Masteries
This is my guide to soloing mid with Amumu. You have to understand how and when to use Amumu's skills in order for this build to work, but once you do, there is no stopping you and you can get kills almost every time your ult is up.
Let me start by saying that the runes/masteries are just the ones that I use. They are completely changeable. The summoner spells that I use are very helpful to my style of play and I will be using them in this guide, but are also subjective.
Start off with tantrum, this of course is your main skill because it reduces damage and makes farming terribly easy. You should be able to roll up to the creeps and either last hit with auto attack or use tantrum and last hit. PLEASE DO NOT AUTO ATTACK CREEPS IN MID OR YOU WILL FAIL MISERABLY. You have to stay on your toes tho because undoubtedly there will be a range against you and they will most likely harass you. But, with the regen from doran's and the reduced damage from tantrum, you should be able to withstand any harassing without much problem. Also, try and get a few tantrums to hit their hero, but don't play so aggressively that the opponent begins to back off. This is key to getting an early kill or two because they will not see you coming later.
WHY NOT GET BANDAGE TOSS UNTIL LATE?
If you REALLY want to, you can put ONE point into it early, but, I find that the extra damage from Despair early really helps me more than the stun. My reasoning is that since you are solo mid, they will probably be very cocky and reckless against you. Therefore your stun will more likely than not be in range for most of your duration in the middle lane. The extra damage that you get from despair makes finishing and chasing a lot easier.
Use the above tips until you hit level 6. This is where my choice of teleport as a summoner spell comes in. Once you hit level 6, IMMEDIATELY blue pill back to base. There, you will buy boots and teleport back to the tower mid. Now it is time to get a kill. If opponent is half life to 3/4 life, you will most likely get a kill with this combo. Get into the lane and act like you are just going to farm some and entice the opposing hero to harass you. Once he does, you got him. You have to do these steps quickly.
1. Spring your ultimate.
2. Ignite him.
3. Turn on Despair
4. Tantrum
This will either kill him or get him very close to death. At this point, with the boots you just bought, you should be a bit faster than you opponent so you should be able to follow him with despair and tantrum him when u get close. Also, YOU ARE A TANK FAIRLY EARLY SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO CHASE TO THE TOWER AT THIS POINT. You, of course, have to be able to judge the situation, but if u can last hit him at the tower, you should be able to roll away with a kill and still be alive.
If you can get a level 6 or 7 kill, the rest of the game should be easy. You can reuse that combination all throughout the game since inferno scales and your ultimate is just balla' throughout the game. Usually, once I get 3 sunfire capes, the game is over and I have won, but occasionally there is still a fight happening and I will add chalice to give me infinite mana (for all intensive purposes) and I will keep despair on for the remainder of the game.
This is a little different way of play Amumu and I hope some one can use this and roll face like I do. Have fun with it.
