Akali
The real threat with Akali is that she can slow you with her q, shroud with her w and backflip out of your e with her shuriken backflip, which can hurt your engagement. Also, since she gets extended range on her next auto after an ability, it can be difficult to trade with her effectively (if you are against a strong Akali player). When I play top lane, Sett is my choice because I understand his kit and play style. Concerning his team setups and itemization, I will look more in-depth at Sett's options below as you read through the guide.

Why choose Sett?: - He is a simple champion to learn and pick up in the top lane while being fun to play. - He frontlines well, with good engagement tools and crowd control, making his presence known for his team in lane/fights and when going for dragons and baron nashor. - He has great potential to make plays, carry his team and be an excellent team fight asset. I enjoy taking him on the rift when playing league matches, and I hope you will too. |
Sett's basic attacks alternate between his left and right punches. Sett's Right Punch is empowered, gaining bonus attack range (unless Knuckle Down is active), attacking at eight times the attack speed of the left one, and dealing bonus physical damage. His right punch scales nicely withon-hit items, so always maximize its effectiveness whenever possible. Also regenerates health based on a % of Sett's missing health. |
| Cooldown: 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 / 5 | Once you activated, you empower his subsequent two basic attacks to deal additional % max health physical damage to a target, while also triggering Pit Grit. It's your bread-and-butter ability when dealing with targets that build lots of health, you want to eliminate while also giving you a % movement speed boost to catch/chase down a target. |

As you take damage from enemies in fights, you will build up grit, equal to half of your maximum health (decays after a few seconds). When activated Sett creates a shield (equal to 100% stored grit), throwing a punch dealing true damage equal to a percent of the grit stored to enemies in the center. Enemies who are not in the center instead take physical damage. - For the best results, make sure you are stacking a mixture of attack damage and health from items/runes or acquired Chemtech dragon's to boost shielding strength, while also increasing the amount of damage dealt to targets. Also note that if you are excuted by either Pyke's Death from Below or Urgot's Fear Beyond Death, Haymaker won't save you. |

A perfect way to lockdown your target, dealing physical damage and slowing them. If you grab one enemy on either side, you will stun both targets for 1 second, which can lead to some good follow-up from all your other skills and help out your teammates. It is suitable to use this when the enemy is near minions or two champions are trying to box you in from two sides of the map zone. |
| Range: 400 | Effect Radius: 600 | Cooldown: 120 / 100 / 80 | With The Show Stopper, you grab an enemy and launch them into the air, dealing bonus attack damage plus a % of the captured enemy's bonus health as physical damage to surrounding enemies and slowing them. Timing this ability is essential because you can either deal massive damage to a squishy using their frontline tanks or use it on a squishier target to isolate them. With the high slow at your disposal, you'll be able to stick to your target after the ability lands. |
In this section, I will share some of the effective combos for Sett that are simple to understand and that you can apply while playing summoners rift (draft and ranked) games.
Playing As Sett:
- Avoid spamming Haymaker too much in fights since it's an extra lifeline for you in combat, and you will be most vulnerable without it when looking to escape or retaliate.
- Can use Flash during the cast animation of Haymaker for increased pressure.
- When looking to stun someone with Facebreaker, ensure you have another enemy target ( minion, champion or jungle monster).
- Facebreaker has great combo synergy with Haymaker, dealing extra damage after you stun them or pull them toward you.
- Ulting with The Show Stopper can be a good engagement tool when looking to start fights.
As Sett, it's crucial to have a solid understanding of the primary objectives for each game stage. Also, remember that hitting all your power spikes will be essential for your success. Keeping this in mind can make all the difference in your performance. - Early game: In the game's early stages, your primary goal should be to gather as many minions as possible to earn both gold and experience. It will enable you to buy your essential items, giving you an edge over your opponent. Another tactic is to deny your opponent access to gold and experience by setting up a freeze or trading with them. Additionally, it's essential to keep an eye on the enemy jungle and ward off the area to prevent any unexpected attacks. - Mid-game: During the mid-game, look to see if you can split push lanes while keeping a close eye on your team to see if they need assistance. You can also stay with your team and fight to secure objectives like Baron Nashor, Rift Herald, or Dragons. - Late game: To achieve success in the late game as Sett, strategic decisions are essential. These can include pushing lanes, prioritizing objectives, or engaging in team fights, which can help open up the enemy nexus. It's important to be attentive and make intelligent moves, as even a single mistake during this phase can have significant consequences. |
In some games, you may get little assistance from your teammates during the lane phase (the top lane is known as an island to many); therefore, make sound decisions regarding when to push or freeze minion waves.
Before prioritizing objectives such as dragons or rift herald, consider the potential dangers of wandering around the map:
- How much could you gain/lose when roaming compared to staying in the lane?
- What are the risks to me?
- Will I get ahead from roaming, or will I need to catch up?
You have two significant choices after the laning phase: split push side lanes or group fight; this choice comes down to whether or not your team will need you for upcoming battles or skirmishes. Should a brawl break out when side laning/farming, determine if you'll need to assist or participate; however, if your involvement in the fight or objective securing might not change the outcome, it may be more beneficial to maintain pressure from your current location.
When split pushing, it is essential to exercise caution when collecting waves or jungle camps. Additionally, being aware of your opponent's location is crucial to avoid falling into an ambush.
To maximize your chances of victory as Sett, only engage with Knuckle Down, Haymaker, Facebreaker or The Show Stopper once your enemies are in a favourable position to apply the most significant damage output.

Secondary Options
Grants % movement speed to help enter or attempt to exit a fight. It is efficient while fighting ranged foes or against champions; you'd need help running down. Excellent when paired with mobility items ( Dead Man's Plate or Force of Nature) that give you more chasing potential. With the ability to avoid colliding with friendly minions, you can dodge a scary situation if you use Ghost to escape combat. (Note: you can't walk through enemy minions with the active effect from Ghost).
An effective anti-heal option that also deals true damage to the enemy. An effective summoner spell for Sett that makes it easier for you or your team to secure a kill and begin to snowball the enemy.
Excellent when looking for quick returns to lane, reaching objectives faster/performing dives, or going to the enemy base for a cheeky back door play. At the 10 minute mark, it becomes unleashed Teleport, which is now usable on minions/ turrets, wards (not Farsight Alteration wards), or any deployable objects ( Teemo's Noxious Trap, Jhin's, Captive Audience traps or Shaco's Jack In The Box). Before you consider channelling Teleport, ensure you won't affected by crowd control or enter a mob of enemies unprepared. |
Control Wards can be placed anywhere on the map, revealing and disabling enemy wards within a 900-unit radius. Control Wards function similarly to the Oracle Lens trinket displaying stealth & camouflaged based champions ( Twitch, Rengar, Evelynn and Senna) that approach them.
Farsight Alteration (available at level 9) is a good option for Sett since he can split push and roam well with his team, making this option very useful for him when looking to gather vision. Just remember, farsight wards are fragile, meaning they will die the instant they are spotted.
Stealth Ward is the default trinket as Sett, revealing units within a target location for 90-120 (based on champion level) seconds. You get two charges that refresh every 240-120 seconds (based on champion level). So the max allowable Stealth Wards to place is three. Great when side laning/placing deep wards in enemy territory or getting vision on objectives ( baron nashor & dragons). |

Berserker's Greaves are an excellent option for Sett in matchups, where getting more punches will determine the fight's outcome. Provides consistent damage when dealing damage to objectives such as turrets/ baron or dragons.
In the games where you feel casting your abilities will do you more in team fights/or need the summoner spell haste to get Flash or any other spell you currently have sooner. Sett would thrive on this pair of Boots as a champion who doesn't use mana since you'll have your abilities up more often, allowing for more Haymaker activations to survive lethal damage.
Mercury's Treads are fantastic due to their tenacity and magic resistance while also being good if the majority or whole enemy team you're facing is mainly magic damage heavy. Since Sett can't shrug off crowd control easily, this pair helps against pesky crowd-control-heavy champions that might inhibit your ability to damage/chase or escape from enemies.
Mercury's Treads are also great when combined with runes (tenacity & slow resist shard), items ( Wit's End, Sterak's Gage) or chemtech dragon's that improve tenacity for even more resistance to crowd control effects.
Plated Steelcaps are fantastic for you; the damage reduction makes it easier to soak up damage for your backline & provides durability against attack damage compositions. Since most champions are auto-attack-heavy in the top lane, it's the preferred option unless you need another pair listed above.
If you decide to go with the mathematically correct Sett build path (attack damage/health items only), the best boots to consider would be either Boots of Swiftness since one of Sett's major weaknesses is mobility or go with Ionian Boots of Lucidity to have increased ability casts (ex: Haymaker), granting you more combat prowess.
Each of these starts can be very efficient and should depend on whom you are facing.
Just be mindful of any grievous wounds effects that could be applied to you:
- Abilities: Varus's Hail of Arrows, Katarina's Death Lotus, Kled's Beartrap on a Rope or Singed's Poison Trail under the effects of Insanity Potion).
- Summoner spells: Ignite.
- Items: Chempunk Chainsword, Morellonomicon, or Thornmail.
- Conqueror is the most optimal keystone for Sett since you do more damage (after stacking 12 times) in extended trades and are more likely to proc the healing effect it offers. In addition, going this route will allow for big plays as the game goes on compared to other keystones. - When going as a bruiser/tank setup or just wanting to take short trades, Grasp of the Undying is the call. After 4 seconds in combat, attacking a champion will give Sett additional max health, deal magic damage based on a % of your max health and heal you by a portion of your max health. You will also have more turret pressure when paired with Overgrowth/ Demolish and the item Hullbreaker. |
- Triumph allows you to sustain yourself after the fight earning a % of your max health + a % of your missing max health and additional gold with each kill or assist acquired. That might not seem like a lot at first, but it can add up quickly, allowing you to purchase necessary items faster. - Legend: Alacrity will help you deal more damage with your auto attacks and allow more pressure in the laning phase. - Last Stand is a go-to option for Sett since it combines nicely with your strategy of using Haymaker when your health gets closer to 30% remaining. In most cases, Sett fights to the bitter end, which makes this rune perfect for his play style. |
- Demolish is a way to press lane faster with Sett when combining all the health items he builds. It gives you damage to turrets based on a % of your max health, making turret sieging simpler while also being effective when split pushing in side lanes or when creating lane pressure. - Shield Bash will give you armor and magic resist anytime you get a shield from either abilities or items. When the temporary health disappears, you have 2 seconds to hit the enemy with an empowered auto attack (based on 8.5% of the last shield gained + 1.5% bonus health). - Conditioning helps increase Sett's armor and magic resist by a flat amount and then additionally by a percent amount. This rune can be very helpful when you need extra survivability and late-game durability. - Second Wind is great into poke lanes or when you will be engaging in fights often regenerating a portion of your missing health after taking damage from champions. Works in tandem with Sett's Pit Grit when looking to restore more health after fights and skirmishes. - When dealing with burst-heavy teams and you feel like getting more damage reduction, pick up Bone Plating. It will allow you to reduce the damage of the following three spells or basic attacks within a 1.5-second window (55 cooldown timer). - Overgrowth helps Sett by offering max health per 8 monster/ minion deaths, then gaining more max health at 120 minions absorbed. Works nicely with Haymaker to scale its damage throughout the game. Now while the health gained is minimal at best, every little bit counts and can make a difference later on. - Revitalize increases your total heal and shield power in combat. Synergizes nicely with Haymaker, Sterak's Gage, & Spirit Visage, offering increased shielding, while also improving healing from items such as Blade of the Ruined King, & Sundered Sky. Note that base health regeneration effects won't increase due to Revitalize. - Unflinching grants additional durability after beingimmobilized by crowd control effects. When paired with other resistance items or conditioning it becomes a very strong option for Sett in fights. |
- Choosing Transcendence provides additional ability haste to use your skills more often (permanent at levels 5 & 8 while giving an extra 20% on all non-ultimate abilities per takedown from level 11 onward). Likewise, the added cooldown will allow Sett to have Haymaker up more often, providing more chances to escape dangerous situations or turn the tide of close encounters. - Since Sett lacks mobility by default, grabbing Celerity can be very efficient when paired with Force of Nature, Dead Man's Plate or other mobility item effects ( Black Cleaver or Stridebreaker). A great option to consider when you need to keep up to fleeing targets or escape skill shots coming your way. - Gathering Storm is effective for Sett by increasing your overall damage (autos and abilities) against targets every 10 minutes and scales indefinitely. In addition, the rune helps to scale the physical damage dealt by Haymaker, giving you improved grit punches in the lane. |
When deciding on what rune shards (whether offensive or defensive) to pick for Sett in each of your games, you have to factor in a few things in champion selection.
