[12.1] PH45's guide to Shyvana, the Half-Dragon!

By PH45

Hello, I'm PH45, and this is my Shyvana Guide.

Hello and welcome to my Shyvana guide. I go by the username of PH45, but usually I go by the name Patrik. I am a long time League of Legends player (started back in Season 1). I'm a top lane main, but I've played all the roles through my years of playing League. Shyvana has always been one of my favorite champions since her release, but since she transitioned away from top lane to jungle I didn't play her as much until recently again. While she is in some terms a bit outdated she is still a lot of fun in my opinion.

My currently played EUW accounts

I also got multiple other accounts but right now I'm mainly playing on the account I listed above.

Check out my YouTube channel where I occasionally post League related videos!

Pros

+ Mechanically simple, easy to pick up
+ Unstoppable on ult
+ Great wave clear with W
+ No resources, abilities have no costs
+ Has an auto reset
+ Good duelist once gets a few items

Shyvana has a lot of good traits like being simple, having waveclear and also being a good duelist. She can snowball extremely hard with a lead and also become extremely tanky while still having damage threat during later stages of the game.
Cons

- No crowd control
- Easily kited
- Difficult to be useful on when behind
- Passive is kind of useless if your team can't get dragons
- Gets outclassed by most champions

Shyvana can feel very lackluster especially when behind. She relies on sticking to targets to deal most of her damage, and even when you are ahead it can still be hard to impact the game sometimes due to how outdated her kit is.

Flash: Best summoner spell in the game, period. It gives you the chance to either escape from a sticky situation, or follow in for a closing blow on the enemy/to get in range for a play.

Ignite: Good for lanes you want to go aggressive on. With Shyvana you can even sometimes run the combination of Teleport and Ignite to have both lane presence and out of lane presence, but this also makes you more vulnerable to ganks, especially pre-6.

Teleport: Great choice if you want to play around your team, or if you are in a tough matchup where you know you'll get forced out a lot or if the matchup in general will most likely not result in kills. With this summoner spells you'll get map presence and pressure, since you can splitpush and teleport into teamfights if needed.

These runes are what I'd generally run. You can swap Resolve for Domination in lanes where you feel you don't need the defensive runes but instead want to scale with the sustain aspect of [[Domination.

Precision gives you tools both for scaling and laning. Press the Attack and Conqueror are your main keystone options, and runes like Legend: Tenacity are especially important due to the nature of Shyvana being easily kiteable.

Press the Attack is a great choice for Shyvana since you can proc it with your auto + Twin Bite. It adds quick burst to your damage and its very fast to proc in small trades. Conqueror scales better and is stronger later on and in extended fights, however you don't get as much value of it in smaller trades and in early laning.

Triumph in general is the best choice for Shyvana out of the runes in this section. It can save you in a teamfight or even just in a 1v1 or 1v2 scenario.
Having free Tenacity from runes is really good especially on a champion like Shyvana, since you are naturally very easily kited.
Last Stand is naturally a great choice since most of the time you will be in the middle of the fights, so your HP will quite often drop decently low unless you just get really tanky and enemies cant focus you down low enough before you kill them.

Resolve helps you scale through rougher lanes. Second Wind will help you through poke lanes and Bone Plating will give you a bit more safety into lanes where you get heavily traded in short bursts.

Simply take Second Wind for poke lanes or for lanes where enemy can poke your Bone Plating out before engaging, and Bone Plating when you are likely to get all-inned or heavily traded.

Overgrowth gives you free HP while scaling which is always nice for your tankiness later on. Unflinching will give you slow resistance and Tenacity when you are on lower HP, which will be helpful since Shyvana will always benefit from these stats due to being easily kiteable.

Here is small description of Domination secondary runes.

Domination gives you sustain, which will help you already a bit in lane, but especially during later stages once you get your stacks on Ravenous Hunter.

Basically will help you in lane in trades since it heals you for a small bit after damaging an enemy champion. Won't be as useful during later stages but the healing can really add up over time.
Gives a lot of healing especially during later stages of the game. Since it gives Omnivamp, you will heal both with your autoattacks and abilities, which is really helpful since you aren't really buying too much healing outside of items like Blade of the Ruined King.
  • Fury of the Dragonborn (Passive): Shyvana deals bonus damage to dragons and gains Armor and Magic Resistance. As Shyvana and her allies slay more dragons, she gains more bonus Armor and Magic Resistance.

  • Twin Bite (Q): Shyvana strikes twice on her next attack. Basic attacks reduce the cooldown of Twin Bite by 0.5 seconds. In Dragon Form Twin Bite cleaves all units in front of Shyvana.
  • Burnout (W): Shyvana surrounds herself in fire, dealing magic damage per second to nearby enemies and moving faster for 3 seconds, part of this damage is applied again when Shyvana basic attacks an enemy with Burnout active. Basic attacks extend the duration of Burnout. In Dragon Form Burnout grows in size.
  • Flame Breath (E): Shyvana throws a fireball that deals damage to all enemies it encounters and leaves cinders on the target, marking them for 5 seconds. Shyvana's basic attacks on marked targets deal a percentage of their maximum Health as damage on-hit. In Dragon Form Flame Breath explodes on impact or at target location, dealing bonus damage and scorching the earth for a short duration.
  • Dragon's Descent (R): Shyvana transforms into a dragon and takes flight to a target location. Enemies along her path take damage and are knocked toward her target location. Shyvana passively gains Fury per second and gains 2 Fury on basic attack and her basic abilities gain new traits while in this form.
Frostfire Gauntlet
One of the safer and utility options for Shyvana. You get tankiness and stickiness with this item. Your basic attacks create a field that slows enemies in it, which helps you to stick on targets, which is the core issue of Shyvana. You also get HP, Armor and some MR, and as Mythic passive you get 100 HP and 6% size increase for every Legendary item you have.

Trinity Force
Good item when you don't need to worry about sticking on to your opponents, and you rather want more DPS and attack speed. The Sheen proc increases the burst you have, and you also get some movement speed on-hit. Trinity Force also has a base attack damage increase that stacks up to 5 times which definitely helps your damage output. As Mythic passive you get extra attack speed from your Legendary items.
Divine Sunderer
Alternative option to Trinity Force. Gives you more health and AD, and it also gives you hybrid penetration for your Legendary items. If your opponents are tanky and have resistances, this is a better choice than Trinity Force. You also heal with your Sheen procs, which helps in extended fights and duels.

Stridebreaker
Great options for chasing down opponents. The item gives you ability haste, HP, AD, attack speed. The active gives you a small dash that deals some damage and slows enemies hit for 2 seconds. Also dealing physical damage gives some movement speed for 2 seconds.

Plated Steelcaps
Good vs autoattack reliant machups. Also if the opposing ADC is fed. I pick these most of the time unless the enemy team has heavy CC in which case you should go Mercury's Treads.

Mercury's treads, the option for CC
Pretty self-explanitory, get this if the opposing team has a lot of CC as it can shut you down pretty well.

Ionian boots of Lucidity
I wouldn't probably go these boots too often since Plated Steelcaps and Mercury's Treads are just way more useful in most cases on Shyvana. These boots are really nice though in the sense that you get 20 Ability Haste and you also get haste for your summoner spells, meaning you get to throw your spells out way more often and you'll have your Flash and Teleport up more ofen as well. If you feel like you don't need the tenacity or resistance against auto attack damage then these boots might be a good choice.
Guardian Angel
A saving grace item sometimes, since Qiyana has to get close to kill her targets, this item will come in handy since you really don't have any escape mechanisms outside your stealth and summoner spells.

Blade of the Ruined King
A key item for Shyvana. It increases your DPS since you mainly auto attack, and you can proc it's passive with an auto + Twin Bite, which will help you chase opponents down since you steal their movement speed with the proc. Other than that you get AD, attack speed, lifesteal and your basic attacks deal 10% of target's current health bonus physical damage on-hit.
Sterak's Gage
Really good item for Shyvana. You'll be in the middle of fights most of the time, so having a shield proc when you would drop below 30% HP is really nice, and also the healing you get from it's passive helps you stay in fights longer. Other than that 50 AD and 400 HP are really good stats for Shyvana as well.

Gargoyle Stoneplate
I feel this item is very underrated, when in actuality it's really good. 15 Ability Haste and 60 Armor and Magic Resistance is already decent, but it also has a passive that increases your bonus armor and magic resistance when you take damage from a champion, and it stacks up to 5x if all the enemies are hitting you. It's active also grants you a big shield and increases your size, especially in late game where you have built more bonus HP.
Thornmail
Good option if you need antiheal against your opponents. Bramble Vest is already a really cheap choice in laning phase for antiheal, so you can leave it at that while in lane phase and finish it into a Thornmail in later stages of the game.

Serylda's Grudge
Excellent item for Shyvana if you don't go for Iceborn Gauntlet. It gives you AD, Haste and armor penetration which Shyvana utilizes pretty well. Combined with a Mythic item like Divine Sunderer or Trinity Force you can stick onto targets thanks to the slow it applies with your autos and abilities, and your autos and Twin Bite will also deal more damage thanks to the armor penetration.

Early levels

Splitpushing is a good way of pressuring the enemy team. Jax excells at it for multiple reasons:
Shyvana's laning isn't all that great especially early on. She is vulnerable to getting ganked due to no dashes, so you only rely on vision control and the bonus movement speed you get from your Burnout. You'll want to mostly stick to CSing and poking with your Flame Breath during early levels, especially in harder lanes. You will sustain through poke with Doran's Shield, and you will just want to scale up. If it's favorable you can go for a Flame Breath + auto + Twin Bite burst on to your opponent, since you'll also proc Press the Attack with that combo it will do a decent amount of burst damage.

After level 6

At level 6 Shyvana gets a decent powerspike. You have an unstoppable dash, and your basic abilities gain new traits. Your Flame Breath damage in dragon form is very decent even while building AD, so you actually have a very good chance at killing your opponent with the surprising amount of damage you have.

Shyvana's waveclear is also pretty decent with Burnout and Flame Breath, so you can pretty easily get priority if your opponent doesn't contest a fight with you, or if they reset. This allows you to go get vision on the river or enemy jungle, or possibly even roam down mid lane to get a kill or burn enemy summoner spells.

You'll also want to keep in mind that getting Dragon 's for your team will give you more resistance thanks to your passive, so Teleporting to dragon fights might be beneficial.
Shyvana is an old design but still really fun champion, and a theme of a champion that transforms to a dragon is cool by itself. While she is far from best top lane pick she can still hold her ground in some matchups and if you get to scale you can surely still do some useful things.
