Force Swain's Ultimate to Disengage
When Swain activates his ultimate, use Alistar's W (Headbutt) to push him away from your team, or Q (Pulverize) to knock him up, wasting his ultimate's duration.
Evade Swain's Root and Chain Stun with E (Trample)
Swain's E (Nevermove) applies a root on its return projectile. Use the ghosting effect of your E (Trample) to evade the root and stack up for a stun.

Champion Build Guide
Alistar has multiple viable keystone options depending on matchup and lane conditions. Choosing the correct rune greatly impacts your engage reliability, survivability, and lane pressure.
[hr]
Unsealed Spellbook — Core Rune ChoiceUnsealed Spellbook is the most commonly used keystone due to its versatility across most matchups. The number of possibilities this rune provides significantly increases Alistar’s playmaking potential. With Spellbook, your laning phase and roaming become much more effective, as you can adapt your summoner spells based on lane state, matchup, and game tempo.
This rune also enables unique plays, such as stealing important objectives with Smite or applying strong map pressure with Teleport and other situational summoner spells.
|
Spellbook gives Alistar unmatched flexibility, allowing him to swap summoner spells depending on lane safety, enemy threats, and macro needs. |
|
Access to Teleport increases map pressure, improves roaming, and allows Alistar to impact side lanes and objectives more consistently. |
|
Spellbook enables high-impact plays such as stealing major objectives, which can completely change the outcome of a game. |
Recommended Matchups — Unsealed Spellbook
Bard |
Blitzcrank |
Lux |
Janna
|
Brand |
Braum |
Leona |
Maokai
|

|
Spellbook allows Alistar to constantly adapt, making both defensive and aggressive responses more reliable throughout the game.
[hr]
Glacial Augment — Anti-Poke & Damage ControlGlacial Augment works very well against ranged supports with strong poke, area damage, or high early auto-attack pressure. This rune helps minimize incoming damage, slow enemy pressure, and reduce how oppressive these lanes feel during the laning phase.
|
Glacial Augment reduces enemy damage and limits movement after your engage, making early trades safer against poke-heavy lanes. |
This rune is especially effective in lanes where minimizing damage and controlling enemy movement matters more than forcing early all-ins.
Recommended Matchups — Glacial Augment
Lulu |
Seraphine |
Vel'Koz |
Xerath
|
Yuumi |
Zyra
|
[hr]
Phase Rush — Anti-Mobility & Chase ControlPhase Rush is a strong situational keystone against highly mobile or slippery champions. It was one of the best runes when learning Alistar, as the movement speed allows you to escape bad situations or force deep engages.
This rune allows Alistar to:
- Escape when caught out of position
- Ignore the enemy frontline and reach priority targets
- Stick to mobile champions during extended fights
- Dodge skillshots more easily
|
Phase Rush provides burst movement speed after your combo, allowing Alistar to reposition, chase, or disengage safely. |
Recommended Matchups — Phase Rush
Nami |
Nautilus |
Neeko |
Rakan
|
Renata Glasc |
Tahm Kench |
Taric |
Zilean
|
[hr]
Aftershock — Anti-Burst & Frontline StabilityAftershock is extremely effective against champions that want to punish your engage with immediate burst damage. This rune provides strong resistances right after you go in, allowing Alistar to survive and absorb pressure.
|
Aftershock grants massive resistances after CC, making Alistar much harder to burst during engages. |
Recommended Matchups — Aftershock
Poppy |
Pantheon |
Thresh
|
In these matchups, Aftershock prevents you from being instantly punished and allows you to function as a reliable frontline engager.
[hr]
Electrocute — Early Kill PressureElectrocute is a strong situational keystone against supports with weak early game and low durability. In these lanes, Alistar wants extra burst damage to punish mistakes and secure easy kills when engaging.
|
Electrocute provides bonus burst damage on engage, making early all-ins significantly more lethal. |
Recommended Matchups — Electrocute
Sona |
Karma
|
In these matchups, Electrocute allows Alistar to snowball the lane early and secure kills through aggressive play.
Choosing the correct summoner spell on Alistar greatly impacts lane stability, kill pressure, and teamfight reliability. While Flash is mandatory, the second summoner spell should always be chosen based on the enemy support matchup.
[hr]
Flash + Heal — Sustain & Lane StabilityHeal is the most consistent option in many matchups. It provides sustain, movement speed, and extra protection for your ADC, making trades safer and reducing the risk of losing lane through poke or extended fights.
Flash + Heal is especially effective against:
Braum |
Leona |
Maokai |
Milio
|
Morgana |
Nautilus |
Neeko |
Pantheon
|
Pyke |
Rakan |
Rell |
Senna
|
Soraka |
Tahm Kench |
Thresh |
Vel'Koz
|
Xerath |
Yuumi |
Zilean
|
Heal offers reliability in these lanes, allowing Alistar to play patiently and protect his ADC through difficult trades.
[hr]
Flash + Exhaust — Anti-Burst & ControlExhaust is extremely effective against champions with high damage output, strong poke, or oppressive lane pressure. It reduces incoming damage and helps neutralize aggressive trades.
Flash + Exhaust is recommended against:
Bard |
Blitzcrank |
Janna |
Karma
|
Lulu |
Lux |
Nami |
Poppy
|
Renata Glasc |
Seraphine |
Swain |
Zyra
|
Exhaust improves peeling power and survivability, while still allowing Alistar to engage safely.
[hr]
Flash + Ignite — Kill Pressure & All-In LanesIgnite is a situational but powerful choice in lanes where killing the enemy support is required to gain lane control. These matchups often revolve around decisive all-ins rather than sustain.
Flash + Ignite is especially effective against:
Brand |
Taric
|
Ignite helps secure kills, applies Grievous Wounds, and works extremely well with **tower insec plays**, allowing Alistar to confirm kills even if he dies during the engage.
This option is higher risk but offers strong snowball potential when executed correctly.
Alistar is a very simple and easy champion to play, but in the current meta he can be far more dangerous than he looks. Most players focus on stacking armor and building items like Locket of the Iron Solari, instead of prioritizing health.
Core Insight: Health > Just Armor
|
Health is one of Alistar’s most important stats. Increases overall survivability against both physical and magical damage. |
|
Armor reduces physical damage but suffers from diminishing returns, especially against penetration or burst damage. |
|
Effective HP = Health + Armor. Combining health and armor allows Alistar to tank massive damage while still being useful for his team. |
|
Quick Tip: Stack armor early if enemies are mostly AD, but always balance it with health to survive mixed damage or burst threats. |
Build Philosophy: Tank With Style
|
Alistar can become a true war machine: tank insane amounts of damage while remaining relevant for peeling, engaging, and protecting your team. |
| ap item | Optional: Mix in some AP items to make your engages hit harder and combos feel more impactful. Even a small AP investment increases your Q + W combo burst, making trades and skirmishes more threatening. |
| strategy | Strategy Note: Early game focus on survivability. Mid/Late game: front-line disruption, peeling for carries, and zoning threats. |
Alistar’s playstyle as a support begins the moment the base barriers drop. Your primary responsibility is map control, lane dominance, and helping your ADC farm safely.
Initial Ward & Vision Placement (Level 1)
Move quickly to the bot lane’s three main bushes.
Place a ward in the second bush — ensures early vision and protects against enemy jungle or support rotations.
After placing the ward, position yourself in the bush at the entrance of your jungle, acting as a guard to prevent early invades and provide lane pressure.
Many supports like to wait in the second bush unwarded, which can catch you off guard.
If your team is coordinating an early invade, adjust your strategy: consider buying a Control Ward or using Oracle Lens depending on the situation.
|
Vision / Zone Control Master body positioning to protect your ADC and zone enemies. Apply pressure only when it is safe and avoid overextending. |
Level 2 Engage
Once you hit level 2, consider engaging based on lane conditions and enemy positioning. Alistar relies heavily on follow-up from allies. Cooldowns are long, so commit only when follow-up is guaranteed. Minor trades or poke exchanges may have occurred; gauge health pools and summoner spells before engaging.
Prioritize the enemy ADC or low-health targets. Goal: reduce the target from 100→0 or force summoner usage (
Flash /
Barrier). Play safe if the enemy jungler is nearby or your ADC isn’t ready.Engage cautiously, using
W +
Q for disruption. Communicate with your ADC and jungler for maximum impact. With the rune
Phase Rush, you can poke using the combo
Headbutt +
Pulverize and disengage quickly depending on the situation. Force summoner usage like
Flash or
Barrier for extra pressure. It's useful to deal some damage while staying safe.
|
Your early ward will return around the time the first Scuttle Crab spawns. |
| stealth | Place a ward in the river, slightly above the small bush, to track enemy movements. |
|
If your jungler is pathing toward bot, assist in contesting the Scuttle Crab, especially if the enemy jungler attempts the same. |
|
After level 2 trades, your first base recall is crucial for lane control and preparing objectives. |
|
Item Priorities • Boots of Swiftness → mobility for engages and roaming. •
Refillable Potion → sustain in lane.•
Control Ward /
Oracle Lens → maintain vision and deny enemy scouting.
|
|
Ward Placement Options • Bush at jungle entrance → spot enemy rotations or jungler pathing. • Dragon → if your team plans early contest. |
| vision |
Considerations Use this first back as a timing window to reset vision, coordinate with your jungler, and call potential plays. Always prioritize vision in mid and side lanes; jungler camps provide strong clues about upcoming fights. Alistar shines during lane and roaming phases — make calls, accelerate tempo, and snowball advantages. |
| tips |
Additional Notes Alistar is an early game-oriented support, strongest in the first 10–15 minutes with crowd control and engages. Goal: force plays, secure vision, and maintain tempo across the map. If early aggression isn’t possible: • Protect ADC farm, keep lane stable. • Use body and CC to zone and deny dives. • Prioritize vision and peel over risky plays. |
|
Timing Objectives Be ready 45–47 seconds before major objectives (
Dragon,
Rift Herald,
Baron,
Rift Scuttles).Recall, buy key items, and reach the objective in time to contest or set vision. |
|
Early Objective Contesting Coordinate with your team to contest or secure objectives. Place Control Wards preemptively to spot rotations and set up fights. Deny enemy vision using
Oracle Lens.
|
| roam |
Roaming Strategy After your first back, your best roaming windows are at level 4 and level 6. If bot lane is stalled, roam to mid or top depending on your jungler’s pathing. Don’t be afraid to leave bot lane — Alistar isn’t just a peel support; he’s a tempo accelerator. Use your CC to secure vision, tempo, and help snowball other lanes. |
| map |
Rotations • Rotate mid lane with your ADC when necessary to control map pressure and secure objectives. • Always consider the Teleport availability of your mid and top laners for lane safety. • Sync rotations with your jungler to ensure vision and numbers advantage. |
