[10.22] In-Depth Tristana Build and Gameplay Guide

By thelolbeast
PROS

+ Long rate late game
+ Powerful mid-game and insane late game
+ Safe in teamfights
+ Burst early game
+ Easy to play

Tristana has a decent mid game and insane late game. This is mainly because she gets a lot of damage with her items and she has a very long range and 2 abilities to keep her safe, Rocket Jump and Buster Shot. She is one of the easiest ADC's to play and can easily carry games when played correctly.
CONS

- Short range early game
- Has difficult match-ups
- Can be difficult to come back if behind
- Squishy
- Requires good positioning in teamfights.

Tristana's biggest weakness is her weak early game, mainly because she has very short range and can get bullied quite hard. In order to carry teamfights you are going to need good positioning, but all in all the pros definitely outweigh the cons, so Tristana is a pretty safe pick to pick up and play.

Press the Attack

Press the Attack is the best keystone for Tristana at the moment. It gives you a lot of burst damage, especially when using your Explosive Charge. It also helps you melt down enemies in teamfights. Another possibility is Lethal Tempo, however most of the ADC players agree that Press the Attack is better, but you can feel free to try Lethal Tempo aswell.

Triumph

Triumph is the best option here. It will probably come in clutch multiple times, each game. It restores 12% of your missing health per takedown, this bonus can easily add up in teamfights and save your life letting you dish out more damage.

Legend: Bloodline

You can either go for Legend: Alacrity or Legend: Bloodline, so you can get attack speed or lifesteal, the reason we go for lifesteal is because we build a lot of attack speed early but don't get any lifesteal until our 5th item. If you would rather have extra attack speed, then go for Legend: Alacrity.

Coup de Grace

The reason we go for Coup de Grace is because it is the most consistent out of the 3. It will probably provide you with the most damage almost every game. However, if you are facing a very tanky team and you know you will constantly be attacking tanks, Cut Down might be a better option.

Nimbus Cloak

Nimbus Cloak provides you with some extra survivability in all stages of the game. It is very useful since every time you use a summoner you can probably use some extra movement speed aswell.

Gathering Storm

Since Tristana strives in the late game the extra AD from Gathering Storm definitely adds a lot of damage. The longer the game goes the more AD you get which is perfect.

Flash + Heal

Pretty self explanatory, just like every ADC you take Flash and Heal because there are the best options that help you survive in teamfights and carry them. You could also possibly choose Barrier if your supports decides to take Heal.

Doran's Blade

Doran's Blade is the best starting item for most ADC's because it is the best item you can for 500g. It gives you AD, lifesteal and health, which is very useful because Tristana has a pretty weak laning phase so the health can come in very handy. You can also buy Doran's Shield if you are in a difficult match-up, like Caitlyn for example.

Infinity Edge

Infinity Edge is a super good item on Tristana. It provides you with insane stats aswell as a great passive, especially with the items we will be building later.

Berserker's Greaves

Most of Tristana's damage comes from her auto attacks, so the more she can throw out, the better. That's why attack speed is one of your most important stats. Sometimes you could get Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads when you need extra defensive stats. But most of the time you should get Berserker's Greaves

Stormrazor

The new changes to Stormrazor in patch 9.23 made it a viable item for lots of ADC's and especially Tristana. The energized effect let's you deal lots of damage on your first auto attack and gives you the extra slow to finish your opponents off.

Rapid Firecannon

After Infinity Edge and Stormrazor you should be looking to get Rapid Firecannon. It synergizes great with Stormrazor, because now we get extra range on the slow. At this point Tristana has a lot of damage.

Statikk Shiv

With Statikk Shivwe will get 100% crit and our energized attack will have an AoE effect. If you need more survivability you can get Phantom Dancer or Guardian Angel, and if you are facing tanks or too much healing you can get Lord Dominik's Regards or Mortal Reminder.

Bloodthirster

With 100% crit and lots of damage in my build I like to end things up with a bit of survivability, most often with Bloodthirster. You should always get Mercurial Scimitar instead of Bloodthirster if you are facing high CC teams. You can also swap this item for Guardian Angel or Last Whisper.

Draw a Bead

The range of Tristana's basic attacks, Explosive Charge and Buster Shot is increased by 0 − 136 (based on level) for a total of 525 − 661 (based on level) range.

Usage

Pretty simple, yet very powerful passive. Tristana's range is increased as she levels up. This is why she has a weak early, decent mid and insane late game. Make sure to play passively in the early game and use your passive to its fullest in the late game.

Rapid Fire

Tristana gains bonus attack speed for 7 seconds.

Usage

Another very simple ability. Extra attack speed for 7 seconds. Ideally use this when damaging an enemy champion, whether it is trading or teamfighting. Otherwise you can use it to take down objectives very quickly, or to even push waves. Use it every time you can use some extra attack speed.

Rocket Jump

Tristana dashes to the target location, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies on impact and slowing them by 60%. On enemy champion takedowns or upon detonating Explosive Charge at maximum stacks on an enemy champion, Rocket Jump's cooldown is reset.

Usage

This is Tristana's main mobility ability and can be used for offensively and defensively. Most of the time you will be using it defensively to save your life or to reposition, but as you get more expirienced with Tristana you will start using it offensively aswell. You can become an assassin with this ability, using you high burst to jump in and nuke a target, then easily escaping using the cooldown reset.

Explosive Charge

PASSIVE: Enemies explode when slain by Tristana's basic attacks, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies. ACTIVE: Tristana places an explosive charge on the target enemy or enemy turret. After 4 seconds the charge explodes, dealing physical damage to nearby enemies. The explosion radius is increased when used on a turret. Tristana's basic attacks and abilities against the target increase Explosive Charge's damage by 30%, stacking up to 4 times for a maximum 120% increase, upon which the charge also detonates instantly.

Usage

Another great damage ability. A great way to use this in teamfights is to use it on the tank, then stack it up and send the tank back to his team with Buster Shot and having the AoE splash their entire team. Also, remember to use this when sieging down turrets because it helps a lot.

Buster Shot

Tristana fires a massive cannonball at the target enemy, dealing magic damage and knocking back the target and all enemies around them.

Usage

You should mainly use this to knock back enemies that are trying to kill you, however, there are a few more uses. You can use this to combo with Explosive Charge, which I already explained. A fun way of using this, which I wouldn't recommend for beginners is the Insec. Use Rocket Jump behind your opponent and knock them back to your team/turret with Buster Shot.

Laning Phase

The main thing you need to remember is that Tristana, as I mentioned multiple times in this guide, has a very weak laning phase. This means that most of the time, no matter what you do, you will still lose lane. Just try to lose as little as possible. Play safe and give up some cs and exp, this is way better than dying, if you die you will lose way more and you will also give your enemy a big lead.

The main objectives in the laning phase are to get as much CS as possible, maybe kill the enemy if they let you and to get the enemy tower as fast as you can.

At the very beginning of the laning phase, you should try to hit level 2 first and your power spike effectively. If you don't have to help your jungler make sure you start pushing as soon as the minions get into lane.

If you hit level 2 first, you should try to all-in your opponent by jumping on them with Rocket Jump and using Explosive Charge, then auto attacking them to get extra damage on Explosive Charge aswell as to proc Press the Attack. If you don't hit level 2 first, you should do the opposite and just fall back. Don't let the enemies to the same thing to you.

After this you should try to freeze the minion wave just outside of tower range. This does 2 things: it puts you in a good and your enemies in a bad position. Since you are close to your tower, they can't all-in you so you get free cs, and you also can't get ganked, unless they are willing to dive you. It also makes them overextend which puts them at risk from getting all-ined from you. Even tho Tristana has a weak early game, she can still all-in opponents pretty effectively because of her insane burst. If your support can land some CC you can jump in and destroy your enemy. Most of the players usually don't expect this so you also have the elemtn of suprise.

For the rest of the laning phase, you should keep your main goals in mind, to get as much CS as you can, maybe some kills and to get the enemy turret down as soon you can. Always, always remember to stay safe, because, an early death can lose you the entire game. Don't be afraid to give up some gold and experience, you will still be a beast once you get your items.

Out of Lane

Now that laning phase is over, you should be looking to win the game. The only way you win is by destroying the enemy nexus, so every action you take should be towards destroying the enemy nexus. This is why you should focus on objectives. Towers, dragons, rift herald, and baron, you should try to get as many of these as you can. As the game progresses, you will get stronger and stronger, so don't underestimate the power that Tristana has. Also, you should be trying to get picks on mispositioned enemies aswell. Catch side waves to keep up the CS and play with your team to get as many objectives as you can. Remember, Tristana is always a beast when it comes to taking objectives.

Teamfighting

The most important thing to remember in teamfights is POSITIONING. You should be staying in the far back, behind your frontline and near your support. You should be focusing the highgest priority target near you, usually a bruiser or an assassin. Use your abilities to melt his health bar. Start off by using your Explosive Charge and Rapid Fire, procing your Press the Attack and then you can use your Buster Shot to blast him back to his team to deliver the Explosive Charge. Use your Rocket Jump to stay away from divers, because, you can't deal any damage if you are dead.

If you kill their frontline and your frontline is still alive, you can Rocket Jump in and destroy the rest of the enemy team with ease.

If you facing a lot of CC, you should get Mercurial Scimitar in order to survive. Don't be afraid to sacrifice some of your damage to get defensive stats.
