Champion Build Guide

[10.9] ♥ DatKawaiiBunny's Sona Support Guide

By DatKawaiiBunny

♥ Please note I will not be going over the Laning Phase. My goal is to explain the champion's pros, cons, runes, summoner spell options, items, abilities, and combos. Sorry in advance, please enjoy the guide! ♥

Welcome to my Sona My name is DatKawaiiBunny, and I'm a Silver I ADC & support main. I've been playing since season 7. Sona is the first support champion I mained. She's my go-to for ranked and clash. She has a spot in my heart, so I made a guide for our lovely Maiden of Strings.

Pros

♥ High Damage Poke

♥ AOE Movement Speed

♥ AOE Stun

♥ Gains Mana Back From Auras

Sona has always been my go-to for ranked. She has a great poke early game with Hymn of Valor. Her ultimate Crescendo is an AOE stun that can easily turn the tables in a teamfight and her Song of Celerity provides you and your allies with a massive movement speed boost.
Cons

♥ Uses Mana Early Because of Aria of Perseverance

♥ Squishy

♥ High Cooldowns on Abilities Early

Sona uses up a lot of mana early because of her [[ARIA OF PERSEVERANCE especially if it's a poke lane and you need to constantly heal your ADC. She's also really squishy, but she has Song of Celerity for an escape when it's off cooldown. Before you get cooldown items, Sona has some high cooldowns on her Crescendo and Aria of Perseverance since I usually put the majority of my points in Hymn of Valor.

Summon: Aery
Summon Aery is the rune you want to take on Sona. It gives your poke more damage and it increases the shield on Aria of Perseverance when you use the ability on an ally. Aery shields your allies for 35 - 80 based on level (+ 25% AP).

Manaflow Band
Manaflow Band gives you 25 mana every time you hit an enemy champion with an ability. It also gives you up to 250 mana. This allows you to poke more and use your heal without draining your mana completely. This is good for Sona since you usually up a lot of mana early. Plus, you get extra mana when you poke with Hymn of Valor.

Transcendence
Transcendence grants you 10% CDR. This helps with her high cooldowns. This rune also comes in handy later in the game since it turns your extra CDR into AP. You can also take Celerity. All movement speed bonuses are 7% more effective and you gain 1% movement speed.

Scorch
Scorch is a great rune for the laning phase. When you hit an enemy with an ability, it deals 10 - 30 bonus magic damage based on level. I take this so I can do more damage with Hymn of Valor. You can also go Gathering Storm if you want extra AP. Every 10 minutes, you gain adaptive damage. At 10 minutes, you gain 8 AP. It increases to 24 at 20 minutes and so on.

Biscuit Delivery
Biscuit Delivery restores 10% of your missing mana and health for 15 seconds. It also increases your mana cap by 50. You get 3 biscuits in total. 1 every 2 minutes. I take this for the majority of my supports since it restores mana. You can also take Magical Footwear for the free shoes before or after 12 minutes and for the extra movement speed.

Cosmic Insight
Cosmic Insight gives you a lot of Cooldown reduction. +5% CDR, +5% max CDR, +5% summoner spell CDR, and +5% item CDR. This is the rune you always want to take if you take inspiration for your secondary.

Ability Sequence

♥ Passive: Power Chord

After you cast 3 abilities, your next basic attack will deal 20 - 240 (at levels 1 - 18) (+20% of ability power) bonus magic damage and you will get an additional effect, which depends on the last ability you cast.

♥ Power Chord - Staccato: Deals 40% extra damage

♥ Power Chord - Diminuendo: Reduces the target's damage by 25% (+4% per 100 ability power) for 3 seconds.

♥ Power Chord - Tempo: Slows the target by 40% (+4% per 100 ability power) for 2 seconds.

♥ Hymm of Valor

Sona sends out a projectile that deals 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160(+60% of ability power) to the nearest enemy targets (this includes minions). Sona and nearby allies in the aura deal extra damage. Sona gains 30 mana when she hits an ally with an aura.

♥ Aria of Perserance

Sona heals herself and a nearby ally for 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 (+25% of ability power). Sona and nearby allies in the aura are shielded for 1.5 seconds. Sona gains 30 mana when she hits an ally with an aura.

♥ Song of Celerity

Sona gains 20% (+3% per 100 ability power) movement speed for 3 seconds. She gains an additional 4 seconds if she's out of combat. Allies in the aura also gain 10 / 11 / 12 / 13 / 14% (+3% per 100 ability power) movement speed. Sona gains 30 mana when she hits an ally with an aura.

♥ Crescendo

Passive:

Each level of Crescendo reduces the cooldown on her other abilities by 10 / 25 / 40%.

Sona sends out an AOE projectile that stuns and makes enemies caught dance for 1.5 seconds. It also deals 150 / 250 / 350 (+50% of ability power) magic damage.

  • Spellthief's Edge is the basic starter item on Sona. She needs AP because of her strong poke. With this item, With this item, you get 8 AP, 10 health, 25% mana regeneration, and 2 gold per 10. With Frostfang you get 15 AP, 70 health, 50% mana regeneration, and 3 gold per 10. You need to earn 1,000 gold so you can upgrade into Shard of True Ice. With Shard of True Ice you get 45 AP, 100% mana regeneration, and 100 health.
  • Ardent Censer is the main item you want to build on Sona.It increases your heals and shields by 10%. It provides 60 AP, 50% base mana regeneration, and 10% cooldown reduction. Sona has a powerful heal and shield Aria of Perseverance.
  • Redemption also grants a 10% bonus on healing and shielding. Redemption gives 10% cooldown reduction, 200 health, 50% base health regeneration, and 150% base mana regeneration. It has a unique activation. Targets an area within 5500 range. After 2.5 seconds, call down a beam of light to heal allies for 30-370 (based on target's level) and deal 10% of maximum health true damage to enemy champions and 250 true damage to minions (120-second cooldown). It can be used while dead. This also increases the power of Aria of Perseverance.
  • Athene's Unholy Grail gives 30 ap, 10% cooldown reduction, 30 magic resistance, and 100% base mana regeneration. When you damage an enemy champion, you gain Blood Charges, and you can get 100 - 250 max. When you heal an ally, it consumes the charges. There's another passive for Athene's Unholy Grail "Dissonance: Grants 5 ability power for every +25% base mana regen. Disables Harmony on your other items." I don't usually take this item unless the enemy team has a lot of AP and poke. I think Ardent Censer is a better item to take.
  • Locket of the Iron Solari is a situational magic resistance item, or if you want extra armor. You get 30 armor and 60 magic resistance. When you activate the item, you and your nearby allies get a 130 - 300 (+20% of the caster's bonus health) shield. Also, if Locket of the Iron Solari is cast on the same target within 20 seconds, the cooldown will be reduced by 75%. I take this if there's a lot of AP on the enemy team or if I need an extra shield.
  • Zeke's Convergence After casting your ultimate, you and your ally gain an aura for 10 seconds. Nearby enemies get slowed by 20%, while your ally's attacks burn targets for 30% bonus magic damage for 2 seconds. Frostfire slows a burning enemy that's ignited by frost storm. It deals 40 magic damage per second and slows by 40% for 3 seconds. You have to bind to an ally. You also get 60 armor, 10% CDR, 30 magic resistance and 250 mana I love this item on Sona. I take it since Crescendo stuns enemies in a targeted area. The item passive is very useful for Sona and it makes her less squishy since it gives you armor and magic resistance.
  • Archangel's Staff is one of the last items I build on Sona. You get 650 mana, 10% cooldown reduction, and 50 AP. With the passive, you "gain Ability Power equal to 1% of your maximum mana. Refunds 25% of Mana spent." The other passive is as followed "Mana Charge: Grants a charge every 4 seconds, up to 3 charges. Each spell cast or mana expenditure consumes a charge and grants +8 mana, up to a maximum of 750 mana." I poke a lot on Sona so I like the extra AP and mana.

These are the places I usually ward. Some factors change my warding, like ocean dragon or if we're losing.
  • Blue Dots are of course the Blue Team.
  • Red Dots are of course the Blue Team.
  • White Dots are Control Wards.

This is my early game warding for blue team.

  • I usually use my control ward for Baron, Dragon and Rift Herald. I put a control ward in the bush near the wall or in the triangle bush. I sometimes put it in the middle bush, but it depends.
  • I focus on warding the river and bushes in the bot lane.

This is my Mid-Late game warding for the blue team.

  • I still ward the objectives with the control ward.
  • I focus on warding deep into their jungle and in our jungle.

This is my early game warding for the red team.

  • Just like the blue team warding, I use a similar method. I ward the objectives Baron, Dragon and Rift Herald. I focus on warding the river, triangle bush, and in the lane. I also ward the bush near the dragon, or near the blast cone.

This is my Mid-Late game warding for the red team.

  • I still ward the objectives with the control ward.
  • I also ward deep into their jungle and around the objectives.

Flash

Flash teleports your champion wherever your cursor is. Flash can be used as an engage for Sona because of her Crescendo and Power Chord. It can, of course, be an escape. Plus, it's a key spell for every champion, except Yuumi.

Ignite

Ignite deals damage 70 - 410 true damage on a targeted enemy champion for 5 seconds, and applies grievous wounds, which reduces all healing received and regeneration rates by 40% I usually take this on Sona for the kill potential and if I'm against Soraka.

Exhaust

You can also take Exhaust for your Power Chord. It slows the enemy by 30% and reduces their damage by 40% for 2.5 seconds. Power Chord - Tempo has the same effect.
