to poke the enemy laner with your empowered AA or save them to safely last hit minions. If the enemy walks too close to you or tries to fight you then AA + E them away. You can play passively in the laning phase because you outscale most other opponents. If the opponent is a scaling champ (Nasus, Vlad, Camille) then try to poke them and miss CS with your combos.

Mid Game:

Mid game starts around 15 minutes when bot lane takes the first turret. During mid game you should have Stormrazer, Beserkers Greaves, and maybe Firecannon or Infinty Edge. With your high damage output and the suprise factor on your side be sure to roam around the map and look for kill opportunities. Charge up your E passive and group with your team or look for solo kill opportunities. Be sure to help take major objectives like Dragon, Rift Herald, and Baron Nashor. If no opportunities occur then go back top lane and farm up on that sweet CS.

Late Game:

When the late game hits you become and unstoppable one shot killing machine. Charge up your E passive and look to hit a hook or a flay on the enemy for either your team to follow up on or for you to just burst them down. The box can be a great ability to either follow up a flay or a hook with or to just zone the enemy out with. You can hide in bushes and try to one shot an unsuspecting adc or squishy who dares face check you (This works especially well with Duskblade). Late game is where AD Thresh really shines.
Combos
Thresh has a nice couple of easy combos to learn.

1. AA + E + AA: This combo is used for short and quick trades in lane, especially if you can land one or two auto attacks after your flay.

2. AA + E + Q + AA: This combo is you best all in combo from short range. Flaying your enemy towards you and Q'ing them afterwards almost always guarantees your hook to land.

3. Q + Q + E + AA: This combo is your best all-in long distance combo. Q them and then Q again to close the distance between you and the opponent and then bop them with your beefy auto attacks.

4. Q + E + AA: Use this combo to knock them into either you or your tower. If the enemy is close to your tower and you knock them into it then this combo is extremely deadly and can usually lead to a kill.

5. E + Q + W + Q + AA: This is the combo you use to set up a gank. This combo can change based on the situation you are in. You can always throw out a W before the combo to help the jungler close the distance faster (Especially if they have CC) or you can Q and then E if you a confident that you can hook them.

Alway remember to poke with empowered auto attacks. Weave in your ultimate either before or after your E.
