[10.22] PH45's Guide To Irelia, The Blade Dancer!

By PH45
Hello, I'm PH45, and this is my Irelia Guide.

My real name is Patrik, but you can call me either way. I am a long time League of Legends player (started back in Season 1). I'm a top lane main, and I enjoy bruisers (Mainly Jax). I've been Diamond since Season 7.

My OP.GG for anyone interested

List of my accounts I mainly play on right now(EUNE)

I also got multiple other accounts but right now I mainly play on my main.

Check out my YouTube channel where I occasionally post League related videos!

I might occasionally stream some games, you can find me here on Twitch.tv!

Flash: Best summoner spell in the game. Has the capability of getting over walls or quickly getting in range with for Bladesurge

Teleport: The cooldown was nerfed to 6 minutes so it can be a bit harsh to take tp now but I think it's still the best choice for second summoner on Irelia. Most of the time it enables you to splitpush and teleport to teamfights if you aren't near the fight when it breaks out. It can also help you in tough matchups where you have to back a lot early but main focus with Teleport is to have map pressure instead of getting back to lane to catch that one wave.

Conqueror

From the keystones we take Conqueror since it grants 1.7-4.2 adaptive damage every hit with an autoattack or damaging ability up to a max stack of 12. Both autos and abilities grant 2 stacks so it stacks quite quickly on a champion like Irelia At max stacks it also gives you 15% post-migitation healing of your damage, so it works well with Irelia's playstyle and kit. Note that the healing will be worse the tankier your opponents are, but better the squishier they are. s

Triumph

Other options don't do much for Irelia and overall Triumph just works well for a lot of champions so it's an great choice. Allows you to survive in teamfights thanks to the healing it gives.

Legend: Alacrity

Irelia scales well with attack speed so choosing Legend: Alacrity should be no surprise. I think Legend: Tenacity is very useful though since there is so much CC in the game nowadays.

Coup De Grace

Coup de Grace is by a good choice out of the bunch, if you snowball you'll constantly be able to high dps and get the rune to do extra damage, but imo Last Stand is really valuable as well for clutch fights.

Inspiration

Magical Footwear

Time Warp Tonic

Magical Footwear is a nice rune to take since you can sink gold into other things early, and also the small extra amount of movement speed will help you to catch up and stick to people.

Time Warp Tonic is a great tool for laning as it offers some instant sustain from potions, but maybe the biggest part is the movement speed and the damage you get from it while the potion is active. It really helps you to stick on targets and do some extra damage during trades and all-ins.

With the new stats I feel the best choice is to take the attack speed one since Irelia likes extra attack speed. The other 2 are dependent on opposing teams but most of the time you should be fine running Adaptive Force + Armor.

  • Ionian Fervor (Passive): Irelia gains 1 Ionian Fervor stack for every enemy champion hit by her abilities, or if she hits at least one non-champion, stacking up to 5 times. Her basic attacks deal extra damage and at max stacks she also gains extra attack speed and more damage.

  • Bladesurge (Q): Irelia's bread and butter. Irelia will dash to the chosen enemy target, dealing damage and granting a stack of Ionian Fervor, healing herself a bit and it also deals flat bonus damage to minions. It gives her a ton of mobility, especially around minions and in teamfights if she can mark a ton of people with her abilities.

  • Defiant Dance (W): This ability is mostly used to deny a burst of damage as it offers damage reduction from physical damage but locks you down while you are channeling. You can use it to cs from range and also to ''avoid'' cc since this ability can't be interrupted. Then again you are already locked in place thanks to the cast.

  • Flawless Duet (E): This is the ability that makes Irelia annoying to deal with as well. It's essentially an AoE stun, which allows her to get multiple Bladesurge targets and resets which grant her mobility and a ton of burst damage. In teamfights try to lock down a target with this but also keeping in mind to try and hit multiple targets for better efficiency.

  • Vanguard's Edge (R): Great ability for engaging, as it slows anyone that passes through the blades by 90%, leaving them as an easy target to dash onto. This ability also marks all enemies struck, giving you a ton of Bladesurge resets.
Titanic Hydra, the god of wave clearing
This item is extremely efficient for Irelia. It gives waveclear, HP and an auto reset.
Trinity force, never skipperino
Most important item on her build. Sheen proc will deal a lot of damage after jumping on someone with Bladesurge, attack speed is nice, some CDR and also Phage passive and stats are welcome.

Blade of the ruined king, % health damage is good
This item is a considerable choice if the opposing team has multiple tanky champs, or if your lane opponent is hard to stick with and you need some sustain as well (like Singed). This item's on-hit damage got buffed to 12% of current hp as physical damage which is quite noticeable, although this item still remains situational since armor stacking still makes this item less valuable.
Spirit Visage, healing improver
This item works extremely well with Death's Dance and Irelias Bladesurge as the healing factor gets stronger. It is also good against AP poke lanes since the repice item Spectre's Cowl grants you more regeneration after you have been damaged by enemy champion. It also gives nice amount of MR.
Randuin's Omen, death to ADC's
The build path got updated again and now it's again a sensible way to build it. I usually pick up Warden's Mail first and then build it onwards from there. Helps extremely well in auto-attack oriented matchups and later on it's slowing effect is nice in teamfights and it also slows enemies attack speed when they hit you so it lessens the enemy DPS.
Ninja tabi
Good for autoattack reliant matchups and also vs fed ADC's etc. Most of the time I go these boots unless the enemy comp has heavy CC which can be an issue. Late game it isn't as noticeable but it's still quite good.
Mercury's treads, the option for CC
Pretty self-explanatory, get this if the enemy laner or the whole enemy comp has a lot of CC as it can shut you down pretty well.
Guardian Angel, Aatrox passive for everyone
The item got a slight change, now builds out of a B. F. Sword and a Cloth Armor. If you have extra gold in late game and this items passive is down sell it and switch it for something else as the pure stats aren't worthwhile the wait.

Thornmail, the way to cripple an AD comp
This item seems to be really good in some cases now. If the opposing team has lot's of healing champions or just a fed AD champ with lifesteal this is the perfect item.
Thornmail now applies Grievous wound which helps killing those pesky healing champs much easier. Also it get's the cold steel passive which is nice.
Death's dance, bleed it out
Death's Dance heals for 15% of ALL damage dealt. The DoT bleed passive is also nice which allows you to have more time in fights healing up, essentially it acts like a damage reduction. They also added resistances on it now, so you get 30 armor and magic resist, which are both nice stats to have on Irelia.

Sterak's Gage, Tenacity and shields
Sterak's Gage is a good fit for most bruisers. It gives a shield and +30% tenacity, which is really helpful in teamfights. Great item to pickup after having some other items with HP like Trinity Force and Titanic Hydra.

With Irelia you are looking to most of the time take Bladesurge at level 1. Defiant Dance is an option if you are afraid of getting CC'd at level 1, tanking the damage while CC'd with your damage reduction since the ability can't be interrupted. Flawless Duet is also fine since you can use it to stun your opponent in a minion wave, auto them and back off.

Once you attain your ultimate you can look to kill your opponent since you have the chance to have 2 resets on your Bladesurge. Be sure to get your Ionian Fervor stacked up before fighting so you'll have maximum DPS for the fight.
While your opponent is inside Vanguard's Edge save your Flawless Duet, since it offers you a way to deny them an escape after your ult area times out.

As mid/late game arrives, you are still looking to most of the time stay on a sidelane, since Irelia is a strong splitpusher. Tiamat proc combined with your Bladesurge you'll clear creepwaves really quickly and push the lane fast, thus creating pressure whichever lane you push.
You can do teamfighting also since Irelias ultimate is a great AoE ability that allows you to get multiple resets for your Bladesurge, while also disarming enemies that pass through your ult area, possibly winning you a fight if you hit multiple targets with it.
