[13.20] Toplane STOMP Malphite Guide

By bocchicken
Prequel to the Sequel
Howdy gamers, I'm boc and I was a Coach with Cloud9 for 2 years. Now, I'm the Coaching Manager for C9's performance partner, FITGMR!

This is the build I take into SOLOQ with an 88% winrate.

Malph is a formerly underappreciated tank that fits into almost any comp and provides great engagement as well as a solid frontline.

He is very ALSO straightforward which also makes him easy to pick up, BUT has some surprising amount of depth where you can use your own unique playstyle to pilot him how you prefer (;
Build Summary
You are here to slap people around.
W max + Iceborn + Grasp + Attack Speed Runes = the tankiest duelist on the rift.

Grasp procs help you win early trades and stay in lane, and after you pick up early kill participation, the inspiration helps you get through rough matchups and sustain high mana costs.

Comet poke comes online after you have 2-3 points in Q (At levels 4 or 5) and can very easily net you some kills as people totally disrespect your damage. This can either be done with the iceborn buildpath if you need more armor/utility OR the Rod buildpath if your team lacks AP.

I've expirimented with other secondary trees, such as domination for Ultimate Hunter or precision for alacrity, but while it CAN work, it's much safer to just go inspiration and get through your weak early laning and giving your cosmic insight for the summoner spell Cooldown on Flash for your engages and TP for your wave management/macro lategame

Situational / Non core items as well as breakdowns on each matchup are listed here as well. Let me know if i forgot one!
Pros / Cons
Pros

+ Constant Threat to enemy backline
+ Spikes HARD at first item
+ Almost guaranteed win if into all AD comp
+ AOE abilities = ez to farm and push with
+ Simple and straightforward abilities

Survive until you have your Sunfire + Iceborn. After that it is smooth sailing into almost every matchup. If you hit a 4 or 5 man ultimate, you are almost guaranteed to win the teamfight. It is important to pickup early wards to drop in the river to prevent ganks setting you too far behind.
Cons

- Weak early into many matchups
- Easy to gank if overextended pre-6
- If ult is down, no hard CC
- Does poorly into AP matchups
- Cannot solo carry if team is behind UNLESS full AP

Gets bullied by ranged matchups before he gets items. Can be very easy to gank after his ult or flash has been burned. Does not do nearly as well into heavy AP comps. Sometimes necessary to sacrifice CS early to stay in the game. Waveclear before being able to max W/E or get bami's is also a bit rough
Spells

Flash: If you aren't running flash you are trolling. You need it to escape ganks or to set up good ults for your team.

Teleport: Use to get back to lane after getting pushed out early, or to TP for a countergank ONLY after you are lvl 6.
Masteries
  • Grasp: Synergizes well with your kit/ only good tank mastery on malph
  • Demolish: Tower plate gold after you solo kill your laner :^)
  • Conditioning: buffs your resistances past 12min
  • Overgrowth: more HP = OP
  • Biscuit Delivery: Lane sustain pt1.
  • Cosmic Insight: Reduced summoner spell CD = free LP
Items
These are your boots of choice in 80% of your matchups. They synergize well with your passive, W, and with iceborn.

The bread and butter of this build. Provides a larger AOE slow that scales in size based on armor. also gives more dmg with sheen passive

Handsfree farming + built in auto trading in 1 item = a REAL good time. provides good survivability early with just bami's

Gives all your abilities (and your teammates!) a slight bump in dmg w/ it's MR shred and provides more CDR as well as resists against any AP threats

This item was made for malphite (and rammus) Perfect synergy with every aspect of your champion and build

THE PREMIERE CASS/SINGED/ANIVIA/ANY AP CHAMP IN THE GAME COUNTER. *Build only in certain situations*

More innate tankiness and the ability to recover after disengaging a poor fight. CDR is also nice

Sacrificing HP for more utility. The mana it gives is nice, but not necessary, consider building into heavy AD teams that AA a lot. (Jax, Trynd, AD mids)

Good situational buy into teams with high attack speed or crit

Great 1st item when you need early MR and/or can't utilize Iceborn fully due to the lane matchup.

Raw HP, CDR, and a great item to buy if the enemy has a juggernaut on their team (someone who is very slippery) that you NEED killed ASAP and there is a chance they survive your teams burst in the duration of your CC. Can also let you split into a bad matchup more easily.

Decent sustain and solves all your mana problems. Consider building if your team lacks an AP threat or you can bully HARD with Q poke but can't trade with other abilities due to the matchup.

The poor-mans mythic. I ONLY take this in games where I know I'm going to get 0 gold (I get tower-dove 3 times by the entire enemy team, or I have a giga smurf on my team that I need to keep alive no matter WHAT)
Teamfight Stuff
Your ultimate acts as a nuclear deterrent as well as a means of initiation. You can use it to zone the enemy team off of objectives, or to help your team ward up or clear enemy vision.
Using your ult on multiple targets is preferred but prioritize the highest threat on the enemy team above all else. Communicate with pings to let your team know when you are about to go in so they can follow up with a wombo.

It is also VERY important to note: sometimes just having your ult up but NOT using it is just as good as using it. The enemy carries will have to respect you, and devote more mental resources to spacing your ult correctly, this will make them play more safely or from a further range than normal and can give the rest of your team the space they need to move up safely. Do not be AFRAID to use your R, but don't feel like you need to burn it on cooldown
