Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Garen - The Might of Demacia.
I would consider Garen to be a tank while also having great damage output. He is great at initiating fights and remaining alive long enough to ensure an ace. His passive: Perseverance, allows him to lane for long periods of time, however knowing when to go back and upgrade your gear is important. This is a brief explanation of how I play Garen as a tank.
Survivability in lanes
Great escape if needed
Great damage output
1.Improved Exhaust: Catch up to champs, deal more damage due to the armor debuff, can be used as an escape tool as well.
2.Ghost: By far my favourite summoner spell, great for escaping and to chasing down fleeing champs. If you want to reach your target faster, Ghost followed by Decisive Strike.
Get boots and 3 hp pots, stick a point in Judgement and lane top or bottom, you can lane with a lot of champions well, so its really not an issue who you go with. I personally prefer laning with someone who has a stun/snare. Chances are you will end up getting first blood because Judgement will bring them down to about 50% alone. Head back once you have enough to buy Heart of Gold, get this asap to make the most of your gold/10sec. Garen is very strong in lane and if you notice your farming your opponent stay in lane. I've stayed in lane long enough to buy a Randuin's Omen and boots, not recommended but possible.
You should have a Randuin's Omen and be almost ready to craft your second item depending on the opposing team setup I generally either build Force of Nature or Thornmail. By this time you are ready to start tanking for your team. You and your lane partner should go to mid or top/bottom and help them push don't be afraid to run in there and take some hits. With all your armor + Courage you should easily be able to turret dive and wipe your opponent out, don't forget you can use Decisive Strike on turrets for more damage.
By now you have a Guardian angel and are getting your Frozen Mallet or Sunfire cape, remember your the tank, build your items according to what you need to stay alive.
Don't be afraid to initiate, as you should be close to 200+ resist and Courage max rank. Priorities: the casters > dps > tanks. Remember you can always Judgement yourself out of any slows.
Random Info: I see alot of people build Garen as a physical dps, however with the way his abilities scale and his natural resistance I personally think Tank is the only true path. Just because you're building tank doesn't mean you won't get kills, on the contrary actually because Garen is usually targeted first your build will keep you alive long enough to ace the other team and you will have accomplished your job as a tank. My best game with this build is 23/7/39, Garen is extremely durable and difficult to bring down.
