Mordekaiser: I only need to kick your *** once, FOOL

Mordekaiser is in my opinion one of the most underrated champions.
Aside from the fact that hes hell of fun hes one of those champions that
can really decide a win or loss. Recently i started experimentating with items and
i think i found a build that suits my play style. I'll try to explain my item and skill choices as good as i can.
If you want to check out another really good Mordekaiser guide wich aims at a more
serious play i highly recommend "Mordekaiser done right"

Pros and Cons of this build

-Amazing farmer
-Great pusher
-Another nuke and CC
-Excellent damage without sacrificing survivability
-Enemies don't expect a Mordekaiser who does damage ;)
-Doesn't need good teammates, good pub build
-Spellvamp and lifesteal let you say goodbye to recalling

-Not very viable in competitive play
-Not much Health (he makes up for it with his Iron Man tho)

Now his abilities

(Passive): 25% of the damage dealt from ability is converted in to a temporary shield. Maximum shield strength is 650 health, and the minimum is 140. The shield decays by 3% per second.

This is what makes Mordekaiser, the durable wall of steel he is. Iron man lets
Mordekaiser lane against everyone in mid and Dual-Solo. It tends to be ignored in
Mid-Late game but really shouldn't, because it scales well with our level and magic pen.
It serves us as pseudo HP.

(Active): On next hit, Mordekaiser swings his mace with such force that it echoes out, striking up to 3 additional nearby targets, dealing his attack damage plus bonus damage. If the target is alone, the bonus damage is doubled.

In this build this will be skilled last because it scales with AD and not AP.
This doesnt mean its a bad skill and the reason we want it at lvl 4 is for the
Double damage effect and to farm and charge up our iron man.

(Active): Unleashes a protective cloud of metal shards to surround an ally, increasing armor and magic resistance and dealing magic damage per second to enemies in the cloud.

Your 2 free sunfire capes. The spellvamp lets you tank minions without taking much
damage, heck you even regenerate some health. It should be noted that by default you
can quick cast this on yourself by using ALT+W. The resistences should be ignored and
you should mostly use it on yourself unless you have a tryndamere in your team or another
melee carry.

(Active): Mordekaiser damages enemies in a cone in front of him, dealing magic damage. For each unit hit, Mordekaiser's shield absorbs additional health.

Your bread and butter skill. You can, if positioned right, target an entire minion wave.
The rule is: the more the better. Aside from farming and charging up it is an excellent
Harrassing spell. The damage at lvl 1 and 2 isnt that much but after that you can really
feel it rising.

(Active): Mordekaiser curses an enemy champion for 8 seconds, stealing life. If the target dies while under the effect of the curse, their soul is enslaved and will follow Mordekaiser for 30 seconds. During this time, Mordekaiser gains quarter of their ability power, and attack damage. The spirit gains a percentage of Mordekaiser's adjusted damage, ability power, and health totals.

This is underrated seriously. This wins teamfights if you focus right.
Main targets for this would be the enemy carry or a well fed mage. Use it together
with your ignite on the target and spam everything on them even your hextech.
If the target dies you are now a much stronger Mordekaiser and you have a Minion wich can
Towerdive and chase enemies, Tank towers, or just dish out damage. Remember to
ALT+Rightclick to move the Ghost and let it always target your main target or a tower.
In addition the Lifesteal component can be pretty much ignored except if you lane solo
and really need health.

Summoner Spells

You will get this, no exceptions.
This will add damage to your ultimate and will ensure
that your target wont get healed much.

Now we have one slot left and since we need mobility we have 5 choices left.

I like Ghost the most. It lets you chase and run around the map pretty quickly
and is the most versatile out of the 4.

Take flash if you like it. Some love it some hate it.

Same as above. Exhaust can be used offensively and defensively and can help
you to target your children of the grave target (Especially if you target the carry)

Teleport is the most defensive of all and doesn't really contribute to a fight.
I recommend this if you are new to Mordekaiser and have to recall much for health.

There are 2 things that can really hurt us.
First we have nukes, second we have CC and since we get stunlocked so
easily this is a wise choice.


We want to get the Magic Penetration from offense and all the Cooldown-reduction we
can get also the movement speed goes well with our Quintessences.


I want to say first that these runes aren't necessary at all for this build to work.

Magic Penetration works well with the rest of this build.
These are the most useful runes out of all.
Greater Seal of Vitality
Since this build lacks some Health this is always nice to have, early and later.
Together with our Force of Nature we even get more Regeneration.

After the Magic-Penetration runes these are also pretty good.
Since we don't have that much CDR this is a welcome addition.
Tip: These are great for every Champion so its worth investing!

I like being fast :)
It makes up for having no Boots of Swiftness.
An alternative here would be more CDR, or just use
Flat-Health if you already have them.


Probably the biggest WTF of this build are the items.
First of all Mordekaiser is NOT A TANK and the way most people
build him is just plain stupid. A Mordekaiser with pure tank items wont
get focused because he isn't a threat at all. If you stack health/armor/magic resis
no one will focus you, because you have A:No CC B:No Damage.
Same with AD Mordekaiser, it just scales horribly with his skills.
His Iron Man isn't profiting from auto attacks and his Mace of Spades isnt THAT strong.
Stacking Sunfire capes is also a bad thing in my opinion, because its easily countered,
only gives Armor and is boring like hell.

Now that we have that out of the way let's discuss the Items.

Start with a Regrowth Pendant. The regeneration helps you stay in the Lane and spam your Skills. You could also start with Rejuvenation Beads and Health pots to build a Spirit visage or Wardens Mail but i prefer the Pendant. You can skip
the Second regrowth pendant if you have the Greater Seal of Regeneration.

Mordekaiser is much better build with magic penetration than
ability power. That said these shoes are the best. If the enemy team is CC heavy
(Galio, Rammus, Morgana, Amumu etc) feel free to swap for Mercury's Treads.

This is huge. Just huge.
This is the reason the whole guide exists.
The fact that we can get this extremely early due to our incredible farming potential is just insane. We get more AD we would ever need, Ap to boost our skills further, Lifesteal
to regenerate and survive 1 on 1, Spell Vamp which makes our skills cost nothing and our
creeping death actually healing a nice chunk and a Nuke+Slow.
At this point some might say you wont even survive long enough, but for Mordekaiser a
good offense is the best defense.

You should get these accordingly to the other team. If they have fed physical
get Randuin's if they nuke you to death you get Force of Nature. If you cant
decide Randuin's is probably the better choice first for the additional health,
cooldown-reduction and dont forget the AoE slow.

This is really just the icing on the cake if you feel that you need more damage.
There may be situations where an Abyssal Scepter may be better but in general this
is a pretty good item for Magic-Pen.

Other good item choice

If the enemy team has mostly magic damage you could swap this for or .

Personally i like the additional health and ability power but the slow isn't
that great imo. Since most of your abilities would only slow 15% i think and are superior and should
give enough slow.

Another great choice if you get focused a lot or keep dieing in teamfights.
If you get it you should grab it when you would normally get a

This would only be useful early game if we get it before the , but since we can rush items pretty quickly and this isn't that useful late game i skip it.

You should get it last, IF you get it. Mordekaiser is much better with magic penetration
and we would only have enough ap for this to prove useful after our

Get this if you want to be credit to team and also if you want to let your heal loads of HP.

Like i explained earlier i don't like it. Besides it just doesn't go well with the play style of this build, but if you love it take it.

Things you shouldn't get

Worst health for the money if you do the math. Like with the sunfire capes it doesn't
go well with the play style of this build. The Regeneration is useless because we get
enough through and .
If you want health get since you should get enough kills.

Play style

Early Game
Make sure you told your team in the select screen that you aren't tanking and want to go
mid. Ideally you should have either a dual lane (solo lane against 2) or the middle lane.
Grab your and try to farm and Harass as much as you can.
If you got your ult and an enemy is at 1/2 HP you can try to go for a kill and if you are
in a dual lane a double kill. Activate ghost and ignite first to make sure you are in range
and then spam EVERYTHING on them. They should drop down in a few seconds giving you a
Clone. You could now if another enemy is present easily kill the other one or push a tower.
And by pushing a tower i mean totally destroy it. You should recall to buy items if you have 2300 gold for the and .
If you have to go back to the base because you died or wanted to reg grab another Regrowth first.
Try to get the Golem buff whenever you can since the build doesn't provide you with much.

Mid Game
Depending on how well you do you should have finished your at ~18 minute. In a teamfight you should spam everything on the enemy carry and drop him
down quickly to get the clone which should then wreck the enemy team. If you do this the fight will effectively be a 6vs4. Don't forget to tell your team to focus your target in
case you cant kill it. Think of yourself as of a giant metal assassin.

Late game
Never forget that you can push pretty good. You still win the game by pushing towers and
not by killing enemy players. At this point you should have all your items and already be unstoppable. Just don't get too greedy, remember, you are not a Tank.
At this point you should already know what to do.

Final Words

Remember like with every Champion that you should find a build yourself that suits you.
A guide is just a guide and should never tell you how to play, just give you a few tips.
