Introduction: Who Am I?

What's up everyone! My name is WillieP, and I'm a challenger Udyr one trick on NA. I peaked at Challenger 430 LP in Season 8, and am currently hovering (d1/grandmasters). Additionally, I have a YouTube video for my Ultimate Guide to Udyr:

I also have a Twitch where I'll be grinding daily. Hopefully you'll get a grip on the best champion in league by reading this guide- I'll try to cover everything about Udyr, but considering I have over 7,000 games of Udyr and 4,000,000 mastery points I won't be able to cover everything. I'm not going to talk too much about pathing, as this will vary on a game to game basis. Instead, I want to focus on the mindset you have when playing Udyr, and how to take over the early game.

Summoner Spells

Flash is essential, never run Ghost unless you're trolling. Arguably, Udyr's biggest weakness is that he is kiteable- Flash allows you to gain a gap closer every 5 minutes. But Willie, wouldn't Ghost help more with the kiting? More movement speed wont help you at all, if they have a team that is well equipped for you. Always take Flash boys

Runes/Build Path

PTA is the king of season 9. Best rune in slot by far, but for some other options you can choose conqueror and lethal tempo. These two runes are decent vs melee teams, but I generally just stick with Press the Attack. Phase Rush and Aftershock are very weak in my opinion, so I wouldn't mess around too much with these runes. Conqueror is really strong in tankier builds, and synergizes well with steraks gage. Especially at higher elos, conqueror is an excellent choice if you need to be a frontline.

Playstyle

If you guys get nothing else out of this guide, make sure to pay very close attention to this section. By far, the most important part of Udyr (tiger Udyr at least) is the mindset you have when you go into a game. You are no longer a jungler, nor a member of your team. You are a selfish player looking to repeatedly kill the enemy jungler, tax your laners, and take/steal enough gold to transform into the Godyr. This means that early game, you HAVE to get ahead, otherwise you are going to be useless late game. I always joke on my stream about Udyr being a "ticking time-bomb"- if you don't have a kill by ten minutes, you most likely are going to lose the game. This can be stressful at times, but once you learn Udyr's playstyle you'll soon find out how easy it is to generate an early lead with him. Below platinum, NO ONE wards, so you can just abuse over extended lanes to get ahead. Once you start reaching somewhat high elo (although tbh I don't think high elo starts until Diamond 1), the easiest way to generate a lead is by invading the enemy jungler. At level 2, Udyr can duel anyone, with a few exceptions. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO INVADE. In fact, you should almost always invade the enemy jungler to at least find out which camps they have/have not done. If you're stuck in Diamond, focus on tracking the enemy jungler and constantly being on the side of the map that he's on- counterganks are the easiest way to snowball a game. In summary, **** the enemies and **** your teammates; you are here to generate gold (at any expense) to build your expensive core items.

Early Game

Early game is by far the most important part of playing Udyr, so if you're losing games on him I strongly recommend going back into your replays and figuring out where you made your first mistake. I recommend doing red buff ---> gank, or blue gromp wolves red ---> gank. Vertical jungling is especially good at lower elos, as it allows you to lock down one side of the map. I made a video on vertical jungling, so if you struggle with this concept give it a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16VTd5KVfb4 . Another huge deal with season 9 is krugs - try to farm krugs on respawn if there are no gank opportunities. Krugs are worth more than your wolves/gromp combines, so spam the respawn cycle on a loop.

Mid Game

Get warrior enchant asap. After you have your warrior, look to flash kill an enemy laner and take first tower. Then, secure the neutral objectives (drag + rift herald), and start moving your vision into the enemy jungle. Take every enemy jungle camp that you can; this will begin a long process of starving the enemy team of resources (enemy jungler inst getting camps, so he goes to tax laners, then laners dont get farm, etc). Beyond this, just look to get picks and continue to take towers. As a side note, the above information is under the assumption that you won the early game. If you didn't win the early game, figure out why and focus on improving that :)

Late Game

If you made it to late game, you failed. Your goal as Udyr is to end the game before 25 minutes. However, every game can't be this way, so if you find yourself at this point in the game you have 1 of 2 options: Split Push or Teamfight. If your team is really weak or you have gotten outscaled, run it down a sidelane. I get a lot of flack from high elo players about how all I do is split push- I wouldn't be the rank I am if I didn't understand that Udyr sucks *** at team fighting. Udyr can 1v1 ANYONE late game right now, and can certainly outrun them with deadman's and phase rush. Jax, Fiora, Vayne- Udyr beats them all right now. Obviously, there is outplay potential/summoner spell cooldowns, but on even ground Udyr can duel anyone. Fair warning though, Udyr sucks against most kiting champs (Kennen, Gnar, etc). However, just by keeping these champs in a side lane, you're doing your job- Kennen/Gnar will certainly do more damage/cc in a teamfight than Udyr. Try your hardest to out-macro and out-rotate the enemy team, as the NA region as a whole sucks *** at macro. I will be making a guide on my Youtube channel shortly on how to split push properly, so stay tuned! As mentioned above, Udyr sucks *** at teamfgihting. If you chose to go with the teamfight route instead of the split push route, either peel your adc or dive the enemy adc, depending on how fed you are/how bad the positioning of the enemy carry is. To avoid these awkward teamfights, try and force early barons, as they can end the game on the spot. If you're ahead, or if you have a mountain drake, Udyr can solo baron very easily. Try to let your team know this, so you can try to sneak a baron in.

How to Play Udyr From Behind

So you took my advice, invaded the enemy jungler, and ended up dying. What now? Well, you have one of two options: 1) Continue to be aggressive, or 2) Farm like a little b1tch. The first option is fine for low elo- the enemies will make a lot of mistakes, so you can try and "sneak" your way back into the game. At high elo, your enemies will not be as forgiving. I recommend skipping warrior enchant and going cinderhulk; this will allow you to be a great front line presence for your team, yet still have enough damage to burst a squishy target. The only problem with this build is you have 0 split push potential and 0 dive potential- you are going to have to try and play around your team. But since you are behind, teamfighting is the best option since you won't be able to split push effectively anyway.

Summary

Obviously, there's a lot of stuff about Udyr I didn't cover- I could type my college thesis on Udyr if I had to. If you ever have any questions, hop over to my Twitch and feel free to ask me there. Basically, invade early ---> get kills on laner ----> solo objectives ----> get an early baron ----> end game. This season is incredibly snowbally, which is a perfect environment for Udyr to thrive in. Best of luck climbing, may the tiger flow through you (cheesy enough lul?)
