Dont fight him in early, he can easily kite you and outrade you during early, dont let him take a lead, take Dorans shield, farm safely, you will be able to outrade him on lvl 6. Go conqueror, all in lvl 6.

Hi guys,

I'm a Alzeidx, EUW Garen main and streamer,Ive reached Diamond 4 in my first season, after 3 years long break from League.
I am OTP Garen with 100k mastery points on him. I made this guide because I think a lot of people underestimate Garen on high elo or play him incorrectly, because of lack information or knowledge against certain matchups.

I believe it is one of the strongest top laners at the moment, if played correctly, he can basically win anyone, that could be the reason he is getting constantly banned in ranked, he is very strong as adc at pro play level, as well as in any ranked game basically.

Garen is efficient on all elos, especially in lower elos,starting from iron and up to diamond/master. I will do my best to help you get better at playing Garen and climb ladder fast and easy.

Position - Top or Mid
Ganking Synergy - Low
Speciality - Mobility, Tankiness, Mid Game carry, split pushing.

Generally, Garen might be one of the easiest champs in current meta, he is still very relevant and is regarded as one of the strongest mid/late top laners. It is still quite hard to play high on him level. while you peak in mid and late game. it takes a lot of practice and patience to be useful throughout the game.

Once you master him, it will be more than enough to hit at least Plat just by playing Garen on top.

1. During teamfights, try to land your Q Decisive Strike silence on the enemy team’s main damage dealer to instantly shut them out of the fight.

2.During the early-game, focus on harassing your lane opponent with Decisive Strike and weave in a few auto attacks when they have been silenced.

3. Your Passive ability Perseverance allows you to be incredibly aggressive in the early-game, so try to constantly harass and poke your lane opponent as much as possible.

4. Play safe early as Garen is quite weak before level 4.

5. In Mid/Late Game, always try to do combo Flash Q Decisive Strike E Judgment R Demacian Justice adc or mid laner, that will greatly benefit your team.

6. Rush Trinity Force for lane dominance and Roaming opportunities.

7. Outsustain your enemy top laner by trading and regenerating your hp from your passive ability Perseverance

8. Your Ultimate ability R Demacian Justice Does True Damage, so dont be afraid to Execute some tanks.

9. Dont forget that your Q Decisive Strike silences your enemy, so they cant Flash, use it to your full advantage, especially with Flash combos.

10. Your Q Decisive Strike will work on Towers, that gives you ability to Splitpush efficient or get Tower Plates fast.

Perseverance: Garen Heal power restores 1.5% − 10.1% (based on level) of his maximum health every 5 second

If Perseverance is interrupted for 7 seconds if Garen takes damage from epic Monster icon monsters, Turret icon turrets, or Champion icon champions, or if he is hit by an enemy ability.

Basically, that is your sustain, when you are low, just chill somewhere until your HP regenerates back, very useful for laning phase, it will make you outlast your enemy.

ACTIVE: Garen removes all slow effects from himself and gains 30% bonus movement speed for a few seconds.

MOVEMENT SPEED DURATION: 1.5 / 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5
Additionally, Garen's next basic attack within 4.5 seconds lunges him towards the target, dealing Attack damage bonus physical damage and silence the enemy target for 1.5 seconds.
BONUS PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+ 40% AD)
Decisive Strike resets Garen's basic attack timer.

I know it is quite sad, but its your one and only CC ability that you have, but it also silences and deals decent amount of damage, very useful stuff.

PASSIVE: Garen permanently gains Armor icon 0.25 bonus armor and Magic resistance icon 0.25 bonus magic resistance every time he kills an enemy, up to a maximum of 30 bonus resistances at 120 unit kills.

ACTIVE: Garen reduces incoming damage by 30% for a few seconds. For the first 0.75 seconds, Garen is additionally Hybrid resistances icon shielded for 10% of his maximum health and gains 60% Tenacity icon tenacity.

This is the reason, why he is considered tanky, without this ability he would be nothing, very strong defensive ability that is also reducing CC on him by giving him Tenacity boost. Especially useful ability if used at the right moment, moment of peak damage on Garen.

ACTIVE: Garen rapidly Channeling iconspins his sword around his body 7 − ∞ (based on bonus attack speed) times over 3 seconds, dealing physical damage with each spin to nearby enemies. Judgment can critically strike.

PHYSICAL DAMAGE PER SPIN: 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 20 (+ 0 − 8.2 (based on level)) (+ 32 / 34 / 36 / 38 / 40% AD)

The nearest enemy is dealt 25% bonus damage per spin. Enemy champions hit 6 times have their Armor penetration icon armor reduced by 25% for 6 seconds. Hits after the 6th refresh the duration of the debuff.

In short, it scales from Attack Speed and it is your main source of damage, spin to win guys, DEMACIAAAAAAAAA

ACTIVE: Garen gains True Sight icon true sight of the target champion for 1 second, dealing them Hybrid penetration true damage after a 0.5 second delay.

TRUE DAMAGE: 150 / 300 / 450 (+ 20 / 25 / 30% of target's missing health)

One of the Best Ultimate Abilities in The Game. Good Demacian Justice can not only win teamfight, it can win a Game. nothing to add. This is Game Changer.

Basically, Garen does not have many Combos, but there is still few of them.

1.Poke Combo - Auto Attack Q Decisive Strike
2. Trade Combo - Auto Attack Q Decisive Strike E Judgment Auto Attack
3. All In Combo - Auto Attack Q Decisive Strike E JudgmentR Demacian Justice Ignite

Without a doubt, Conqueror is the best option for Garen, pretty much against anyone,nothing else can be considered, it stacks from his E Judgment and deals tons of damage. I would not recommend to consider anything else besides this rune.

It is very efficient rune, for all kinds of scenarios, tower diving, dueling on your lane and teamfights of course. Not only it restores significant amount of health but it also gives you the gold (cash money bro).

You gain 3% attack speed plus an additional 1.5% for every Legend stack (max 10 stacks). It is very useful rune if you build aggressive Garen and want to optimize maximal damage output,go for it,if you are like me and you want to focus on hard carry role in your games or you can go for a safer option Legend: Tenacity, as it will allow you to tank more and survive through CCs.

This rune allows you to deal more damage to the enemies that are less than 40% health, as Garen can easily spin someone to 40% in no time, it is the perfect option for all stages of the game.

Since after recent nerf of Judgment, Garen became quite weak early game.
Thats why this rune is especially good for lane sustain in early laning phase, you want to have some extra defense for hard matchups and early trades, believe it is one of the best options.

This rune will earn you lots of money from Platings in early, as well as it will be very good if you splitpush in mid/late game, personally I always use this rune, as I outrade my oponnent in laning phase and he recalls back to base, I always get 1 or 2 plates, which is 160-320g and that is huge advantage.
P.S. Even at pro play, this rune is very popular.

This is your core item, it gives you, extra mobility(Movement speed) and your Burst damage of course, as well as Attack Speed for your main source of damage Judgment.

Second and very important item, it buffs your E Judgment (attack speed + crit) very significantly, as well as gives you extra tankiness by item's passive shield.

Very strong offensive item, but I also consider it defensive, as the healing from it can be very high (especially if you use your E Judgment on 2 or more enemies).

Strong defensive item which also gives you Extra Mobility (Movement Speed)and buffed 1st Attack(Works on your Q Decisive Strike) as well.

This is really important Late Game item, not only it gives you damage and extra tankiness against AD champions, it also gives you extra life, considering its cheap value, it is a must have item.

This is really good item vs AP damage, not only it gives you extra tankiness and magic resistance, it also increases all healing by 20% and that includes your Perseverance.

As Garen is quite weak in early game, especially after recent nerf of E Judgment. I would recommend farming safely, at least until you reach level 4.

After it you will have opportunity for early trades, as you have decent amount of sustation from your Perseverance, you will be able to outlast your enemy.

You will have a great kill potential when you reach level 6 and you will have a huge potential for lance dominance when you buy Phage and Stinger.

Garen is very Strong in Mid-Game, once you get Trinity Force and Phantom Dancer, you should be roaming and teamfighting as much as you can, you have a huge fighting potential, stick with your team, get objectives (herald,towers,drakes,nashor).
Just make sure someone engages first before you go or it will be really hard for you to reach someone, as Garen is CC'd and kited easily.

As Late Game starts, you need to have some tanky items (even Garen can die very fast), if your team is too weak for 5vs5, consider idea of splitpushing, Garen is very decent at it.

If your team is strong enough, you should stick with them and focus back line,priority is adc and mid laners, whoever is reachable and easy to kill(even supp.
One good E Judgment can not only make you a Pentakill, but also win a Game.
