[10.22] PH45's guide to Viktor, The Machine Herald!

By PH45
Hello, I'm PH45, and this is my Viktor Guide.

I am ThisIsPatrik, or just Patrik as most people call me. I am a long time League of Legends player (started back in Season 1). I'm a high-Diamond/Master tier top lane main but I occasionally play mid lane as my secondary role.

Viktor is a very late-game oriented mage who likes to control fights with his AoE damage and burst. He also has a mechanic that other champions lack which is the ability to upgrade his abilities by upgrading an item in his inventory (Prototype Hex Core). This brings Viktor powerspikes with every upgrade he gets, although the cost of it that this takes up an item slot from him.
Pros

+ Great waveclear after first augmentation ( Death Ray)
+ Scales extremely well to late game
+ Great burst potential
+ Has multiple zoning tools
+ Long distance poke with Death Ray in lane

Viktor has great potential the longer the game goes. His ability augmentations offer great tools for different situations, although the most important one is arguably Death Ray.
Cons

- Takes long time to scale
- Squishy like most mages
- CC is conditional (opponents need to stand in Gravity Field for a while
- First base is pretty bad if you can't acquire 1150g for augment upgrade
- Has no mobility

Viktor's issue is that he takes a while to scale. If you have a rough early game and you don't get to scale enough quickly, the game might be over before you even get to properly play.

Flash: Self-explanatory. Extremely important for a champion like Viktor who has no mobility of his own. This can get you out of tough spots or potentially can score you a kill if you need to gapclose a short distance.

Teleport: My go-to secondary summoner spell for Viktor. Viktor needs time to scale and Teleport really helps you with that as you can get back to lane quickly so you don't miss XP or CS. Also since you heavily rely on augmentation upgrades early you can go pick them up and return to lane quickly.

Ignite: A choice for aggressive lanes, although in my opinion this really isn't fitting summoner spell for Viktor since he is a scaling mage, not an aggressive early game dominator.

Barrier: Pick this if you need burst prevention against certain assassin champions like Zed or Talon, although Exhaust might be a fitting option into those matchups as well.

Cleanse: Efficient choice vs comps with CC or in general vs certain champions like Twisted Fate or Lux.
Sorcery offers Viktor tools both for laning and scaling, so it is an great choice in general.

Due to it's low cooldown this keystone is pretty fitting for Viktor since you can keep getting use out of it during most trades with Siphon Power and Death Ray. This makes your trades slightly better early which can really come in handy when if you are able to poke your opponent down consistently.

Helps with Viktor's mana issues, although early on this rune won't be really too impactful. However once stacked you get a decent amount of mana from it and a bit of regen on top of it which definitely can make a difference in some cases.
Cooldown reduction is always nice to have, especially on a mage like Viktor. Having lower cooldowns on your abilities is crucial since while your abilities are down that's when you are most vulnerable.
Since Viktor likes to take his time to scale, why not have even more scaling? After a while this rune will start to kick in and you'll notice your damage going up slowly. For early game again, you don't really benefit from this much but then again you don't pick Viktor for his early game anyways.

I feel Domination is quite good for Viktor as it offers tools for him to sustain both in lane and in later parts of the game.

The sustain from this rune really helps you to stay in lane till you have the needed gold to go pick up your Prototype Hex Core upgrades. You can proc this very easily during r´trades with your Siphon Power or from further away with Death Ray.

While this gives less healing for AoE abilities, the healing is still really notable once you have a good amount of damage and this rune stacked up. Since Viktor lacks built-in sustain, this rune is a great choice to help you through-out the game.

  • Glorious Evolution (Passive): Viktor starts the game with a Prototype Hex Core in one of the item slots, that can be upgraded three times for a gold cost. Each upgrade also allows you to upgrade a basic ability, and after completing the Hex Core, Viktor's ultimate gets upgraded too.

  • Siphon Power (Q): Viktor shields himself for 2.5 seconds, while also dealing magic damage to the target enemy. Viktor also gains Discharge for 3.5 seconds, which changes Viktor's next basic attack to deal magic damage. This auto attack is not counted as a projectile so it can't be blocked by Yasuo's Wind Wall for example.

When augmented, Viktor gains instantly bonus movement speed for 2.5 seconds and the shield's value is increased by 60%.
  • Gravity Field (W): Viktor deploys a gravitational field that arms after a short delay. The field lasts for 4 seconds, slowinfg enemies that pass through it. The trap generates a stack every 0.5 seconds, and aat 3 stacks enemies are knocked down and stunned for 1.5 seconds.

While augmented, Viktor's abilities (excluding Chaos Storm), slow enemies hit by 20% for 1 second.
  • Death Ray (E): Viktor shoots an energy beam from his synthetic arm, dealing magic damage to every enemy it hits.

While augmented, Death Ray's path is followed by an explosion after 1 second, dealing additional magic damage.
  • Chaos Storm (R): Viktor creates a singularity at target location that deals magic damage to enemies hit and also interrupts channeled abilities. The singularity remains active for 6.5 seconds after casting, dealing magic damage to enemies hit each second.

Viktor can recast this ability to direct the singularity towards the targeted location. When the singularity damages an enemy champion, it automatically follows them until the target dies or escapes it. The singularity also moves fasted the closer Viktor is to it.

While augmented, Chaos Storm moves 25% faster.
> > >
You'll want to take points into your ultimate Chaos Storm whenever possible since it is an extremely powerful AoE ability that can turn fights around sometimes by surprise due to it's ability to cancel ability casts.

Out of your basic abilities Death Ray should be your highest priority to max due to it's damage output and wave clearing ability. After that you max Siphon Power since it does decent damage but also offers some safety with it's movement speed boost and shielding. You max Gravity Field last since maxing it doesn't bring that much value compared to your other abilities. The increased slow is nice but it is a lesser priority compared to your other abilities.

As for augmentations, after picking up Hex Core MK-1, you'll want to upgrade your Death Ray for waveclear. With your Hex Core MK-2 you'll upgrade Siphon Power since it offers power for re-positioning and for better trades due to the increased shield size. When you finish your Perfect Hex Core you'll choose the last ability which is Gravity Field. While the upgrade isn't definitely bad, it is outweighed compared to the other two. However with your last Hex Core upgrade you get two augmentations, both for your last basic ability and for your ultimate.
Doran's Ring
The traditional starting item for most mages. It offers some mana regen, small on-hit damage buff vs minions and also some HP and AP which is nice. Basically helps you last hit minions easier and offers you some early game stats to get you through early laning.
The Dark Seal
I'd say get this if you have to back before you can afford an upgrade to your Prototype Hex Core. This item gives you extra 100 mana which definitely helps while laning. Also the extra 25% healing from potions is helpful on a champion like Viktor who basically lacks sustain outside our rune setup.
Perfect Hex Core
Viktor's bread and butter]]. This should be your highest priority to rush every game since the augmentations to your abilities are extremely important. It gives you 10 AP per level and 25 mana per level, totaling at 180 AP and 450 mana at level 18 which is no slouch.
Sorcerer's Shoes
Gives a good amount of magic penetration to enhance your damage dealt overall. Basic boot option for most cases however you might want to switch it up every once in a while depending on enemy comps.
Lich Bane
This item works rather well with Viktor due to the Sheen proc synergizing with Viktor's Siphon Power. Due to their low cooldowns you can proc this consistently through the game and increase your burst potential. It also gives a decent amount of AP, Mana and some CDR too which are all welcome stats for Viktor. Usually a 2nd item unless you have to switch to something defensive like Zhonya's Hourglass or Banshee's Veil.
Rabadon's Deathcap
This item offers a big damage spike for you, especially once you have a bit of AP under your belt. With your items and also Gathering Storms stats combined this will give you a big damage boost to allow you to control fights with your threat of oneshotting squishies.
Void Staff
If enemies are stacking magic resist, this should be an obvious choice. This will help you get through their resistances so you can get back to dealing your damage.

Zhonya's Hourglass
Great choice into most AD assassins or even just against comp with a lot of AD damage. Seeker's Armguard helps already early on with it's armor and when you finish this item the active on it can really save your life when timed right.

Liandry's Torment
This item works really well with Viktor once you get your W augmentation online. Since it grants you slow on your basic abilities, this item's passive get's essentially procced for free. The HP is nice since it makes you a tiny bit more bulky and and it also grants you some AP and extra damage per second until exiting out of combat.

Morellonomicon
If enemies have champions who like to heal a lot ( Soraka, Vladimir, Dr. Mundo, etc), you might want to pick this up. This will cut down their healing so you might stand a chance to kill them through their sustain.
Banshee's Veil
This item is a good choice into comps with heavy AP threats, who thrive of getting certain abilities off to kill you. They will have to first pop your shield before attempting to oneshot you, which gives you a bit more time to plan out your escape or retaliation.
When lane phase begins, look to play semi-aggressive for the first level or two since Siphon Power is a great tool for trading and most mid laners can't match you since you have damage and a shield. After a couple levels though tone it down a bit and look to poke from range and farm, although keep in mind to manage your mana. Your goal should be to back with at least 1150g so you can upgrade you Prototype Hex Core to a Hex Core MK-1 so you can augment your Death Ray. This will improve both your trading and wave clear big time which will help you gather gold for your next augments and overall have a better control of the lane.

As explained in the items section, if you are forced to base before having enough gold for your Hex Core upgrade, buy a Dark Seal since it is a decent item in general for laning. Other than that, potentially look to pickup Boots to return to lane faster and also vision with Vision Wards is important on an immobile champion like Viktor. You are very prone to getting ganked due to your lack of mobility and since you are a scaling champion you aren't exactly going to pull off 1v2 situations, especially in the early stages of the game.

If you haven't fallen behind you should be pretty safe to just waveclear with Death Ray in lane since the range on it is quite decent, although be careful of dives depending on what champions the enemy comp has. At this stage you aren't really looking to pick fights unless you are ahead or in a matchup that you can abuse.

Mid game is where Viktor starts to shine a bit, since you'll most likely finish your Perfect Hex Core along with an item or two if you have done well. You can keep waveclearing mid lane so your opponent has to stick under their tower, or in the case where they don't, you'll take their tower down.

Also due to Viktor's strong waveclear, he can roam pretty decently, although you need to have vision coverage so you won't get caught while roaming. Again, Vision Wards are a strong tool during all stages of the game, and only cost 75g so if you have space in your inventory, I'd advise keeping at least 1 there for situations like taking objectives or in general just keeping vision coverage up.

During late game you should look to force teamfights and objectives due to your huge damage output and AoE damage, which especially in tight spaces like in the river/jungle can be very threatening for the enemies. Keep in mind to position so that you aren't an easy target since you'll need to stay alive to deal your damage.

Look to poke from range with your Death Ray and use the movement speed from Siphon Power to re-position if needed. Gravity Field is a powerful tool if your enemies fall for it. When they get pulled in and stunned, it is a great setup to get damage off with your Death Ray and Chaos Storm. Your teammates can take advantage of that too, to get off big AoE abilities onto multiple targets, potentially winning teamfights off that alone. Also remember that Chaos Storm interrupts channels, meaning you can cut away some powerful abilities from opponents if they choose to cast them at the wrong places at the wrong time.
Viktor is one of the more fun mages in the game in my opinion as he revolves around positioning due to his low mobility and also has the ability to control fights due to his kit being mostly AoE. His scaling is very high and hard to match late game unless enemies have tools to really catch him off-guard.

Any feedback on this guide is highly appreciated!

Have fun blasting your opponents away as Viktor!
