Shaco - The Jungling Juggalo

Shaco is a very fun champion and my favorite jungler. He excels at ganking even at level 3 and can jungle pretty fast. He is quite squishy for a melee DPS champion and can take time to master.

Some of my ideas came from Reginald so if you want to see his build the link is here:

Abilities

> > >

I prioritize Jack in the Box over his other abilities because it helps him jungle fastest and in my opinion his best ability. Sure raising Two-Shiv Poison gives you more damage, but a longer fear can ruin a champions escape or chances of survival. Two-Shiv is next for the damage and Deceive last.

Backstab (Passive) - Shaco deals 20% extra damage when attacking the targets back. This passive helps for jungling while your JitB has the aggro.

Deceive (Q) - Shaco blinks to target location and becomes stealthed for 3.5 seconds. While stealthed, Shaco's next attack will crit for bonus damage. This ability lets Shaco gank with ease, but occasionally the enemy will see the smoke particle from your blink which will ruin your gank. Deceive is also good for escaping and chasing.

Jack in the Box (W) - Shaco creates a Jack in the Box (JitB) that will stealth after 2 seconds. The JitB will stay for 90 seconds and activate when an enemy comes near it fearing the target and attacking the target. Shaco's main ability for jungling as it damages the monsters and gets the aggro so Shaco doesn't get hurt.

Placing a nest of JitBs in a bush can allow for an easy and unsuspected gank. Also using them as wards allows for good map control and defense while attacking Dragon or Barron. Use them on key choke points and lane entrances while pushing lanes to see enemies before they can gank you.

Two-Shiv Poison (E) - Shaco passively slows targets with his auto-attacks while reducing minion hit chances. When activated, Shaco throws a dagger dealing damage and slowing the target. The passive is not effect while on cooldown. Two-Shiv is a great finisher and the blind allows you to jungle easier when the monsters are attacking you.

Hallucinate (R) - Shaco creates an illusion of himself nearby, which deals 25% less damage and receives 50% extra damage. This illusion deals half damage to towers and inhibitors. On death, the illusion explodes, dealing damage to nearby enemies. The clone lasts for 18 seconds.

Upon activation of Hallucinate, Shaco can dodge abilities with proper timing. The clone does not have items or neutral monster buffs so finding the real Shaco is not very difficult.

Summoner Spells

I choose Smite and Ghost

Smite is necessary for jungling and I play Shaco as a jungler.

Ghost is great for chasing, escaping, and especially good for ganking which as Shaco you will need to do.

Other good choices are Flash and Exhaust

Flash is always good for escaping and chasing, but Shaco has a built in Flash (Deceive).

Exhaust is always good for 1v1's and preventing escapes.

Masteries and Runes

I go 21/0/9 for the improved damage and penetrations in the Offensive Tree and the improved Ghost, experience, and neutral monster buff durations in the Utility Tree.

Armor pen marks for increased damage output and faster jungling.
Flat armor for easier jungling and all-around defense. (Can be replaced with attack speed seals)
Flat cooldown glyphs because cooldown is always good. (Can be replaced)
Armor pen quints for increased damage and fatster jungling.

Item Build

+ x5

Like most junglers, start with Cloth Armor and 5 Health Potions.

On your next buy, you will want to buy Madred's Razors for faster jungling and Boots of Speed if you have enough money.

Now finish your Wriggle's Lantern for the ward and even faster jungling. The faster you jungle, the faster you get to ganking therfore making you better for your team.

Buy Berserker's Greaves for more attack speed for more damage output.

The new Cloak and Dagger is a great replacement for Mercury's Treads and Phantom Dancer. It is much cheaper allowing you to build an Infinity Edge faster.

Now to get some damage, Infinity Edge will give you amazing damage on your crits and basic attacks.

or or

Now to get a defensive item. Banshee's is my recommended, but in the case the enemy lacks magic damage, a Sunfire Cape will give you some nice health with some armor. Guardian Angel is another good choice although I would prefer some health.

or

Next get a Black Cleaver or a Last Whisper. If the enemy team does not build effective armor, a Black Cleaver will help shred their weak armor allowing you to hit them even harder. In the case the enemy builds good armor, a Last Whisper will provide the armor penetration to still deal good damage to them.

Once You Finish Build

After you finish your build, you can replace your weaker items if the game lasts longer.

->

I get Berserker's Greaves for the early game attack speed making me deal more damage. Once you have solid attack speed, you can replace them with Mercury's Treads for better tenacity.

->

Once you have Mercury's Treads, the Cloak and Dagger's tenacity becomes useless. Switching it out for a Phantom Dancer will provide more attack speed, more crit chance, and some bonus movement speed.

->

Although I sometimes prefer not to, replacing your Wriggle's with another lifesteal item like a Bloodthirster will further increase your damage output and in the case of a Bloodthirster give you more lifesteal. The one drawback is the loss of the ward from the Wriggle's.

Other Items

Damage

Madred's Bloodrazor is a great item for Shaco as it gives everything a growing Shaco needs, attack speed, attack damage, and a great passive for countering health-stacking enemies. This item is not core because I find it is too expensive and could be replaced by better items.

Trinity Force is a good replacement for a Phantom Dancer as it provides slightly weaker stats than a PD but also provides other stats and a Sheen proc to increase the damage dealt by Deceive.

Black Cleaver is a great attack speed and attack damage item like Madred's Bloodrazor. It also provides an armor-shredding passive for pesky armor-stacking enemies trying to counter you.

Stark's Fervor is a great lifesteal item although I prefer a Bloodthirster after selling my Wriggle's Lantern.

Hextech Gunblade is another good item to replace your Wriggle's with because it provides good stats and makes your JitB and Shiv better at the same time.

Sword of the Divine is good when facing dodging opponents such as Jax. Besides fighting Jax, I do not recommend this item.

Sword of the Occult is a very situational item. Only buy a SotO if you are completely raping the enemy team without fear of death.

Defense

Guardian Angel gives basic defense needs and the all famous second-wind passive allowing you to Deceive after resuscitation.

Frozen Mallet is a good item if you are doing well and do not need a heavy defense item. Although I would still prefer a GA or BV over this, it can help for survivability. The slow is pretty useless as you have Two-Shiv and red buff for slowing.

Hexdrinker is a good choice when facing Karthus to help counter his ultimate.

Quicksilver Sash is a good counter for Malzahar or Warwick suppression, but it can also be used to counter champions like Mordekaiser or Ashe who would target you with their ultimate. QSS can also be a good choice for a cheap defensive item if you feel you are doing well enough to skip a GA or BV.

Sunfire Cape is still a good item for melee champions even if your clone does not have the passive. Gives good health and great armor if you are facing a physical DPS team.

Wriggles versus Bloodrazor

I have had a few comments asking why I get Wriggles over Bloodrazor. Well hopefully this section will help everyone understand.

Wriggle's Lantern is almost half the cost of a Bloodrazor while giving great stats. Sure it gives more damage while giving attack speed and is a better item than Wriggle's, but I do not base my build around Bloodrazor and attack speed but prefer to build around criting the enemy therefore needing less attacks. Wriggle's allows me to get an early lifesteal item that helps immensely with jungling and allows me jungle with ease. While you are getting your Bloodrazor, I will already have Wriggle's and at least a Brutalizer therefore dealing more damage.

I feel Bloodrazor is better on champions like Kog'Maw, Tristana, and Warwick who can get off more auto-attacks. Shaco needs more damage per auto attack because he doesn't get as much off, and that is also why I build one attack speed item, Phantom Dancer.

Pros: cheap, great stats for price, free wards, very fast jungling, easy lifesteal mixed with passive.
Cons: Doesn't give too much damage, loses some effectiveness late game.

Pros: Great damage item, gives attack speed, passive for life-stacking opponents.
Cons: Very expensive, delays other items, slower jungling (besides Dragon/Barron).

Jungle Path 1 (Blue Start)

Thanks to Ippytraxx for his great jungle video.

Here's the breakdown

Golem, wolves, wraiths, Lizard, golems.

Start by buying and 5 .

Run to Golem and place 3 JitBs so they only fear the golem. Afterwards place 2 JitBs on the mushroom near the wolves, where they do not attack the wolves.

Attack the Golem and place a JitB behind it to fear it when you other JitBs die. Pop a health pot when it stars attacking you, and Smite it when it gets low, kill the little lizards and move on to the wolves.

Get Two-Shiv and attack the big wolf. Place a JitB behind it and continue to kill them using Two-Shiv and JitB when they are off CD.

Place a JitB behind the big wraith and start attacking it. Pop a health pot and finish the camp.

Smite should be back up. Place 2 JitBs near the Lizard and have one ready. Attack the Lizard draw it to your JitBs and place one behind it. Pop a health pot and Smite when it gets low, finish the camp, and move on to the golems.

Place a JitB behind one and start attacking it. Pop a health pot and kill them using JitB and Two-Shiv whenever.

Jungle Path 2 (Red Start)

Note: This path is more difficult and requires runes and masteries. If you are low level and want to jungle as Shaco use the other path.

Here's the breakdown

Golems, Lizard, wraiths, Golem, wolves.

Start by buying and 5 .

Place 2 JitB near the golems then 3 near the Lizard. Smite the big wraith and go to the golems.

Attack one and pull to your JitBs then place one behind them. Focus the one your boxes are attacking and don't forget to pop a health pot. Finish the camp and move on to the Lizard.

Attack the Lizard and pull it to your JitBs. Place one behind it and attack. Pop a health pot. With this path you cannot spam Two-Shiv because of mana issues. Finish the camp and move on to the 3 remaining wraiths.

Put a JitB between them and kill them then go straight to Golem.

Place a JitB behind it and attack using a health pot if needed. Smite when it gets low and go to wolves.

JitB behind the wolves and focus the big wolf.

This video shows how to jungle on the purple side. Thanks to fapfapover9000 for the great jungle video.

Ganking

Once you have Lizard buff, ganking is a breeze. Deceive in hit them, Two-Shiv and kill your target. Make sure your allies know you are there to help because you can still die.

With the second jungle path, ganking can start as soon as level 3 so always be on the look out for ganking opportunities.

Note: Deceive's smoke particle is occasionally visible and can ruin the element of surprise causing your opponents to instantly flee so be wary of that.

Dragon

At about level 6, 7 or 8 (depending on if you are high summoner level and have runes and masteries), Shaco can solo the Dragon with Smite, Hallucinate, Wriggle's, and a health potion.

Make sure to aggro the Dragon with your clone and attack it from the back. Popping your health pot when it aggros to you. Using JitB and Deceive will also pull the aggro off of you for a sec or two.
