Hi guys,

I am KajiOÌ„kami.
This is my 3rd guide and I am still learning a lot about guide writing.

I made this guide because I think Nautilus is a very good support whit a lot of engaging / playmaking tools.

If you do like my content, feel free to follow me on Twitch, Twitter or YouTube! You can find the links at the top of my guide!

Enjoy the guide and have fun out there on the fields of justice!

If you want to be able to climb the ladder in ranked here are a few pointers in general (counts for every role and every champion). League of Legends is, and will always be, a team game. This means that you will have to rely on others in order to win games. Some games you can carry your team, some games you will be the one getting carried by your team. Just remember: everyone can have a bad game!

Do's

+ Be positive
+ Be a teamplayer
+ Play the vision game
+ Take objectives
+ Play mastered champions
+ Keep your cool
One of the most important parts about being able to win consistently is being positive. If you go into your games with a clear and positive mindset it will not only help you, but also your teammates. Part of playing as a team includes going along with plays your team commits to. Even if you don't 100% agree with the play. By not joining when your team is committed to make the play you just lower the chances of a play succeeding or not!
Another very important key to victory is vision! It's not only the support's job to provide vision. It is a team effort, by buying a Control Ward on every opportunity you have, you will help your team out tremendously! Once you have learned to help your team provide vision, the next step is learning to secure objectives, because they win games. Taking turrets or slaying an elemental dragon can help your team get global gold or increased stats!
Next thing to keep in mind is to play champions you feel comfortable on, don't force yourself into taking the meta pick if you don't know how to play the champion through and through! Knowing everything there is to know about your champion is very important to consistently win lane!
Last but not least: keep your cool! If you are having a bad game, don't start making risky plays or going by yourself. Play safe and rely on your team to help you get back into the game. Same thing goes if your team is playing poorly. Stay calm and don't blame it on them, just keep playing and help them get back into the game.

Don'ts

- Flame
- Be negative
- Afk farm
- Surrender
- Chase kills
- Be a KDA player
Never flame your teammates, because this will cost you the game more often than not.
For example: We've all been there, the enemy jungler seems to have a tent set by your lane and your jungler doesn't visit your lane once. What to do next, flame and blame your jungler? No! Just play safe, don't give away free kills and let your jungler have impact elsewhere on the map. The same goes for being negative, this will just have a bad impact on your teammates. It will affect their play and your chances of winning decrease by a big amount.
If a game isn't going according to plan, don't go sit in a sidelane doing nothing but farm all game. Yes, farming is important, but helping your team and assisting on plays is a lot more important!
Surrendering is also never an option. If you are behind, just stall out the game until your have caught up with the enemy team or at least until the difference in items and gold doesn't matter as much anymore. A lot of games can be won by just playing smart and waiting for your time, even if you are behind.
One more thing to keep in mind: don't chase for kills. Most of the times you keep chasing for a kill you are just wasting your time or worse, getting yourself killed! If an enemy gets away with just a bit of health take this opportunity to take an objective or provide and clear out vision. This will help your team globally a lot more than trying to get that one kill to boost your KDA and risk dying.

In every game you will take Flash and in most games Ignite.
The reason behind taking Ignite is because it gives you a lot of extra pressure in lane. Especially as Nautilus since you will be trying to snowball your ad carry with all the crowd control you provide.

Exhaust can be a very good option if there is a lot of burst on the enemy team. The damage reduction might just be the reason your AD carry survives an all in from a champion like Zed.

Pros

+ Very fun champion
+ Easy to master
+ Provides a lot of cc
+ Tanky
+ Strong peel
+ Great all-in engage

Nautilus is a very fun champion, he isn't too hard to play and his kit is pretty straightforward. He provides a great amount of crowd control with his passive: Staggering Blow, his q: Dredge Line, his e: Riptide and his r: Depth Charge. Nautilus is a tanky champion and his w: Titan's Wrath makes him even tankier. Due to his natural built-in tankiness and his kit filled with crowd control Nautilus is very good at peeling for his ADC and starting an all-in engage.
Cons

- Ability dependant
- No escape after engaging
- Easy to poke
- Provides little sustain for ADC
- Low base movement speed

Nautilus really relies on his abilities to be able to have an impact on the game. Without them there isn't much he can do. When you engage and your team fails to follow up or kill the target, you have no way to escape. You are easily poked out of lane in the early game if you don't find an engage on the enemy botlane. What Nautilus offers in crowd control, he lacks in the sustain he offers for his ADC. The only heal you give is when you have a stack from your Relic Shield. Otherwise there isn't a lot of sustain you offer. Nautilus has a base movement speed of 325, which is very low. This makes it so you feel very slow when walking to lane or when you are roaming.

PASSIVE
Staggering Blow (Passive): Nautilus' basic attacks immobilize his target and deal an additional bonus physical damage. The duration is increased and the cooldown is decreased every 5 levels

Q W E R
Dredge Line Q: Nautilus throws his anchor out. If the anchor hits an enemy champion, Nautilus and the enemy champion are both pulled closer to each other. If Dredge Line hits terrain half the cooldown and mana are refunded.
Fun fact: you can use Dredge Line on nearby terrain to get away from enemies that are chasing you.

Q W E R
Titan's Wrath W: Nautilus gains a shield that scales with his maximum health. Additionally, his next basic attacks deal bonus damage over time while the shield persists.

Q W E R
Riptide E: Nautilus slams the ground, causing 3 explosions around him, each explosion deals magic damage and slows enemies caught in them. A unit can be his by multiple explosions, but take 50% less damage from additional explosions.

Q W E R
Depth Charge R: Nautilus fires a shock wave to a selected target. While travelling to it's target, Depth Charge knocks up every enemy champion it passes, dealing magic damage and stunning them.
Hint: always use Depth Charge on the target that is furthest away from you. This will give Depth Charge the longest travelling distance and increase you chance to knock up multiple enemies.

Depth Charge: your ult is a huge engaging tool with a lot of zoning possibilities and crowd control, so for that reason you will want to put a point in it every chance you get. This means at levels 6 > 11 > 16.

Dredge Line: Dredge Line is your bread and butter to start engages, catch people out or to escape tight situations when necessary, that is why you will maximize this skill first. The amount of crowd control this ability gives you is really important in Nautilus' kit.

Riptide: after you have maxed out Dredge Line, Riptide is next for one simple reason ~ the bonus slow it gives you. The extra damage it provides is also nice, but not the main reason for leveling this skill 2nd. Having a bigger slow makes it easier for you team to follow up on your engages and more difficult for enemies that are caught to escape.

Titan's Wrath: you level up Titan's Wrath last because it doesn't offer you any form of crowd control and as Nautilus support, your crowd control is your most important weapon! The shield you get is nice (and it works well with the next rune Shield Bash), but it doesn't compare to the benefits you get from leveling up your other abilities first.

First things first: because of the new runes system there are now so many different building paths, depending on your playstyle, that it can become hard to choose.

In this chapter I will go over the runes that I think are best on Nautilus.
If you play him with other runes, or if you have some question about different runes, you can always ask and I will be happy to help! :)

Aftershock is by far the best keystone to build on Nautilus because of the huge amount of crowd control that is build into his kit. Which makes it very easy to prock + the increased armor and magic resistance is very useful because you are an engaging champion, which means you will be in the middle of the fights most of the time anyway!

Shield Bash is my favorite new thing this preseason because it's a rune that complements Nautilus so well!
There are various reasons for this:
First of all you get bonus armor and magic resistance every time you use Titan's Wrath. Adding even more value you get out of your shield. This will help you a decent amount when engaging on an enemy champion.
Second is the increased bonus damage you get on your next basic attack against an enemy champion. This also works very nicely with Nautilus passive Staggering Blow, making you deal a surprising amount of damage!
Note: Shield Bash got buffed with the release of patch 9.1. Making it an even better choice to take on our favorite Titan of the Depths.

Bone Plating is by far the best rune to get in this tier because it helps you survive when diving in to the middle of the enemy team. And the longer you survive, the more crowd control you can offer for your team.
During laning phase Bone Plating is also a very useful rune because it helps you with your lane sustain.
Update: patch 9.9 gave a little bit more power to Bone Plating, making it block 30-60 damage based on level (25-50 before).

Overgrowth has received a small rework and because of the it is the final rune I take in Resolve. If fits the job perfectly for Nautilus because of the flat amount of increased maximum health you get. Overgrowth is a rune that will help you a tremendous amount the longer the game goes because you will gain a lot of extra health from it. Making you more durable in late game teamfights.
Update: patch 9.7. buffed Overgrowth, it now gives a 3,5% maximum health increase on completion which is a huge deal as it can really help you!

Ingenious Hunter is a great rune that is underestimated by a lot of players! Especially on Nautilus because you will get multiple active items like Turbo Chemtank and Locket of the Iron Solari.
Having these items up more often can be very useful for engaging / shielding your team during teamfights.

Cheap Shot doesn't need much explanation as to why you should take it.
It makes you deal bonus true damage after using crowd control on an enemy champion. By now we all know that Nautilus has no lack of crowd control in his kit, so this makes it very easy for him to proc Cheap Shot.
Update: patch 9.9 gave a little more punch to Cheap Shot, it now deals 10-45 damage based on level (before 8-40).

This preseason has brought something new and, in my opinion, very useful to the rune-page crafting: the option to pick you own bonus stats. There are 3 tiers, each with 3 options.

Tier 1 ~ Offense
+ 6 AD or 10 AP
+ 9% Attack Speed
+ 1 - 10% CDR (level 1 - 18)
Tier 2 ~ Flex
+ 6 AD or 10 AP
+ 5 armor
+ 6 magic resistance
Tier 3 ~ Defense
+ 15 - 90 HP (level 1 - 18)
+ 5 armor
+ 6 magic resistance

I will tell you my personal view on these stats for Nautilus. These bonus stats should be your pick no matter what the rune page you are going to run is.

Tier 1 ~ Offense: 1 - 10% CDR (level 1 - 18). The reason behind picking the cool-down reduction as a bonus stat is very simple. This way you can easily cap of your CDR without having to go in to Sorcery to take Transcendence in your runes. Which leaves more room for you to take more useful (and effective) runes.

Tier 2 ~ Flex: 5 bonus armor. This is the best way to go as Nautilus support because you will be happy to have the extra armor when trading blows with the enemy AD carry!

Tier 3 ~ Defense: here you will pick the 15 - 90 HP (level 1 - 18) for one simple reason: bonus health is the stat you will be getting the most value out of as Nautilus because it synergises perfectly with your runes and abilities as explained in the previous chapters.

This chapter will be dedicated to the different bottom lane support matchups you can encounter as Nautilus. If you are new to the champion and want to learn how to play him, I really advise you to read this chapter thoroughly. It will teach you when to pick your favorite titan and when to pick a safer champion in your learning period.
Once you have completely mastered the champion, you will learn that there aren't a lot of matchups you can't win if you play it right. Although some matchups will always be more favorable than others!
You can click on the champions listed below to go directly to the matchup you wan to read about. Champions in green are matchup levels 1/10 - 3/10, yellow are matchup levels 4/10 - 7/10 and red are matchup levels 8/10 - 10/10.

Sona | Lux | Bard | Shen | Zilean | Blitzcrank | Leona | Soraka | Thresh
Nami | Pyke | Janna | Rakan | Taric | Braum | Tahm Kench | Zyra
Alistar | Lulu | Brand | Karma | Morgana

1/10
Sona is a very easy matchup for Nautilus once you know how to play him. Sona has a lot of poke in the early stages of the game, but she has to come close to be able to really poke you. The second she oversteps and comes in Dredge Line range, you hook her and she will die 9/10 times.

1/10
Lux is an easy matchup for Nautilus. Yes, she can harass you in lane, but the moment she misses her q and comes too close you can use Dredge Line to catch her and she will have to Flash or you and your ADC will be sending her back to base.

2/10
Bard isn't too hard for Nautilus, you just need to watch out for his stun. Once he used that he is free to hook and kill.
Tip: never blindly follow a Magical Journey!

2/10
In the matchup against Shen, Nautilus should always have the upper hand. If Shen taunts you, your carry is still free to do damage. If he taunts your carry, you have more cc than him to keep your carry safe by engaging on to the enemy carry.

2/10
Zilean is very squishy and his poke is pretty short ranged. Just watch out for his double bombs, Zilean doesn't offer much else to get you low on health. When you engage, fake going on his ADC. When he ults his ADC, turn on Zilean. Or the other way around, depending on the situation. The key in this matchup is baiting out his ult.

3/10
This matchup isn't too hard for Nautilus because you offer more crowd control and are naturally tankier than Blitzcrank. If Blitzcrank grabs you, it's a free stun on his ADC. If he hooks your AD carry, just go straight onto his ADC. In this matchup: try to stand in between Blitzcrank and your AD carry. This will make his life a lot harder because you aren't the target he really wants to grab.

3/10
Leona is a good matchup for Nautilus. She has incredible lockdown, just a Nautilus but she has a lower range on her Zenith Blade than you have on your Dredge Line. You should still watch out for Leona because her gap closer can go through terrain and minions. If Leona engages on your AD carry, turn and immediately go on her AD carry.

3/10
Soraka can be very annoying to lane against with all her healing. In this lane, always focus the Soraka. You'll be wasting time if you try to kill her ADC. When engaging watch out for her silence, because it can really stop you in your tracks.

3/10
Thresh is pretty easy for Nautilus. You have just as much crowd control as him. When Thresh goes on your carry, you should just go straight for his AD carry.

4/10
Nami brings a lot of sustain to the enemy lane + she has a decent amount of poke. Be careful not to get poked out too fast. If you can get on her, try to go all in because like most ranged supports she is very squishy. Nami is also great at disengaging when you try to all in the enemy botlane.

4/10
Pyke can be somewhat of a tougher matchup, in the sense that you need to time your all-ins very precisely. In this matchup it is important to make sure you always keep track of Pyke because he is so good at staying out of vision and engaging on your AD carry. If he engages on your carry, you should go in on his AD carry to make sure he can't deal damage and to zone him off. Keep in mind, that while Pyke has a strong all-in potential, he is very vulnerable once he has used his abilities and he is very squishy! If he makes a wrong move, it is very easy for you as Nautilus to turn on him and get a free kill.
Imporant: Make sure not to stay in lane with too little health post level 6, because of his ultimate Death from Below.

5/10
Janna is really squishy, so if you catch her it's an easy kill. The only problem is that Janna is one of the best champions in the game at disengaging. Her Q: Howling Gale can stop your engages as well as her R: Monsoon. She also offers a lot of sustain in lane because of her E: Eye of the Storm.

5/10
Rakan is a very mobile champion, making it very hard to engage on him. He also offers a lot of engage, just try to stop his engages and then go on his AD carry. Save your Depth Charge for when Rakan tries to engage on you. This way you buy time and get to decide whether you want to continue the fight or not.

5/10
Taric can be a hard lane to get kills once he hits level 6 due to his ult. Try to get kills before Taric has his ult or, when he has it, make sure you and your AD carry focus on the same target so you get the kill before Cosmic Radiance is done channeling.

6/10
Braum is a tricky lane because of his tankiness and the great peel he offers to his AD carry. His passive Concussive Blows can put you in a tight spot after engaging with Dredge Line.
So you will have to do as Nautilus always says:
Quoted:
We await our time!
Wait for your jungler to come for a gank or first bait out his Unbreakable and then start your engage.

6/10
Tahm Kench isn't a fun champion to lane against as Nautilus. If you engage on him you won't get much out of hit due to his Thick Skin. If you engage on his ADC, he'll Devour her and it's over. Advise: make plays elsewhere, but be aware that Tahm Kench can match your roams with his ult Devour.

7/10
Zyra has a lot of poke and she can spawn plants when you want to use Dredge Line, making you miss your biggest engaging tool. Be aware of her all ins post level 6, because she deals a lot of damage. The best way to play this lane is by being safe early and get in some items. If Zyra doesn't get ahead she will fall of very quickly.

8/10
Alistar can be a very hard matchup. If he goes on your carry, you can go on his, but if you engage first, he can knock you back even further with a Pulverize Headbutt combo. This will put you in a dangerous spot. The best thing to do in an Alistar lane is play safe and watch out for his all-ins. You will have to be the one doing the counter engaging.

8/10
Lulu absolutely isn't a fun lane to be in as Nautilus. If you engage with Dredge Line she will Whimsy you, making you a vulnerable and easy target. Lulu also has a decent amount of poke, so watch out that you don't get too low on health just because of that. Her ult Wild Growth and shield Help, Pix! also make it hard to get a kill without a gank.

9/10
Tricky lane if it's a good Brand player. He offers a lot of poke early on. The most important part in this lane is to not stay in lane with a low health bar post 6, because Brand will just use his ult Pyroclasm to finish the kills. If Brand doesn't get ahead early you are good to go once you get a few items. The bright side: Brand is very squishy, so if you can get on to him he dies really fast.

9/10
Karma is a rather hard matchup for Nautilus, she has a lot of early damage with her Mantra Inner Flame and her Inspire gives a decent shield + movement speed bonus. This can make it hard to catch out Karma or her AD carry. Her Focused Resolve can also root you, this can leave you in a bad position after going in with Dredge Line. The best thing to do in a Karma lane is wait until she used her Mantra to empower any of her spells and then go for trades.

10/10
Morgana is the worst matchup for Nautilus and it's easy to explain why: Black Shield. If the Morgana player you are up against knows what he / she is doing, the first spell they'll max will be Black Shield. This will very effectively neutralize almost all your crowd control. If you can bait out her Black Shield on her AD carry or even on herself, you can turn to engage on the one without the shield. Even then you will still have to be careful that she doesn't land her Dark Binding on you, trapping you in place. My advice for a Morgana lane: go gank mid!

In this chapter I will talk more about the itemization on Nautilus support.
There are a lot of good items you can build, each of which I will explain below.

Relic Shield is the best starting item for Nautilus. The primary reason for this is that it provides you with bonus health and some form of sustain with the heal when you consume a stack.
Important: patch 9.23 brought huge changes to support items: you no longer need to buy your upgrades. Once you have collect enough gold, the items will upgrade by themselves. This leaves more room for supports to start buying there more important items a lot faster. Do keep in mind thought, that once your support item is fully upgraded, the bonus gold they provide will fall off.

Since patch 8.15, you can only buy 2 Health Potions at the start of the game, so Refillable Potion is now one of the things you should buy on your first back!

Turbo Chemtank is a must buy item on Nautilus in almost every game. You will always want to buy this as a second item.
The reason for this is very easy: the item active is so good on Nautilus. Using Turbo Chemtank when setting up a play gives you a nice burst of movement speed + it slows the enemy if it procs again when you are near them. On top of that the bonus armor and cooldown reduction are very good.
This item will make it a lot easier for you to catch enemies and set your team up for some easy kills.

Oracle Lens has become available from level 1 since patch 8.8. This means that you can sweep a much lagers area a lot sooner than you used to.
I recommend you switch from Stealth Ward to Oracle Lens after you completed you Relic Shield quest. At that point you will get free wards every time you go back to base so you will not need a Stealth Ward anymore. This allows you to clear out vision, making it harder for the enemy team to know where you, or your teammates, are. Needless to say that doing this greatly increases your chances to get a free kill. Because if they can't see the play your are setting up coming, the chances of catching someone by surprise and getting easy kills become a lot higher.

Mercury's Treads are preferable when the enemy team has a lot of cc. The increased tenacity will help you get out of tough situations just that little bit faster.
Another good situation to go for Mercury's Treads is when the enemy team is very heavily ap focused (ap top + jungle + mid).

Ninja Tabi should be your choice when the enemy team is full ad, just because it will help you so much against full ad comps. The reduced damage from auto attacks and the extra armor will keep you alive a lot longer against full ad comps.

Mobility Boots should be your choice when you get an early lead in lane and you want to roam towards mid a lot, the boost of movement speed will make you lose a lot less time travelling between lanes.

Locket of the Iron Solari is the standard 3rd item choice. It gives you everything you want as Nautilus: bonus armor and magic resistance + a shield to protect your team during teamfights!

Knight's Vow can be another strong choice as a 3rd item. In situations where your AD carry is really far ahead of the enemy AD carry Knight's Vow is the better option to build over Locket of the Iron Solari. By building this item you can support your ad carry so he/she can deal as much damage as possible.

Zeke's Convergence can be build as a 4th item for the same reasons as I just mentioned with Knight's Vow.

Frozen Heart is a strong item to consider building on Nautilus in situations where you need extra armor and want to slow the enemies attack speed, but don't need the reduced damage from critical strikes. The bonus mana and cooldown reduction are very useful for Nautilus because you want you ult to be up as often as possible.
Example of when to build Frozen Heart is when the enemy team has a fed ad carry like Varus or Kog'Maw because they build a lot of attack speed, but not crit items.

Abyssal Mask can be a valid magic resistance option if you have short ranged mages on your team like Ryze or an ap assassin like Katarina and Akali. Because taking Abyssal Mask will increase their damage output, as well as give you some more bonus health, magic resistance and mana.

Warmog's Armor is solid choice for a 5th of 6th item. It gives a big amount of bonus health and due to the passive it will allow you to stay on the map without running low on health.

Randuin's Omen is another great item on Nautilus. The passive gives you 20% reduced damage from critical strikes and slows the attack speed of enemies attacking you. This can be very useful when the enemy ad carry is fed. The bonus health and armor you get are also very good. On top of that the active slow synergises well with Nautilus kit and helps you catch the wanted target.

Adaptive Helm can be a good option for bonus magic resistance if the enemy team has an ap champion on their side that spams abilities, like Cassiopeia or Ryze.

Iceborn Gauntlet is a strong item on Nautilus because of the area of effect crowd control it provides. This item is part of a more aggressive build. The extra slow can really empower your engages and an extra plus side to this item is the increased damage you deal on you basic attacks after using an ability.
Though I suggest you only build this item if you are ahead in the game and don't need the extra tank stats that you would get from Frozen Heart for example.

Sunfire Aegis is an option to build on Nautilus because of the bonus magic damage it deals to nearby enemies. It synergises well with Nautilus play style, because you will be in the middle of the action for the biggest part of the team fights.

Never forget

Vision wins games, never forget that! Buying Control Wards is very important. Also as a support, because you are the biggest provider of vision together with your jungler. A Control Ward can be key in helping you jungler come for a gank without being seen or to take an objective without the enemy team knowing. Always leave room in your inventory for a Control Ward!

These video are a replay of some games I streamed.
They contain, in my opinion, everything you need to know about Nautilus support gameplay.

I will do my best to upload new videos frequently.
