Threats & Synergies
One of Irelia's most difficult matchups. You will almost certainly need jungler help for this one. Start E to play safe early and try and hit him with as well as the minions. Allow him to push in and play safe the entire lane, his E can cancel your dash and basically end your lane. Make sure you avoid his True Damage on his W and only go all in if you he has no abilities up and you are at least 90% HP
Another very difficult matchup. He blocks all your autos, does more damage than your 5 stack, if you catch him out he dashes away, if you attack him he has a shield. Play it safe, most shens also run Ignite into this lane for the extra kill pressure so it's best to stay under tower so he doesn't snowball and carry. Keep track of him as it may be possible to cancel his R channel with your E and in turn save your team a bunch of hassle.
He's more of a lane bully than darius and does more damage than you can while at the same time being far more tanky.
Although her lane isnt the worst, she can make your life a living hell in teamfights. Work around her CDs and engage only when she cant knock you up.
If you fail to kill him 2+ times pre 6, you will almost certainly lose this lane. He basically out-trades you in all stages of the game. In addition to this, he is very safe thanks to his E making him difficult to gank.
Once akali hits level 6, she can basically one shot you. In addition to this, her ult cooldown is a lot shorter than yours so she can do it more often than you. However, she is very squishy, so poking her down is fairly easy. If she is 40-50% HP, you should be good to fully all in her with your R as it is roughly the radius of her shroud, so its fairly easy to hit.
Lots of CC and damage, you will need Legend Tenacity and Merc Treads for this game. She doesn't have a lot of escape potential (aside from her clone), so ask jungler for help and play around her CDs on her abilities.
Jax outscales you fairly quickly and can block all your autos (which in turn makes him deal more damage) - start E to play it safe early and avoid his stun, and then try to poke him down before all inning him.
Very difficult matchup, W his Stun and his Dash and rush Grievous Wounds and Shoulderguards to stand a chance. If you catch him out, he's fairly easy to kill, however, if you die to him early, your lane is almost certainly over.
Play around her shield, W when she dashes to you with her Stun. If you all in her while her shield is down, you can kill her before she kills you.
Try to bully Nasus early by freezing under your tower (keeping 4 minions up) and deny him CS as well as poke him, it's not easy. With this being said, Nasus is practically impossible to keep out of the game, if you roam for a few minutes he will have gained 40-80 stacks and will out-trade you.
His passive is a huge pain and his W can basically negate all your damage.
Very Wukong Favoured - play passive and seek to kill him around level 3. W his damage. Try and poke him levels 1-2 but don't commit to a full trade.
Darius abuses any mistake you make, and this is furthered by the fact that irelia is already a very punishable champion. When he Qs, Q to him so his Q does very little damage. If you manage to do this, chances are you will win the fight
You can abuse your mobility pretty hard against Urgot, the moment he misses E you can 5 stack run him down and kill him. However, if he hits his E, he can be problematic. Try and predict it and W it, if that fails, it's best to disengage as Urgot snowballs really hard in lane if he picks up 1 or 2 kills.
Fairly uncommon toplane matchup, but he can be a pain. Seek to rush Grievous wounds asap, but there's really not much you can do. The good thing about him is that he can't dive you very easily.
Kled got far more difficult when he got Grievous Wounds added to his Q. Try and all in him around 6-8 and watch for that remount.
Another fairly uncommon matchup, but when it happens, he's not fun to deal with at all. He has very high base damage and an incredibly annoying flee. W his spell shield if possible and then E, Q onto him. Look to get free autos on him with 5 stacks as he's quite squishy.
Another uncommon matchup, but skarner is a really strong (and definitely underplayed) champion in both the top lane, and jungle. He can pull you under tower with his ult basically granting him a free kill, he is also fairly safe with his movement speed and CC, ask your jungler for help and kill him that way.
This is truly a skill matchup, I prefer to run ignite into this matchup to stop her healing and ensure you reset bad vitals by leaving her vision
Garen is pretty outplayable thanks to his one dimensional nature, don't get killed by him early, abuse him at around level 6-10 before he starts doing more damage than you
Irelia plays pretty well into Mundo, I like to run ignite into this matchup as you simply ignite him when he ults and just try to hide behind minions so he doesn't spam his Q on you.
Malphite is not too difficult of a matchup, stack conqueror and 5 stack him, keep his shield down and you should win the lane.
This is a pretty easy lane, you can often catch an ornn out within the first few levels as he is fairly squishy and he has quite long cast times on his E, W and Q. Fail to kill him though and he quickly outscales you and becomes unkillable as well as doing 10% of your health with his passive auto.
He can be a pain, he'll likely try to spam Q and stun you when you are low enough for an all in. Once you are 6 you can start turning the lane around and win as he doesn't have any way of escaping.
Illaoi is the ultimate 1v2 champ with her ult, I always run ignite into Illaoi as I can stop her ridiculous healing. Never engage an illaoi when she has ult up and she has E on you. Hide behind minions and try and kill her pre 6 (especially around about level 2-3)
Never understimate how far Rengar can jump out from a bush. In this matchup, you wanna seek to catch him out if he gets far away from the brush. You can 4 stack, Q to a minion near him and go for the all in.
Slightly easier than the Ornn matchup as he is more squishy. I run Unflinching into this matchup for the free 10-30% tenacity, don't try to dive a Maokai, try and kill him around the centre of the lane with your fully stacked passive.
Her condemn can be really irritating to deal with on top of her ridiculous true damage. Be passive at Level 1 and once you hit level 2, you can start trading. Q to a caster near her and try and land your E, if you miss your E, Q out. Repeat until you hit your E and are able to all in her,
As with all ranged toplaners, his early game can be very painful. But it doesn't take long for you to outscale him. If you hit your E on him, Q on him and he should be dead after a few autos.
As long as if you don't get poked out early, you should win this lane since your raw damage with your abilities is far higher than his.
In this matchup, RUN Ignite! It is your best friend and you can literally delete Vlad's entire kit with Ignite. It's literally that simple. Ignite, then all in him.
Sion can be a pain, but overall, you kill him at basically all stages of the game. You can dash around his Q as well as cancel it with your E. He's basically a Cannon minion early meaning he's super easy to First blood. Don't underestimate his passive damage as well, it's not a fun way to die.
She can be annoying early (as with all ranged top-laners) but within a few levels you can kill her as she is super squishy and your 5 stack can melt her.
One of the more difficult ranged matchups thanks to his ridiculous ult CC and damage, but pre 6 he should be pretty easy to deal with. Do NOT get poked out by him.
Just Q over his wall and 5 stack him, you win.
5 stack, run her down
This champion still exists? Whens his next rework rito? 5 Stack run him down, similar to Kayle but easier.
Really not difficult at all, he's not tanky enough to deal with your 5 stack, nor does he do enough damage to kill you. His ground is quite a small radius so you can walk out of it.
wait a minute.....
Orianna ult is a dream for irelia, the synergy here is huge.
He Ults, you ult, cant get any better. ROCK SOLID.
Similar to malphite, he ults, you ult.
His gap closers on his ganks can help you out, and his ult is huge in teamfights.
As with most supports, she simply allows you to carry easier
Basically gives you a free Heal Summoner Spell every so often in teamfights allowing you to melt their team.
It's fun having a soraka on your team as her silence and her healing is really useful in a lot of cases. However, other supports work better with irelia such as Yuumi.
Irelia is a high skill cap, incredibly fun Top Lane Fighter/Bruiser. She has a lot of mobility but also suffers from very long cooldowns. However, she is one of the most rewarding champions to One Trick, with most one tricks having up to a 60% wr with her.
Irelia synergises incredibly well with Runes such as Conqueror which gives her Sustained Damage and True Healing on top of that. She also loves attack speed as her kit is naturally high in damage.
Why should I play Irelia?:
+ High Mobility
+ High Snowball Champ
+ Strong Teamfight Potential
+ Strong Outplay Potential
+ Strong Into Ranged Matchups
- Susceptible to CC
- Mana Problems
- Very Slow
- Not easy to play, takes many games to learn and master
This is currently Irelia's best mythic, it's attack speed is really good with her especially once you hit late game, and it also has pretty good splitpush potential with the spellblade passive which you can abuse with your E.
Immortal Shieldbow gives you insane amounts of sustain, damage, a lifeline, attack speed and small bruiser stats with the mythic passive. However, you're squishy as hell until you hit your final few items where you can start building tanky items.
Irelia's W only blocks physical damage after the change (many patches ago) and hence I see her better in Top Lane and only viable in midlane as a very situational pick. She is also a very slow champion so her roaming potential is pretty weak if they have vision on you and hence you can get punished very hard for failed roams.
Most Difficult Matchup?
Shen or Sett - both are practically unwinnable unless the enemy laner is really bad.
I really love going into Kayle and Yorick, both are really easy to destroy.
Any streamers you recommend?
Definitely ICU, he interacts with chat frequently and answers tons of questions about irelia. Venour is another good one.
Is Irelia In a Good Spot?
Since her recent buffs in the pre-season, she is in one of the best spots she's been in for quite some time.
Why not PTA?
The issue with PTA is it only procs on one person, so although it can be more useful in lane, Conqueror's team fight potential cannot be matched, once conqueror is stacked on one, it applies to all.
2) Save your Q2 to secure a kill or use it as a gap closer if they flash away
3) Abuse Irelia's auto range, sometimes you may hit autos you don't think possible. You can practice this in Practice Tool and learn the range.
4) Irelia's W can block Tower Damage and hence is a really useful tool for diving. In addition to this, it can be a useful (but expensive) wave clear tool for pushing in waves
5) If you start corrupting potion, use it to do bonus burn damage while trading
6) You can ult through minions before hitting the enemy to set up an escape/method of sustain while trading
Level 2 - Many people dont respect Irelia's early damage (especially her 5 stack) so picking up first blood at Level 2 is quite common allowing you to quickly gain a lead, 5 Stack, E + Q + Q can be deadly to many Top Lane matchups including tanks, this should be a free first blood
Level 6 - If you hit Level 6 before your enemy laner, you should seek to instantly engage (providing it isn't a difficult matchup), they should be dead before they can fully react with their abilities thanks to Irelia's low cast times.
Level 11 - At this point, you should have 3+ items and you should begin melting their backline.
In addition to this, there are other important things you have to remember in lane. Such as:
While taking towers, keep your 5 stack up by using your abilities on minions in-between as 5 stack will give you tons of bonus damage. In addition to this, If you get Trinity, you should E1, Spellblade Proc on tower, E2,Spellblade Proc on tower, W Spellblade Proc on tower as this further speed up the rate at which you take the tower.
One of the best roams you can do is a Teleport to the botlane, ideally , have your lane crashing into the tower and Teleport to a deepward. With your teleport speed boost you can often pick up a free double kill from their botlane.
As Irelia, you ideally don't want to be the frontline engager in most fights as you're fairly squishy until you hit 4+ items, If you have a support such as Nautilus or Malphite on your team, or a jungler such as Amumu, allow them to engage first and follow up with your Ult. You should aim to Ult at least 2-3 people every teamfight as this will instantly grant you 3 bonus stacks. Irelia excels in teamfights around objectives as hitting more people becomes far easier.
Before you engage onto anyone with your Q, ensure you have at least 5 stacks so you get the bonus On Hit damage
4 Stack from Minions, E, Q, run them down with fully stacked passive. Try and ensure there are minions around you in case you need extra sustain or you need a way of escaping.
E, Q, Auto, R, Q, Auto etc - Save W here for Tower shots or blocking their damage, remember to hold it for the bonus damage. Or, you can open with R providing you are able to hit both of them
R, Q around, E1, E2, Q, Autos, saving W for when its necessary

Good luck on the rift!
