Hello! I am Xiralid a Challenger tier LoL player who mains Cho'Gath.

My intention here on Mobafire is to make informative guides for the players who needs them and not spam making guides just for advertising my medias etc.
I started playing LoL around october in Season 7 which i was Silver 5 once i completed my placements.
As a new player i wanted to play some cool looking champion so i was scrolling through the collection tab and as soon as i saw Cho'Gath i didnt hesitate to buy him :).

I played him alot and didnt want to play anyone else.
Of course when i reached gold i started to play champs like Yorick,Karthus,Kayn,Azir and Kled but Cho'Gath was my pocket pick.

Well here we 2 and a half years later and i went from Silver 5 hardstuck to Challenger by playing Cho'Gath 80%+ of the time.

With my knowledge of Cho'Gath my ambition is to pass on what i have learnt and be able to stream when i play and have a healthy growing community :D

NOTE I have never watched and used another content creators Cho'Gath guides for my beneficial in my ranked career.

Why ? because you need to learn the following from your own experience
1 Why/When is Cho'Gath strong ?
2 Why/When is Cho'Gath weak ?
3 Why am i loosing lane/game ?
4 if i am loosing what have i done thats negatively impacting my team ?
5 Are theese runes on Cho'Gath i took from a different content creator besides from Xiralid really working just as good as the creator claims them to be ?
6 If i went another rune would my matchup/teamfighting be any better ?
7 When should i farm/fight?
8 When should i Group with my team?
9 Should i engage or peel for my carries in a teamfight ?
10 Is this match good with Cho'Gath ?

This way you are putting yourself 1 step ahead of your opponents and allowing yourself to adapt to a certain playstyle for the specific game ur in and also will increase how fast you climb the Ranked ladder i can assure you!

How to play Full Tank ChoGath



As Tank Cho (Armor OR Magic resist) you want to be able to cc the enemy as much as possible by making their most valuable carries useless in your presence.

If you max Q as tank cho then you are wasting skill points as it doesn't increase the cc time when u hit ur Q and your Q scales with AP which you are not going to use in a full tank ChoGath build so the damage is basicly untouched even if you max it first as tank Cho which do not encourage you to do!



by maxing E you are maximizing the damage output you do as tank ChoGath in the laning phase which allows you to do valuable trades and then eventually kill the enemy no matter who it is and then get even more tanky and a bigger threat to the carries.

Since you max E on ChoGath you should be maxing W second. Why ? Because the ability itself is very usefull for example if ur against

Fiora or Mordekaiser since mordekaiser can use his W shield or R to prevent

u from maximizing your R damage output and the same is with fiora. Fiora can use her"Parry" ability which is the ability that prevents her from being CCED or damaged for a short period of time and the last thing you would want Fiora to do is "Parry" your R on her so max W 2nd to increase the Silence duration.

As Hybdrid Cho'Gath your goal is to be able to poke your laner to around 600-700 hp and then going all in on him to secure the kill and increase your damage and tankynies.
This is probably the best choice for new Cho'Gath players since with this build you are hard to kill and deal alot of damage.

Full Ap ChoGath Build (Electrocute)

This build should only be played by ChoGath players who can hit an entire combo without making a mistake/missing Q as this build is far more rewarding than any other BUT also very punishing if you fail to successfully 1v1 your lane oponent and give him a lead.

If u get a lead then dont hesitate to uppgrade your dark seal to Mejai's Soulstealer for extra 1 shot potential in the early-mid game when you are not full build and can sell it for another ap item if you die and loose all your stacks.


Glacial ChoGath

Not as punishing if you fall behind as with Electrocute but can be tough to play with if every lane is loosing and your team doesnt scale

(NEW!) Bruiser shredder Cho'Gath

This build is VERY good against top lane Bruisers like Darius.
The backstory of this build is that Hail of blades Cho was requested for me to do from my Twitch chat when i was against Darius which many consider to be one of Chos biggest counters.

Turns out i managed to win my lane very easily with hail of blades vs Darius so i decided to test different rune combinations with Hail of blades on Cho and this is the final result which i am very pleased with and so excited to share with the rest of you!

Anyway so now i will explain how the runes benefit Cho.

Hail Of Blades since you max E in this build making your E cooldown VERY low with HIGH damage. you can often start a fight with your enemy by acting like you overextend or making a mistake which they surelt will react on and want to try to get a chunk of ur health bar down but thats when you press E and use your 3 hail of blades attacks combined with your E ability so shred his/her health bar and once you have used your Hail of blades then keep chasing and land a Q and then a W when hes about to land so he cant use anything and then you will have your E back up and decide if u wanna kill him with R or E :D

Cheap shot because of extra damage with your bacis abilitys

Eyeball collection so that you can scale with ap for every takedown but still be super tanky.

Relentless hunter because Cho is immobile and needs the extra ms and will help alot when running towards your oponents with Righteous glory :D

Biscuit Delivery

Because you have even better lane sustain and when u eat a cookie you get more permanent mana and restore some health

Time ward tonic The corrupting potion will be very usefull in lane when you trade as you can instantly restore alot of hp with your Corrupting potion.





Runes Against Full Ad

In what matchup is this a good rune page? Against champions who needs to scale before they can destroy such as Fiora,Jayce and Sett.

With theese runes you want to be focusing on getting as much armor as possible to maximize the bonus armor you will get at the 10th min from the conditioning rune (if you choose that rune instead of bone plating)

Use your E to proc your Grasp (Grasp Of The Undying) since your E gives you increased attack range for 3 aa (auto attacks). Why dont just use aftershock ? Becuase Grasp deals damage and heals you when you proc it on the enemy AND it also increases your hp by 5 for each time you proc it so by procing it as many times as possible will increase your R and E damage since they both have scalings with your max hp.

Demolish to 1 shot Towers when pushing with your team

Bone plating to be able to trade (fight) even better in lane EARLY GAME ( that being said if you are 100% sure you dont need bone plating to survive early game then go for the rune "Conditioning") Bone plating will also make you receive less damage when you for example wanna go up to their face and proc your grasp :D

Overgrowth because your R and E scales with max hp which overgrowth gives you!

Precision

Coup De Grace You deal even more damage to low hp enemies when you proc your grasp and eventually wont need to even have your R ready since when you finish "Thornail" you will be able to basicly stand still and auto attack and spam E to force them to recall or udnerestimate your Power and die.

Legend: Tenacity Makes sure nobody can perma cc you long enough to keep their carries safe from you.

Runes Against Full Ap


Same applies here, stack mr for your bonus mr at the 10th min from Conditioning if you use that rune.

Use your E to proc your Grasp (Grasp Of The Undying) since your E gives you increased attack range for 3 aa (auto attacks). Why dont just use aftershock ? Transcendence Because an enemy team with full ap will most likely have ALOT of ranged champions with cc so this rune will help with setting up AND perma Cc-ing enemies so the rest of your team can sweep in and secure the kills :)

Full Ap ChoGath Runes(Electrocute)


Electrocute because you can easily outtrade your oponent very fast and kill them thanks to the burst with this keystone.
Cheap Shot because it deals True damage when u cc someone with Q or E so you can proc this rune 2-3 times per combo.
Eyeball Collection because you get even stronger with ap when you kill someone with this rune.
Relentless Hunter because ChoGath lacks mobility which you need in this meta so this will compensate and also allow you to later on in the game sell your boots for an item like Spellbinder or Warmogs

Absolute Focus to be able to deal as much damage as possible.
Gathering Storm To scale very good and carry your team when you 1 shot the enemy team.


Hybrid ChoGath Build
Arcane Comet to poke safely while still doing damage
Manaflow Band If you hit a Q it costs 45 instead of 60 since you get 25 mana per spell you hit.
Transcendence 10% CDR
Gathering Storm to scale and have damage

Demolish to 1 shot towers later with your team when sieging and for geting plates easier early game

Overgrowth gives you HP that scales with your R,E and demolish.

Glacial ChoGath


This is the most notable ChoGath runeset for ChoGath as of Patch 10.4 and has been meta for quite a while now.

Glacial Augment The only reason we are using this rune is because it grants Hextech-glp 800,Twin shadows and righteous glory gigantic slows you produce to make sure the enemies cant escape you or ur team.

Perfect timing: Becayse if you have a bad matchup and have theese runes you just want to try to survive untill you have Glp 800 or/and twin shadows since thats when you become usefull with this build. It doesnt really matter what you pick instead of Perfect Timing because it will have a change in 10.4 thats going to affect it negatively with the time you can activate it increased from 10 min to 14 min

Futures Market So that we can afford our items as fast as possible since they are quite cheap compared to ludens echo and other ap items.

Cosmic Insight Because it grants CDR to your core items (Hextech glp-800.Twin Shadows and Righteous Glory) so you can spam them even more

Ingenious Hunter because eventually when you have stacked this rune 5/5 you can use your hextech glp every 25th second and twin shadows somewhere near that and that is really huge since it allows you to put more preasure on the enemy team. You are basicly saying stay away or die.

Cheap Shot Because it helps in lane to trade and when your glacial procs with an item or with aa cheap shot will also proc when u attack.

Full Ap Chogath (1 Shot Poke)

This build is my favorite since it allows you to easily poke and trade with your oponent and even if you manage to get low on hp you have ur passive so u will heal right back up and then can continue poking since u have alot of mana when u have rod of ages and decent ammount before that with manaflow band.

Absolute focus and gathering storm allows you to scale really good, you could pick scorch but it doesnt allow you to 1 shot just as fast later on in the game only early, but it still works late game.

Cheap shot and eyeball colection cuz u get kills easier and easier for each kill u get allowing you to 1 shot anyone even if you get a small lead.

Cho'Gaths gameplay should be adapted to what the laner ur against. For example if ur against a melee champ you max E and if ur against a ranged champ max Q since you probably wont be able to walk up to them and use ur E alot.

A combo every Cho'Gath player should know is Q,aa,E and W

Hitting someone with Q allows you to punish them since they cant do anything while knocked up so if you auto attack and then imideatly after use your E to auto attack again you will maximize the damage output and also apply another slow making them forced to flash BUT after you have used your E thats when you want to use your W which silences them and makes sure they cant use any summoner spells or abilitys (except for Tryndamere and Olaf R)

A combo to 1 shot when playing Ap ChoGath in lane when you have hextech revolver is Q,aa,E,W,R (ignite aswell :) )

Combos later on in the game is simply Q,W,E,R since your ap will be so high your Q will deal atleast 1/3-1/2 of their hp and then using your W and E will get your target(s) low enough for you to R or let ur teammates clean up the kills.

PASSIVE:Carnivore

Whenever Cho'Gath kills any minion,monster and champion or destroys an enemy structure such as yorick ghouls,zyra plants etc he restores Health 20 − 71 (based on level) health and Mana 3.5 − 7.75 (based on level) mana.

Q Rupture
TARGET RANGE: 950
CAST TIME: 0.5
COST: 60 mana
COOLDOWN: 7


Cho'Gath gains sight of the target area which, after a 0.625 seconds delay, he ruptures dealing magic damage and knocking up enemies hit for 1 second and slowing them by 60% for 1.5 seconds afterwards.

Scaling
Magic damage:
80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+ 100% AP)


W Feral Scream
TARGET RANGE: 650
COST: 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 mana
COOLDOWN: 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 / 9

Cho'Gath roars in the target direction, dealing magic damage to enemies in a cone and silencing them for a duration (1.6 / 1.7 / 1.8 / 1.9 / 2)

Cho'Gaths W can cancel abilities that are being channeled such as Karthus R, Jhin R,Xerath Q and R and many many more.

Magic damage:
75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+ 70% AP)
Silence:
1.6 / 1.7 / 1.8 / 1.9 / 2




E TARGET RANGE: 500
CAST TIME: 0 sec
COST: 30 mana
COOLDOWN: 8 / 7 / 6 / 5 / 4


Cho'Gath's next 3 basic attacks within 6 seconds have 50 bonus range and launch a volley of spikes in a line, dealing magic damage and applying a decaying slow over the next 1.5 seconds to enemies hit.

This ability resets Cho'Gath AA(Auto attack) timer allowing you to deal slihgtly more damaged if timed correctly!

Magic Damage:»
22 / 34 / 46 / 58 / 70 (+ 30% AP) (+ 3% (+ 0.5% per Feast Feast stack) of target's maximum health)

Slow per level:
30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50%








R
TARGET RANGE: 175
COST: 100 mana
COOLDOWN: 80



Active: Cho'Gath attempts to eat the enemy target,dealing Hybrid penetration true damage ( a mix between to factors of damage in this case its ap and max hp).

Against non-champions, the base damage is increased to 1000 (the damage still scales on non champions).


True Damage to Champions:
300 / 475 / 650 (+ 50% AP) (+ 10% bonus health)

If Feast(R)kills its target, Cho'Gath gains a Feast stack. Only 6 stacks can be gained from non-epic monsters or minions.


Each stack grants bonus health as well as attack range and increased champion model size for a maximum 75 bonus attack range.

Bonus Health Per Stack:
80 / 120 / 160 bonus health

Bonus Attack Range Per Stack:
4.5 / 6 / 7.5

Why not use "Ultimate hunter" ?

Well the ultimate hunter is on the domination tree and that tree is more rewarding when u need damage which Cho tank shouldnt have. If ur going cho tank ur supposed to be a huge menacing unstopable monster that can barely be cced even tho the enemy is spamming cc on you and thats why u need the precision tree as secondary with legend tenacity
and besides even if i went ap cho and had the domination tree i wouldnt take ultimate hunter as it needs it only rewarding when u kill evereyone in the enemy team once so u can get the stacks which in laning phase will be completely useless so thats why Ravenous Hunter is a way better option since ur passive heals and the ravenous hunter also heals with % of the dmaage u do with abilitys so when u spam spells on minion waves with ap cho u get basicly 3/4 of health bar back if ur low around 200 hp (yes im serious) when u have 1 item
and if theres another rune i would use for domination tree than ravenous hunter its Relentless hunter as Cho is immobile and thoose stacks will help him out to easier reach your target (out of combat) and rotate to places faster on the map. Also very fast when ur chaisng someone thats just running and not bothering to attack u to cancell the relentless hunter ms but even if someone does that u have protobelt to dash and instantly Q to make as much impact of the protobelt dash as possible



2 why thornmail first item?



Well simply because Thornmail gives 80 armor and 250 hp. The armor itself is the thing you want from the thornmail since Cho will get hp from his R stacks anyway so the 250+ hp from it is a bonus. The passive is
UNIQUE Passive: Thorns: Upon being hit by a basic attack, reflects magic damage equal to 25 + 10% of your bonus Armor, inflicting Grievous Wounds on the attacker" Since
Since frozen heart is 2nd item thats +110 armor
and you have tabis aswell
so when the ad enemies attack you
they are going to take alot of damage tryign to burst you
which they cant
ive had this build vs a Fiora which alot of people think counters cho
i can just tell u that as soon as i got my thornmail she couldnt 1v1 at all
i was standing still using my maxed E to kill her alongside with my R and thornmail passive
So Thornmail helps you to fight and makes u tanky and tankier and stronger with armor items
Randuins gives 70 armor and 400 health which is totally fine but theres not rly a reason u would need it that early in the game when theres better options for winning ur lane
note how i put righteous glory as 3rd item
thats becuase its around that time the teamfights will start
and if u have gotten 3+ kills (and farmed well) u will have it even before baron spawns
and Righteous is a good teamfighting item but not super good in laning phase since it only gives u 30 armor and 400 hp
thjats even less hp than randuins BUT it gives u mana and cdr but we are not playing ap cho in that game so the mana is not needed in lane
so thats why its bought later
Im not good at Math but if u have Thornmail and Ninja tabis your armor will be around 160 at lvl 7
and the Thornmail passive is "reflects magic damage equal to 25 + 10% of your bonus Armor"
10% of 160 is 16
so 25+16
Every time someone aa you at lvl 7 ( Thats basicly in ur laning phase) They will take 41 magic damage per auto attack
and for the cherry on top they get affected by Grievous wounds
so if for example ur laning against a Tryndamere
he cant heal from his Q
when he is auto attacking u
and when he has auto attacked u 3 times ( that happens kinda fast with his attack speed" he will have taken over 120 magic damage (Maybe 80 magic damage depends on his Mr runes and build)
and since we know that Cho tank is not a bruiser ment to win 1v1
with the Thornmail you will easily outtrade your ad oponents
all u have to do to win lane is play it slow, let them push you in since you outscale them. If they push you in then you are the one with the upper hand
and also since we are maxing E for tank cho it only costs 30 mana
and that is the abilty you should try to only use except when you fight because thats when u should use ur Q and W
and when i mean fight i mean a fight that you start because u know u can kill him
not a fight he forces on you
you can most likely just drop 1 E auto attack on him and then he cant chase you
or just drop a Q instead since it gives 60% ms slow for 1.5 seconds
but it costs 60 mana
so E is better for the mana economy but Q is safer if u think hes gonna kill you
