Introduction

Why Gragas

Hello and thanks for reading my guide!

I am KajiOÌ„kami, I have written a couple of guides here before and I wanted to write some more about Gragas support because I found it an interesting pick to talk more deeply about.

Currently there are a lot of pro players picking up Gragas as a support pick.
The main reason for this are the low cooldowns on his abilities if you get him up to 45% cooldown reduction.
Another thing about Gragas is that you can go for a variety of builds on him. I started looking deeper in to this pick and after experimenting with a couple of builds the ones I have described for you guys here are by far the most effective.

I hope you guys enjoy reading the guide as much as I did writing it!

If you do like my content, feel free to follow me on Twitch, Twitter or YouTube! You can find the links at the top of my guide!

Enjoy the guide and have fun out there on the fields of justice!

Climbing in Ranked

Challenger to Bronze V

If you want to be able to climb the ladder in ranked here are a few pointers in general (counts for every role and every champion). League of Legends is, and will always be, a team game. This means that you will have to rely on others in order to win games. Some games you can carry your team, some games you will be the one getting carried by your team. Just remember: everyone can have a bad game!

Do's

+ Be positive
+ Be a teamplayer
+ Play the vision game
+ Take objectives
+ Play mastered champions
+ Keep your cool
One of the most important parts about being able to win consistently is being positive. If you go into your games with a clear and positive mindset it will not only help you, but also your teammates. Part of playing as a team includes going along with plays your team commits to. Even if you don't 100% agree with the play. By not joining when your team is committed to make the play you just lower the chances of a play succeeding or not!
Another very important key to victory is vision! It's not only the support's job to provide vision. It is a team effort, by buying a Control Ward on every opportunity you have, you will help your team out tremendously! Once you have learned to help your team provide vision, the next step is learning to secure objectives, because they win games. Taking turrets or slaying an elemental dragon can help your team get global gold or increased stats!
Next thing to keep in mind is to play champions you feel comfortable on, don't force yourself into taking the meta pick if you don't know how to play the champion through and through! Knowing everything there is to know about your champion is very important to consistently win lane!
Last but not least: keep your cool! If you are having a bad game, don't start making risky plays or going by yourself. Play safe and rely on your team to help you get back into the game. Same thing goes if your team is playing poorly. Stay calm and don't blame it on them, just keep playing and help them get back into the game.

Don'ts

- Flame
- Be negative
- Afk farm
- Surrender
- Chase kills
- Be a KDA player
Never flame your teammates, because this will cost you the game more often than not.
For example: We've all been there, the enemy jungler seems to have a tent set by your lane and your jungler doesn't visit your lane once. What to do next, flame and blame your jungler? No! Just play safe, don't give away free kills and let your jungler have impact elsewhere on the map. The same goes for being negative, this will just have a bad impact on your teammates. It will affect their play and your chances of winning decrease by a big amount.
If a game isn't going according to plan, don't go sit in a sidelane doing nothing but farm all game. Yes, farming is important, but helping your team and assisting on plays is a lot more important!
Surrendering is also never an option. If you are behind, just stall out the game until your have caught up with the enemy team or at least until the difference in items and gold doesn't matter as much anymore. A lot of games can be won by just playing smart and waiting for your time, even if you are behind.
One more thing to keep in mind: don't chase for kills. Most of the times you keep chasing for a kill you are just wasting your time or worse, getting yourself killed! If an enemy gets away with just a bit of health take this opportunity to take an objective or provide and clear out vision. This will help your team globally a lot more than trying to get that one kill to boost your KDA and risk dying.

Summoner Spells

In 90% of your games you will take Flash and Ignite as it is just the best set of spells you can get for Gragas support.
There isn't much else that can be said about it, it doesn't do you much good if you would take anything else than Flash and the Ignite gives you a lot more pressure in lane.

If the enemy team is running a comp with high burst damage, you could go for Exhaust instead of Ignite.
But personally I prefer to always go Ignite as it's more effective at getting you and your AD carry ahead.

Pros / Cons

Pros

+ Fun champion
+ Easy to master
+ Strong crowd control
+ Good engage / disengage
+ Low cooldowns in late game
+ Decent scaling

Gragas is a fun champion, he isn't that hard to play and his kit is pretty straightforward. He provides a great amount of crowd control with his Barrel Roll, his Body Slam and his Explosive Cask, which can be very valuable in teamfights.
His Explosive Cask can be a very big tool for engaging / disengaging, depending on the situation.
Another great thing about playing Gragas support are his low cooldowns once he gets some cdr items and some points in his abilities.
Other than all the above, Gragas also scales pretty decently into the later stages of the game.
Cons

- Mana hungry
- Ability reliant
- Susceptible to poke
- Doesn't provide sustain for ADC
- Long cooldowns in early game

Gragas is a very mana hungry champion, which makes him a little harder to play until you get some mana items or mana regeneration items. So you will have to time your engages pretty well in the early stages of the game. Because without his abilities Gragas doesn't provide much utility.
Gragas doesn't provide a lot of sustain for his ADC other than the procs on Relic Shield if you decide to go for the tank build. So you and your ADC will have to be aware of the enemies poke damage.
Another downside to Gragas in the early game are his long cooldowns. He really needs some items and some levels in his abilities before he can use them a lot.

Runes ~ Tank Build

Runes Reforged

First things first: because of the new runes system there are now so many different building paths, depending on your playstyle, that it can become hard to choose.

In this chapter I will go over the runes that I think are best on Gragas support if you prefer to take the tankier route.

Primary Path ~ Resolve

Aftershock is the best keystone to build on tanky Gragas support in the Resolve tree because of the extra damage it does on proc + the bonus resistances you get when you proc it.
It is also very easy to proc Aftershock on Gragas because of the amount of crowd control you have in your kit.

Font of Life is my preferred rune in this tier, because of the same reason as I gave for picking Aftershock: you have so much build in crowd control in your kit.
The reason I prefer Font of Life over the other runes it that this is the most 'supportive' rune.
Seeing as you are playing support Gragas this is the rune most suited for the job. The bonus amount of healing you can provide to your teammates with all your crowd control can really increase their sustain during teamfights.

Second Wind is by far the best rune to get in this tier because it helps you survive when diving in to the middle of the enemy team. And the longer you survive, the more crowd control you can offer for your team.
This allows your carries to hammer away at the enemy team + the longer you stay in teamfights, the more benefit your teammates will have from Font of Life.

Unflinching is the final rune I take in Resolve. If fits the job perfectly for Gragas because of the increased tenacity you get after using a summoner spell or when your summoner spells are on cooldown.
One of Gragas main engages is his Flash + Body Slam combo, followed by Explosive Cask and you don't want your engage to be stopped by enemy crowd control!
You want to be the one peeling for your team and using your crowd control to lock down the enemy team.
That's the main reason I suggest for taking Unflinching.

Secondary Path ~ Inspiration

Cosmic Insight is the must go-to rune and one of the main reasons people are picking Gragas as a support!
When you max out your CDR at 45% you will have your abilities up so much that you can constantly engage on to the enemy team.
Even more than other supports like Alistar and Rakan.
Apart from giving you 5% CDR at the start of the game and + 5% max CDR, Cosmic Insight also provides a lot of utility because the 5% cooldown reduction also applies to your summoner spells and active items cooldowns.

Biscuit Delivery is the rune you will most likely be picking second because it helps make up a little for one of the biggest issues for Gragas in the early game: his mana sustain. Gragas tends to run out of mana very quickly in the early stages of the game.
That's where the sustain of Biscuit Delivery comes in very nicely as it restores some mana + increases your max mana.

Bonus Stats

This preseason has brought something new and, in my opinion, very useful to the rune-page crafting: the option to pick you own bonus stats. There are 3 tiers, each with 3 options.

Tier 1 ~ Offense
+ 6 AD or 10 AP
+ 9% Attack Speed
+ 1 - 10% CDR (level 1 - 18)
Tier 2 ~ Flex
+ 6 AD or 10 AP
+ 5 armor
+ 6 magic resistance
Tier 3 ~ Defense
+ 15 - 90 HP (level 1 - 18)
+ 5 armor
+ 6 magic resistance

I will tell you my personal view on these stats for Gragas support. These bonus stats should be your pick if you go for the tank rune page.

Tier 1 ~ Offense: 1 - 10% CDR (level 1 - 18). The reason behind picking the bonus CDR as a bonus stat is very simple. The general idea behind this build is getting as much CDR as possible as quickly as possible. So in the spirit of following the idea behind Gragas support you will take this bonus stat.

Tier 2 ~ Flex: +5 armor is my personal preference here if you go for the tank build as Gragas support. The increased armor will help a tremendous amount in the early laning phase against the enemy AD carry.
Note: if the enemy AD carry is a scaling AD carry and the enemy support is an heavy poking AP champion it can be recommended to take the + 6 magic resistance as a bonus stat.

Tier 3 ~ Defense: here you will pick the 15 - 90 HP (level 1 - 18) in most match-ups for one simple reason: bonus health is the stat you will be getting the most value out of as Gragas.

Runes ~ Off-tank Build

Primary Path ~ Domination

With this build you will be going for as much instant burst as possible, so naturaly you should maximize your damage output.
That's where Electrocute comes in. Once you hit level 3 and have a point in all your spells, it becomes very easy to proc your Electrocute for a big chunk of damage on your opponent.
The more damage you deal, the easier it becomes for you ADC to finish off the kill!
Update: patch 8.16 nerfed the damage done by Electrocute by a substantial amount. You will feel this in your burst damage. But the bright side is that the cooldown has been decreased dramatically. The early game cooldown has changed from 50 seconds to 25 seconds and the cooldown at level 18 has been changed from 25 seconds to 20 seconds.
So yes, your burst damage has been brought down, but you can still abuse this lower cooldown to get your opponents low enough to be able to help your ADC get the kill on them anyway!

I don't think that there's much to explain about why you should take Sudden Impact. Bonus lethality and magic penetration after a dash or blink.
Gragas has a dash with his Body Slam, which is on a very short cooldown once you get some levels in it + some cooldown reduction.
This makes it very easy to proc Sudden Impact and get that little bit more damage on the squishy targets that you want to engage on.
So there's no excuse to not take Sudden Impact.

Ghost Poro is your best option in this tier for a very simple reason: you are a support, it is your job to provide vision and you will very often be trying to get some deep vision out for your team. With the reworked Ghost Poro this vision will last longer because when your ward dies it will leave behind a ghost poro that provides vision until it is scared away by an enemy champion.
Spawning a Ghost Poro grants 2 adaptive force up to 10 times (max 20). At 10 Ghost Poro spawns, gain an additional 10 adaptive force.
Update: patch 9.9 helped with stacking Ghost Poro a little faster. It now also gives + 2 adaptive force when a ghost poro spots an enemy.

Ultimate Hunter is really worth considering because your ult can be such an important tool in setting up the plays as Gragas.
A well placed ult can split up the entire enemy team, making it easy for your team to collapse on one target. So naturally, you will want to have your ultimate up as often as possible!
Update: patch 9.9. buffed Ultimate Hunter by increasing the amount of bonus ultimate cool down reduction to 5% (+4% per stack), up to 25% at max stacks. Before it was 5% (+3% per stack, up to 20% at max stacks.

Secondary Path ~ Inspiration

Cosmic Insight is the must go-to rune and one of the main reasons people are picking Gragas as a support!

The general idea behind this build is getting as much CDR as possible as quickly as possible. So in the spirit of following the idea behind Gragas support you will take this bonus stat.

Unique Abilities

PASSIVE
Happy Hour (Passive): Gragas heals for 6% of his maximum health every time he casts an ability (with and 8 second cooldown in between).

Q W E R
Barrel Roll Q: Gragas rolls a cask to the target location, granting sight around it and fermenting over 2 seconds, increasing its damage and slow strength, up to a maximum of 150%.
After 4 seconds or upon reactivation the cask explodes, dealing magic damage to all surrounding enemies, reduced by 30% against minions, and slowing them for 2 seconds.

Q W E R
Drunken Rage W: Gragas reduces incoming damage for 2.5 seconds and channels for 0.75 seconds, while doing so he keeps his ability to move but becomes unable to use abilities or basic attacks for the duration.
Upon completing the channel, Gragas' next basic attack within 5 seconds gains 50 bonus range and deals bonus magic damage to the target and nearby enemies, capped at 300 against monsters.
Extra: on-hit effects are applied by the empowered auto attack!

Q W E R
Body Slam E: Gragas charges forward, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies upon colliding with one as well as knocking them back and stunning them for 1 second.
Body Slam's cooldown is reduced by 3 seconds if an enemy has been hit.

Q W E R
Explosive Cask R: Gragas hurls a cask for to a target location, which explodes on impact, damaging all nearby enemies and knocking them back 900 units from the center of the explosion, while also briefly granting sight of the nearby surroundings.

Reasoning

Explosive Cask: your ult is your biggest tool for setting up plays, whether it's engaging and picking off a member of the enemy team, or saving your teammates out of tough spots.
So for that reason you will want to put a point in it every chance you get. This means at levels 6 > 11 > 16.

Body Slam: as support Gragas your Body Slam is your best source of easy to land cc. This means you will put a point in to Body Slam at level 2, and from then on at levels 5, 7, 8 and 9. This is the most efficient leveling route.

Barrel Roll: after you have maxed out Body Slam, Barrel Roll is next for two simple reasons:
  • First: the % it slows the targets hit is increased. This means you can follow up with a Body Slam even easier. Making your engages even more likely to succeed.
  • Second: the damage increase per level is also a nice bonus.
You will therefor level up Barrel Roll at levels 1, 4, 10, 12 and 13.

Drunken Rage: you level up Drunken Rage for the first time at level 3. After that you will wait until level 14 to start maxing out this skill. Leveling up Drunken Rage after this first point doesn't benefit Gragas nearly as much as leveling up another skill first.

Gragas's Combos

I made these videos to show the strength of the possible combos you can make as Gragas support to have a great impact on the game.
As you can see, most plays revolve around your Explosive Cask and Body Slam as these skills provide you with a lot of possibilities to set up plays.

Items ~ Tank Build

In this chapter I will talk more about the itemization on tank build Gragas support.
There are a lot of good items you can build, each of which I will explain below.

Starting Items

Relic Shield is the best starting item for Gragas if you want to go for the tank build.
The primary reason for this is that it provides you with bonus health and some form of sustain with the heal when you consume a stack.
Update: patch 8.15 changed the cost of Relic Shield from 350g to 400g. This causes you to have to buy 2 Health Potion's instead of Refillable Potion because of the cost. Now you will want to buy a Refillable Potion on your first back if possible.
Important: patch 9.23 brought huge changes to support items: you no longer need to buy your upgrades. Once you have collect enough gold, the items will upgrade by themselves. This leaves more room for supports to start buying there more important items a lot faster. Do keep in mind thought, that once your support item is fully upgraded, the bonus gold they provide will fall off.

Essential Items

Turbo Chemtank is an item that will be included in the tank build on Gragas support almost every game.
You want to buy this as a second item in 90% of your games. In games where the enemy team has a lot of AP damage you will still buy it, but only as a 3rd item, after you have bought a magic resistance item.
The reason for this is very easy: the item active is so good on Gragas. Using Turbo Chemtank when setting up a play gives you a nice burst of movement speed + it slows the enemy if it procs again when you are near them. On top of that the bonus armor and cooldown reduction are very good.
This item will make it a lot easier for you to catch enemies and set your team up for some easy kills.

Oracle Lens has become available from level 1 since patch 8.8. This means that you can sweep a much lagers area a lot sooner than you used to.
I recommend you switch from Stealth Ward to Oracle Lens after you completed you Relic Shield quest. At that point you will get free wards every time you go back to base so you will not need a Stealth Wardanymore. This allows you to clear out vision, making it harder for the enemy team to know where you, or your teammates, are. Needless to say that doing this greatly increases your chances to get a free kill. Because if they can't see the play your are setting up coming, the chances of catching someone by surprise and getting easy kills become a lot higher.

Boots

Mercury's Treads are preferable when the enemy team has a lot of cc. The increased tenacity will help you get out of tough situations just that little bit faster.
Another good situation to go for Mercury's Treads is when the enemy team is very heavily ap focused (ap top + jungle + mid).

Ninja Tabi should be your choice when the enemy team is full ad, just because it will help you so much against full ad comps. The reduced damage from auto attacks and the extra armor will keep you alive a lot longer against full ad comps.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity should be your choice in most of your games when you get an early lead in lane. The reason here is that you will have your abilities up even more, making it easier to make your lead even bigger.

Complementary Items

Abyssal Mask is a solid magic resistance option and can very often be build as a 3rd item. The reason here is that it gives you everything you could ever want as Gragas: bonus health, magic resistance, mana and cooldown reduction.
Taking Abyssal Mask will also increase the damage output of short ranged mages on your team like Ryze or an ap assassin like Katarina and Akali.

Locket of the Iron Solari is a fairly standard 4th item choice. It gives you everything you want as Gragas support: bonus armor and magic resistance + a shield to protect your team during teamfights!

Knight's Vow can be another strong choice as a 4th item. In situations where your AD carry is really far ahead of the enemy AD carry Knight's Vow is the better option to build over Locket of the Iron Solari. By building this item you can support your ad carry so he/she can deal as much damage as possible.

Zeke's Convergence can be build as a 4th item for the same reasons as I just mentioned with Knight's Vow.

Iceborn Gauntlet is a strong item on Gragas because of the area of effect crowd control it provides. This item is part of a slightly more aggressive build. The extra slow can really empower your engages and an extra plus side to this item is the increased damage you deal on you basic attacks after using an ability.
Another big benefit for this item, besides the armor, is the mana and cooldown reduction it gives you!

Warmog's Armor is solid choice for a 5th of 6th item. It gives a big amount of bonus health and due to the passive it will allow you to stay on the map without running low on health.

Randuin's Omen is another great item on Gragas. The passive gives you 20% reduced damage from critical strikes and slows the attack speed of enemies attacking you. This can be very useful when the enemy ad carry is fed. The bonus health and armor you get are also very good.
On top of that the active slow synergises well with Gragas' kit, because you will mostly want to stick close to your targets, and helps you catch the wanted target.

Adaptive Helm can be a good option for bonus magic resistance if the enemy team has an ap champion on their side that spams abilities, like Cassiopeia or Ryze.

Spirit Visage can be another very good option for bonus magic resistance! This item doesn't only increase your magic resistance, but it also provides you with some other very nice stats like bonus health + health regeneration + cooldown reduction.
On top of that it increases the healing you get from your passive.

Gargoyle Stoneplate can be a very good option in really close games where you need something to stay alive longer after engaging. If you find yourself getting popped every time after you engaged, this item is just the thing for you because of it's active. Which increases you survivability by a substantial amount!

Never forget

Vision wins games, never forget that! Buying Control Wards is very important. Also as a support, because you are the biggest provider of vision together with your jungler.
A Control Ward can be key in helping your jungler come for a gank without being seen or to take an objective without the enemy team knowing. Always leave room in your inventory for a Control Ward!

Items ~ Off-Tank Build

In this chapter I will talk more about the itemization on off-tank Gragas support.
There are a lot of good items your can build, each of which I will explain below.

Starting Items

Spellthief's Edge is the best starting item for off-tank Gragas support. The primary reason for this is the increased mana regenaration, the ability power it provides and how easy it is as Gragas to collect the gold with Barrel Roll.
Update: patch 8.15 changed the cost of Relic Shield from 350g to 400g. This causes you to have to buy 2 Health Potion's instead of Refillable Potion because of the cost. Now you will want to buy a Refillable Potion on your first back if possible.

Essential Items

Remnant of the Watchers is important since it allows you to carry up to 4 wards with you. This is crucial in providing vision for your team and a big part of your job as a support.

Shurelya's Battlesong is an item that will be included in the off-tank build on Gragas support almost every game.
You want to buy this as a second item in every one of your games.
The reason for this is very easy: the item active is so good on Gragas. Using Shurelya's Battlesong when setting up a play gives you a nice burst of movement speed!
On top of that the bonus health + health regeneration + mana regeneration + movement speed + cooldown reduction are very good.
This item will make it a lot easier for you to catch enemies and set your team up for some easy kills.

Oracle Lens has become available from level 1 since patch 8.8. This means that you can sweep your brushes a lot sooner than you used to, setting up for your jungler to gank in advance.
I recommend you switch from Stealth Ward to Oracle Lens as soon as your support quest is completed and you get your free wards on each back.
This will allow you to use Crowstorm from out of vision every time it is of cooldown. Needless to say that doing this greatly increases your chances to get a free kill.

For the most part, the items you want to finish with are similar to the ones I explained before in the tank build. There are just 2 exceptions that I quickly want to go over here:

Twin Shadows is back: talk about a blast from the past! The more experienced league player will remember the spooky ghosts well enough.
When an why should you take it on Gragas support?
If you get an early game lead and want to snowball your lane or the other lanes, this item can be very effective. You use the active as you walk into the lane, slowing the enemy champions and making them easy targets for your Body Slam and Explosive Cask.

Banshee's Veil can be a very good item on Gragas when there are a lot of ap threats on the enemy team, or when they have a lot of cc. The magic resistance and spell shield you get from Banshee's Veil can make the difference between getting a kill or being killed in there kinds of situations.
Bonus: aside from giving you a spell shield and tank stats, Banshee's Veil also give you cooldown reduction and bonus ability power, which makes your abilities pack a bigger punch!

Tank or Off-Tank?

In this chapter I will give the reasoning as to when you should go for the tank build and when you should go for the off-tank build.

Tank Gragas

The tank build is the one you will be building in 90% of your games, because this is the build you take when your team doesn't have more than 1 other tank on the team.
This is the case in most games, because in solo queue most players like to play carry champions!
So if there are no other tanks on your team, or only a tanky toplaner / jungler, the tank build is definitely the way to go with Gragas support.

Off-Tank Gragas

The off-tank build is the one you should go for in those games where there are already 2 tanks on your team and your team can use the extra damage.
Example: you have a Rammus jungle and a Maokai top. In this case I really suggest you go for the off-tank build on Gragas because your team will benefit more from a little extra damage seeing as your tanks will already be doing there job of forming a very strong front line.

Gragas support ~ Full Gameplay

Stream Replay

These video are a replay of some games I streamed.
They contain, in my opinion, everything you need to know about Gragas support gameplay.

I will be uploading new videos with different matchups frequently.

Special Thanks!
