Flash and Teleoprt are essentially core. Flash for insane late game flash let plays and can be used as an escape. Teleport for gank potential and lane pressure.

Gnar's clear is terrible in mini form. The best way to clear is to try to set the minion to a last hit that will proc your W passive. This is crucial because many times you may see an opening and the movement speed can become a gap closer and on the contrary you may be getting tanked and the movement speed could save your life. Try to save boomerang for poke and not clear because early game its cool down is pretty high especially if you don't catch it. Eventually while in mega form. a W Q combo or just Q can kill backline and allow for pushing of the wave.

Items like BORK and Guinsao's sound amazing but fall off heavily in late game and teamfights. People also have tried Trinity Force, however, the Sheen is wasted because Gnar uses no mana and its cost is too high.

In laning phase it tends to be CS pand poke with Q. The fun part comes in when he is about to go mega because a lesser known part of his E is that he will do a double jump off of minions and allies like his mini E but will slow on impact like mega E so essentially it becomes 2 abilities in one for a one rage use. This is great. You E in causing the slow, auto-attack, W for stun, Q for slow, auto-attack, ult for slow or stun, auto-attack. To most top liners this will result in a kill or a forced back. If you land your E, the rest of the combo is simple due to the high amounts of CC in mega form to hit the rest of the abilities.

Gnar's passive management is the hardest part to master as Gnar. Being able to time it right for team fights and 1v1s is crucial to mastering Gnar. Gnar in his mega gains more AD, armor and MR, higher health regeneration, and instantly gains health. The health gain is the most important by far. In a 1v1, instant gaining a bunch of health as well as resistances can swing a 1v1. Additionally when getting ganked under tower, the health gain can keep you alive as well as the 2 stuns and slow that are easy to hit under tower due to the terrain. In teamfights, try to poke with Q and some auto's to generate rage quick. Mini gnar in team fights is just a bad ADC generally. Skuttle in the river is a good rage builder for Baron and Dragon fights.

Walls are Gnar's bets friend. His ultimate gets a huge buff when an enemy is ulted into a Wall and his e can be a better escape when hopping over a wall. If you can coordinate or steer a team fight, engage near a wall. Tis is why champs like Jarvan IV, Anivia, Trundle, and the new champ, Ornn are great combo pieces for Gnar. The all provide terrain that Gnar can ultimate onto.

In team fights, Gnar wants to be able to get to the backline of the enemy team using one engage tool usually (flash or e). Using both flash and e usually is a long gap for the rest of your team to follow up on. Yet sometimes you can use both and ult them towards your team for just the slow and your team can follow up. Getting to the backline and harassing the carries is the main job. If Gnar can do that, the percentage of winning that team fight is increased dramatically. Gnar's ultimate is one of few that can change the outcome of the teamgiht which makes his positioning so crucial to learn. Try to find interesting paths to get there. Running head on is predictable and can lead to a easy retreat.

Gnar is a overall high skill champ with a huge payoff if perfected correctly. Remember to use his combo effectively, try to position near walls, aim for the backline, and poke heavily in lane to assert lane pressure. With all these tools and the stupidity of Frozen Mallet, plus Q, plus W passive, you can chase down enemies for that slow, painful death.
