Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
About this build:
This is the build that I use when I play Kog'Maw and the build that I've tested and that I've found fits best (for me at least). Kog'Maw is, as you all know, a very squishy champion and is dependant on the range and his skills, and I feel that this build let's him go wild and help support his team while killing off enemies running away. The order of the items in this build is the order that I usually buy them, but if you feel that you need the survivability then switch the item order. Buy them in the order you find most suited since this is just how I do it.
Feel free to comment suggestions and/or ideas that you might have.
Cleanse - Since Kog'Maw is squishy this will help you out of those sticky situations.
Ghost - With cleanse this is a lifesaver.
Greater Mark of Insight x 9 - The magic penetration helps out letting you do a bit more damage.
Greater Seal of Force x 9 - Kog'Maw is dependant on his mana and I find that mp5/lvl is better than just straight mp5.
Greater Glyph of Focus x 9 - Needs to be able to spam his skills when the time comes.
Greater Quintessence of Fortitude x 3 - To help against the squishyness a bit.
You might be wondering why I'm using 9/21/0 instead of 9/0/21. Well, I feel that my playstyle is a bit reckless and that I need the extra health and such that I get from the Defence tree. If you feel that you are "good" enough, feel free to go 9/0/21 instead.
Tips and Tricks:
Since Kog'Maw's ulti let's you see stealthed enemies, make sure you always check bushes and such when alone or when you're team are gathered to get a tower. It will save you and your team being killed for nothing. It helps you and your team to not get ganked.
Check bushes or/and Fog of War when..
- in lane phase and there are enemy missing.
- with your team pushing.
Also, you're Void Ooze should be used to help team mates with low health. If you see one of your mates trying to get away use Void Ooze right over the path so the enemy gets slowed. This will surely help your team mate get away. If not, its a good thing to do if you want to get away. Spit it out and run while they're slowed :3
Start your game of with buying Meki Pendant and two Healing Potions.
I find that Kog'Maw is a very good champion to go mid with. His Void Ooze can kill off a whole horde of minions (later on) which makes it harder for the enemy to get some time with destroying your tower. Don't spam Void Ooze trying to kill off the enemy champion since in the early game you don't have the mana regen to support it. This is why I suggest getting Chalice of Harmony asap. You can spam a bit and get your mana back fast enough to stop minions if they get too close.
After you've gotten the Chalice of Harmony you should get your boots. Since Kog'Maw has very low running speed normally (and he's so squishy) I prefer to get the Boots of Swiftness. I've tried with Sorcerer's Shoes and Mercury's Treads but have recently fallen in love with the Boots of Swiftness. I do think that the Sorcerer's Shoes are the best for him but its not often I find myself in a match that I don't feel I need Mercury's Treads better. And with Cleanse and Ghost, Boots of Swiftness helps out more in my opinion.
Now you should be able to avoid most ranged skills and run away from a gank if it comes your way. Plus, you should also be able to use your skills enough to scare your enemies or keep them on their toes.. if not, you're at least making it a bit of hell for them. The next item should be Nashor's Tooth. Since you're probably hitting the enemy towers by now the attack speed let's you take down a bit more of the towers health before the enemy comes to kill you. Plus, the ability power, mp5 and the passive is just really nice to have as well :3
PS: If everything is going really bad and you're getting killed a lot, get Rylai's Crystal Scepter before Nashor's Tooth, but if things are going this bad the game must be going to hell o.o
Here is where you should look for what's going on around you. If you're taking a lot of damage and dying (which is never good) you might want to get Rylai's Crystal Scepter before Deathfire Grasp. If not, get Deathfire first. The ability power and mp5 are great and the cooldown reduction is a sweet thing, plus you get an active passive which can help you get down those pesky enemies a little. If you remember to use it that is.
If you're taking a lot of damage and need the health:->->->
If you're not taking that much damage and can wait with the extra health:->->->->->
Now get the item that you didn't pick (Rylai's Crystal Scepter or Deathfire Grasp) and of course lastly, if you get this far, get yourself a shiny Zhonya's Ring.->->
I've tried Guinsoo's Rageblade with Kog'Maw and I see the positive things with it but still don't think its worth it on this champion.
I've still not tried Archangel's Staff enough to make a good statement about if it should be used or not. I shall try it out more and see if I find it better.
I've not tried Rod of Ages and will try it out and make a statement after what I find out.
I've tried Mejai's Soulstealer and haven't put it in the build simply because its a gamble. If things are going well you could skip an item but I hardly ever use it which is why it isn't here.
