Introduction

Hello MOBAfire, this is my guide to Taric top. Any comments to improve the guide are accepted with pleasure.
Let's begin. Why would I pick Taric for top lane? He gathers some of the strengths of every top, easily tanky, reasonable early damage, sustain, and CC. He can deal significant amounts of damage to kick your enemies out of the lane and gain advantage if played correctly. He will be tanky if you rush items like Sunfire Aegis, and he will be able to hold damage more than many laners can. His W, Shatter, provides bonus armor and an aura with a percentage of Taric's armor. He will later fall off to a extremely tanky support, so your goals are going to be: Tank objectives, heal teammates and provide auras. But before going on, I have to tell you guys, this is NOT a good pick for a ranked game. You will get flamed if you do so. Taric won't compete with the experienced players on each champion. If you want to have some fun in a normal match, this could be your thing though.

Warning!

First of all, I want to tell you NOT to follow the guide just as it's written. If you like it, use it as a base for your own builds and gameplay. This is my game style, but you should use this to make one of your own.

Summoner spells

Red: not recommended at all.
Yellow: In some cases.
Green: Almost always.

space
Deals damage that you will need to finish up your foes up or provide true damage in fights to give you an advantage. It also counters healing from champions with high sustain that can heal theirselves in a fight.

space
is one of the best spells in the game. It will help you to land stuns on carries, escapes ganks, enter a teamfight for dealing quick damage, it really has tons of uses, and grants far more mobility than ghost

space
This spells is good overall. It closes gaps between your base/random part of the map, and your towers/pushing minions. Also used to go to a team fight, or to the Dragon/Baron pit.

space
is another viable spell, but personally I don't like it. It has less cooldown than Flash, but sometimes ghost can be countered by slows as Nasus's Wither and Flash can be used for skiping walls, things that ghost can't do.

space
Since people know Taric, usually when you are trying to escape or to heal yourself you will encounter a Ignite. Unfortunatly for you, grievous Wound reduce the healing in a 50%, making Heal a unefficient spell for Taric, despite its bonus speed.

space
This adds to you a shield that can counter Ignite, but it isn't worth that. In the late game this barrier will be a tiny tiny amount of your max health (since you will be a tank)

space
Many people take it in champions with no sticking power. But our build already it with provides items like Iceborn Gauntlet or boots with the fury enchantment. You could take it if you want, but it is not recommendable.

Abilities

Gemcraft (passive):
You have to take into account: Using his passive correctly, your cooldowns on abilities are minimal and you can cause a lot of damage with a combo like Dazzle plus a basic attack, or Dazzle+AA+ Shatter. This can actually kick opponents out of lane quickly.
spacespace
Imbue(Q):
Core skill for Taric since his sustain relies on it. If you don't abuse the spell, you should be able to stay almost forever in the lane.
spacespace
Shatter (W):
This is your main damage skill in lane the phase (excluding your ultimate, Radiance), and, as it scales in armor, you should be able to do damage without having any AP items. Sometimes, it's better not to use the skill because when you cast it, an armor aura that you were receiving from the passive will automatically be removed temporarily.
spacespace
Dazzle(E):
This is one of the best stuns in the whole game, since it has range and it's a yes-or-yes stun, you can't miss it. This opens the way to your main combo. You should stun them and then get closer and use your passive, though champions like Gangplank or Nocturne will generally disable the skill. Another way of using the spell is, when you are close to your foe, you use Shatter+AA+ Dazzle to get away safely and make some cheap damage.
spacespace
Radiance (R):
This is your ultimate skill. You shall cast it in a duel for augmenting your stats, just like Singed's ultimate, Insanity Potion, the difference is that this only grants you more AP and AD. This has a lot of base damage, and, plus your items, this will be a great damage source to use in a fight against the enemy laner.

Items

Iceborn Gauntlet
space space
space
The Iceborn Gauntlet is a really useful item. It powers up with Gemcraft to deal lots of damage. It also has Ability power, Armor, Mana, and CDR. A must have on Taric.
space
space
Spirit Visage
space space
space
This item is auto-explanatory. It gives you a bonus in healing (20%), Magic Resist and Health points. If you use Imbue having this object, you will heal yourself a lot.
space
space
Frozen Heart
space space
space
The Frozen Heart is really good item for Taric. Reduces attack speed from enemy carries, and provides tons of armor, CDR, and mana. Great for tanking in teamfights, especially auto-attack dependants.
space
space
Sunfire Cape
space space
space
I would get this first against an AD enemy. Health and armor for low price, apart from a good magic damage bonus that will help you in long fights and to shove and push your lane. Build early in game and if enemy is AD try to rush it.
space
space
Zhonya's Hourglass
space
space
Zhonya's adds armor and AP, things that Taric need for working out his damage.
space
space
Warmog's Armor
space
space
This item is flat Health points. As health is really important now, Warmog's Armor will be a great item. Apart from that, Imbue uses a percentage of Taric's health as a bonus for healing teammates. And if your opponents are going armor penetration, health is the only way to get tanky.

Ohmwrecker

This item is a new good item for a top lane Taric. With CDR, health and armor, it's a great asset for any Taric player.

Combo and Laning

As I read in one comment, he explained that Taric, has no such combo. Well, if you pay attention to this chapter I will explain to you. Most of the enemies in top lane arenĀ“t ranged (except for some cases such as Nidalee or Jayce) so if they want to farm they will have to be in the creep gap between you and the enemy laner. When the enemy gets closer and closer to the farm, you will be able to stun and walk away. But the stun just last 1.4 seconds! Well, that's amazingly enough time to make a simple combo, use Shatter, then AA, then Dazzle your foe and walk away. You have to time this combo, otherwise, the trade could force you to use Imbue, and consequently lose quite a lot of mana.
Don't use this section if
  • Your opponent is ranged ( Nidalee, Jayce, Gnar)
  • You don't feel like it will be beneficial to your lane.
  • If the opponent completely outdamages you.

Matchups

These champions ahead are going to be a headache in lane phase:
space
Almost all ranged champions.
space
space
Irelia : Her true damage ( Hiten Style) will hurt you since your armor won't be useful. Your combo won't work either since she can Bladesurge to you. His passive Ionian Fervor will ignore a great part of your stun. Ask for frequent ganks and hug tower, she's gonna be a pain.
spacespace
Gangplank: He's going to use Remove Scurvy each time you use Dazzle to stun him and land some damage. He will also poke you to death with Parrrley and force you out of lane. With this guy try outsustaining him. Try baiting his Remove Scurvy to burn all of his mana. Since your passive reduces cooldowns in two seconds, they won't be a problem.
spacespace
Pantheon : Although he counters you, you can actually win the lane if you play carefully and safe. His passive ( Aegis Protection) will block your basic attack charged with your passive, but in a long fight you will be able to land more basics since he has to hit you 4 times to load his shield. However, his Aegis of Zeonia will put the passive up again so it will be a difficult lane. His harass with Spear Shot won't hit you hard, but always avoid receiving damage.
spacespace
Master Yi : His Wuju Style passive deals true damage to you, so your armor is useless. He's got a lot of sustain with Meditate. If you can, try to stun him when he uses this spell for reducing his durability in lane. You should be always close to your tower and stun everytime he tried to poke you with his Q (only do so if he casted the spell in a minion in the range of your tower). Try using your Shatter after he casts Alpha Strike and walk away to your tower.
spacespace
Darius : Magic damage (passive, Hemorrhage), he ignores a percentage of your armor and 400 true damage in Noxian Guillotine? He destroys you.
spacespace
Cho'Gath : This will be a hard lane. His passive, Carnivore, grants a lot of durability. Natural tank when stacking and 300 true damage with Feast. Try avoiding his combo Rupture+ Feral Scream and you will be fine, but don't understimate Vorpal Spikes, because this is a really hidden way of damage on Cho'Gath. Play more deffensively after Cho hits 6, because he will just Om-nom-nom you
spacespace
Vi : Her Denting Blows will destroy your armor. Her Vault Breaker will catch up to you if you have used Shatter to walk away after a combo and Relentless Force is a way of harass that you can't tell when is going to be used. Play defensively and watch out for dives.
space

READ PLEASE

In general, all kinds of true damage will make a hard lane for Taric, so watch out for this guys.

Teamfights

Taric's role in teamfights is really simple, stun the adc so he/she can't deal any damage and ult for giving auras to your teammates. Try using your AoE spells in the middle of the teamfight (since you are tanky this shouldn't be a problem). It's really important to pop your ultimate in teamfights, the auras that will give to your team in the heat of battle have tremendous effects. Taric can also heal wounded allies, however, it can be obviously countered by Grievous Wounds caused by Fizz, Katarina, Miss Fortune, Tristana, Varus, Ignite or items like Executioner's Calling or Morellonomicon. If you lost the teamfight and the support is dead/not with you, you can act like one and peel for your Carry. Stun the assasins, mages and opponents with burst damage that threathen your carry and heal your allies as much times as you can. Try to bait them away from your carry if possible.

Conclusion

Taric is a really tanky and he has a great early and mid game. He falls out in late game to a kind of extremely tanky support, but, this doesn't mean you will be unuseful. Taric will provide great advantages to nearby allies in teamfights. His ult will also be useful for taking objectives more quickly. I repeat, please comment and rate so I will be able to update it to improve it! And as english is not my native languaje, please forgive the spelling/grammar mistakes. Thanks for reading my guide and have a nice game!
Also, thanks to Jhoijhoi for lending those banners to me (And to the whole MOBAfire), and to all comments posted in the discussion section. See you on the fields!
