[11.14 / 11.15] How to climb with Kassadin!

By hawolt
About me
Welcome to Hawolt's Kassadin Guide!

Hello to the person reading this, my name is Hawolt, thank you for chosing my guide. I started playing Kassadin in Season 8 and quickly became very good at it, managing to hit Diamond 1 in Season 9 on both EUW and EUNE.

I hope there is something new for you to learn in my guide in order for you to achieve a similar experience whilst playing Kassadin as, once you master this champion and learn the limits you will start to have alot of fun.

I regularly stream on Twitch incase you'd like to ask something or simply watch to learn.
Pros / Cons
Pros
+ Mobility and roam potential
+ Alot of Damage
+ Fits into almost any team
+ Strong Sidelaner
+ Insane Scaling
+ Snowball potential
Kassadin is a very interesting Champion allowing you to completly change the game pace as soon as you hit level 6. You can put preassure on the entire Map by using Riftwalk to roam around the map quickly. This is a deciding factor that can completly turn around the game in your favour by assisting your teammates and putting both them and yourself ahead. Once you bought Lost Chapter you will notice a significant change in damage, this will allow you to use Riftwalk in combination with Force Pulse, Nether Blade and Null Sphere to deal alot of damage, even more with Electrocute which results in almost one-shotting your enemies.
Cons

- Weak early without Electrocute
- Hard lane phase without fleet
- You need to know your damage
- Hard time once you fall behind
- Item actives are important
- You need to manage your mana
Sometimes a matchup will not allow you to completly take over as Kassadin. It is important to learn not to greed and be patient in this situation as someone once said Patience is Virtue. Avoid using Riftwalk without Lost Chapter as otherwise you will find yourself out of mana very quickly. Punish your enemies mistakes whenever possible and avoid using Riftwalk unless you now you can get out of the situation you jump into because being any downtime is putting you further behind and not ahead and once you are behind it can become a struggle to get back into the game, especially into enemies that will punish any mistake.

Runes
Electrocute is by far the best rune for Kassadin in the Domination tree. At level 1, in combination with Nether Blade or Null Sphere you can easily trigger Electrocute to deal alot of damage to your enemy.
Taste of Blood will help you with maintaining health throughout laning, since you do not have Fleet Footwork you need to be careful with your healthbar.
As Kassadin you aim to take over the game and dominate the enemy which makes Eyeball Collection the perfect choice in order to get some extra damage. This should help with extending your lead once you get ahead.
Lastly Ravenous Hunter is the ultimate rune in your kit that will allow you to maintain enough health to Riftwalk around and control the map.
The double adaptive damage is really nice for early kills, be aware of the fact that Ignite and Electrocute alone can take your enemy to half hp. Abuse Riftwalk as soon as you get it and start farming gold and Mejai's Soulstealer stacks.
Basically Fleet Footwork has an will forever be the safest option to play Kassadin since most players think of him as a scaling champion. You want to get to level 16 as fast as possible to start being useful, but in reality you can start scaling at Level 3 and finish scaling at Level 6.
Since the nerf of Presence of Mind it is not really that good anymore and Triumph does not add alot with the mainly defensive playstyle of this tree. Leaving Overheal as the last viable option. You heal from Fleet Footwork, Taste of Blood and Ravenous Hunter allowing Overheal to actually be useful throughout the game.
Ever had someone smart in your enemy team that focused you and you lost a game? Look no further Legend: Tenacity is the perfect choice to avoid getting picked out. Your goal as Kassadin is to stay alive and take over the game, not sit at fountain staring at your screen.
To round things up Coup de Grace will allow you to execute enemies easier and get some kills whenever possible. Whilst Last Stand and Cut Down might seem nice in some matchups, they really are not.
Once again we opt for double adaptive damage, otherwise we are no threat and we do not want to allow the enemy to take over the game.
Summoner Spells

SUMMONER SPELLS
-
FLASH: This is your core summoner spell and should never change, Using Flash + Riftwalk can make the difference between a win or loss, you can close the gap between yourself and the enemy backline and assasinate someone followed by Zhonya's Hourglass. There is alot of potential with Flash and in addition it is a great spell to avoid dying to an early gank.
IGNITE: Personally I use Ignite whenever I know I can dominate the game. This spell is underestimated, especially early paired with Electrocute it is a great source of damage for an early first blood, it allows you to take over your lane and build an early lead
TELEPORT: Once your enemies become a bit more thoughtful Ignite wont really make the deal and you will have to find another way to build and extend a lead. Teleport proves really useful here as it will make you play more around objectives, it is perfect in matchups that can bully you out of lane, since you can comeback instantly without missing alot of experience. Furthermore you can influence sidelanes and snowball with your teammates to victory.

SKILL SEQUENCES

Obviously you want to pick Riftwalk once you hit Level 6, 11 and 16 as this is your most useful and powerful spell.

Taking Nether Blade at Level 1 against any unexperienced player is not only great for dealing tons of damage on level 1 in combination with Electrocute, it also helps clearing the wave faster with the additional damage on your auto attacks and the auto attack reset it provides, this way you should be able to hit Level 2 before your enemy does.

Picking Null Sphere at Level 2 is the only good choice since you will not have any way to properly stack up your Force Pulse. Null Sphere might allow you to deal enough damage on Level 2 paired with Ignite and Electrocute to gain first blood.

Finally Force Pulse at Level 3 is extremely good. Keep in mind to use Force Pulse thoughtfully as it can prevent your death on a gank if used properly. If you think you have not had enough damage to solo kill your laner, at this point you should be able to. Force Pulse is the first Spell to max since it deals damage to multiple enemies and enables us to kill multiple people quickly and snowball to victory.

Taking Null Sphere at Level 1 is useful to avoid magic damage from your enemy. Attempt to use Null Sphere on your enemy before his spell hits you, this way you block his magic damage, deal damage to him and heal with Ravenous Hunter and Taste of Blood.

Picking Nether Blade at Level 2 will make it easier to farm or deal damage to your enemy if he walks up for whatever reason to punish him. You can play around Fleet Footwork in order to maintain a high health.

Finally Force Pulse at Level 3 gives us a slow which allows us to get close enough to our enemy to use Nether Blade in order to deal more damage. Make sure to not tank an entire wave of minions and to thoughtfully use your Null Sphere to avoid damage.

Taking Nether Blade at Level 1 against AD is the only viable option since you want to return equal damage to your enemy. Make sure to play around Bone Plating early when fighting to avoid taking excess damage.

Picking Null Sphere at Level 2 is again the only option we have as Force Pulse needs to be stacked in order to be used. We can use Null Sphere to take any creep we would be unable to take without getting hit by our enemy if Bone Plating is on cooldown.

Finally Force Pulse at Level 3 gives us a slow which can be very useful into a champion like Yasuo or Irelia, make sure not to use Force Pulse unless they come very close, this will allow you to get out of distance to avoid taking free damage. If possible attempt to use Nether Blade and Null Sphere or an auto attack in order to proc Electrocute whenever possible.
Items

Dark Seal

Cloth Armor

Doran's Shield
Normally you will want to start with a Dark Seal at the beginning, the effect it has on Refillable Potion and the potential bonus AP is great. Paired with Ignite and Electrocute this gives you the chance for an early kill.

Cloth Armor should be considered into any matchup that is AD and can get close to you pretty easily. Consider this into a matchup like Irelia or Yone for example. Seeker's Armguard will only be 600G on your first back and you benefit alot from it.

Doran's Shield is rarely taken, a real bully like Tristana or Lucian makes this item viable. Without it you probably will fall to behind early and you will want to avoid that situation.

Luden's Tempest

Everfrost

Liandry's Anguish
Luden's Tempest is a great choice for alot of damage, perfect to abuse the enemy and quickly snowball the game. Combine this item with Electrocute and you instantly have alot more burst to take down your enemy. You should not pick Luden's Tempest unless you also took Ignite.

While Everfrost is currently by far one of the best options I still prefer Luden's Tempest, just because I enjoy having fun whilst playing. Everfrost is a great choice not only by the stats it provides but also the item active. You can use it to wave-clear faster, gap-close your enemy or build a gap from your enemy. Not only that but using this item active counts as a stack towards Force Pulse.

Someone mentioned Liandry's Anguish in this guide's discussion section and I went ahead and tried it and it CAN be a very good option. With both Luden's Tempest or Everfrost you wont have enough damage to take down a real tank. If you believe your team wont have any damage either or will not manage to stay alive to kill that enemy then Liandry's Anguish gives you a good chance at doing it yourself.

Banshee's Veil

Void Staff

Morellonomicon
Incase the enemy team has two or more AP based Champions you should consider buying Banshee's Veil as it will lower their damage drastically whilst providing you with a spell shield at the same time.

Somehow no-one dodged and your team decided to pick alot of AP Champions and your enemy is stacking up Magic Resistance? Try a Void Staff it does wonders!

Morellonomicon should be considered when for some reason you start healing the enemy with your abilities instead of damaging them, stop the heal and get a chance at actually killing them. Especially if the enemy team consists of something like Soraka, Dr. Mundo, Vladimir, Kayn or Olaf Morellonomicon should be bought.
