Introduction

So you want to play croc eh? Renekton is one of (if not) the funnest champions I've played. You can rape everything in sight and be extremely difficult to kill. This build is going to focus on offtank Renekton, the only way to build him IMO. DPS ren gets eaten up in a second and tank ren is very easy to ignore. If you want to be very hard to kill and very hard to ignore then look no further, you've found the right place! Let's doooo et!

Change Log

3/12/11 - Build is new! No changes yet.
3/21/11 - Added a rune I am testing out as well as an item due to some feedback given in the comments. In the combos area, Dice will now be represented by Catlyn's Ace in the Hole for more pleasant readability.
3/22/11 - DV/Trollvote section added. Was hoping I wouldn't have to make this for a while :(
3/29/11 - Masteries section added.
4/4/11 - After playing a lot of games with Deso quints I can safely confirm that this is the best way to go. Holy **** damage...
4/26/11 - New section added (below).

What did the last patch do for Renekton? Testing and Updates.

V1.0.0. 115

Now that our OP croc is nerfed, everyone is coming to this build and asking me if it still works. The verdict? It does.

So far I can not see too much diference in how he is played. Just because his AD ratio on S&D got a slight boost should not really change how you build him. However having said that I am now going to expiriment a bit with the build. My current new prototype for changes is:

Building the Brutalizer, however not upgrading it until the very end.
Buying a Bloodthirster after my cleaver.
Buying Wit's End as a possible item.

Runes

Let me start by saying that runes are COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY personal preference. Here I am going to suggest some good sets that you may want to try out. Build for your playstyle!

My set (recommended):

Greater Mark of DesolationGreater Seal of Vitality Greater Quintessence of Desolation

Armor pen because it is the best Mark in the game. Health per Level seals to help you be a tanky badass late game. Cooldown reduction per level Glyphs because this paired with your masteries paired with your core build is going to put you very close to 40% CDR lategame without buying any additional items. This allows your build to be more dynamic thus allowing a better selection of items. You really are going to have good CDR lategame so it makes sense to buy runes that compliment that lategame. Deso quints for the very noticable damage boost both early and late game.

Alternatives:

Armor seals are going to help with your early game which... Honestly isn't very weak. If you want them go ahead.

Dodge seals are good on pretty much every champion, so if you like them for ren feel free.

If you want it for early game it's up to you. Just know that you are going to require another CDR item to hit that 40% cap late game.

This gives a nice boost of MR for lategame if you feel casters are bursting you down too much. Again this means you will need another CDR item.

If you do not start with a doran's shield you'd better take these. Pretty much is going to make you even more difficult to kill early game, though you probably won't need it.

Masteries

9/21/0 (see top for specifics)

Defensive masteries are great for Renekton's early game and are probably pretty necessary. We are basically getting every mastery that will do something for ren in this tree and skipping ardor, however the main use here is for that health boost and the nice Tenacity buff. Going 9/21/0 is just very solid.

Why is Good Hands>Perseverance?

Ok... So I don't take good hands with this build but I am just going to put this here because it is too awesome :P

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa... Archaic Knowledge? Dude... Only his ult does magic damage...

What else do you want to do with one point? Put it in for 2 armor pen, I don't care. The 30th point is pretty useless so I just throw it in magic pen.

Why not 9 into the Utility tree?

This is pretty much all for the CDR mastery to get to that 40% without needing an addtional CDR item.

If you were to alter your masteries, what would you do?

I would remove 8 points from my offense tree and just throw them into utility for that exp. Either way is fine, I suppose.

Abilities

Passive: Reign of Anger - Renekton gains 5 Fury per attack. Having 50 or more Fury empowers his abilities with bonus effects but drains 50 Fury when they are used. Out of combat, he loses 5 Fury every 2 seconds. When Renekton is below 50% Health, Fury gains are increased by 50%.

Well, you know renekton by that red bar of RAGE you see when he has 50 fury. Managing your fury well and using it at the right time is what will separate the good renektons from the great renektons. His base spells are pretty weak but his fury spells are insanely powerful.

Q: Cull The Meek - Renekton swings his blade, dealing 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 (+0.6 per bonus attack damage) damage to nearby enemies and healing for 10% of the damage dealt, up to 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150.

When Renekton has more than 50 Fury he deals 50% additional damage and heals for 15% of the damage dealt, the healing hard cap is tripled. Consumes 50 Fury.

In my opinion renekton's best skill. Cull The Meek makes you a farming beast as well as a survivability beast. With this ability you are going to put out some good damage and get a nice heal. In the lane phase you want to hit as many minions as possible with this as it gives up to 25 fury gain (something the tooltip above didn't mention). In teamfights you want to hit as many enemies with it as possible and try to spam it for maximum damage output.

FURY use: Amazing for killing creeps in the jungle and in the lane, you want to use the fury version of this ability when you need to heal or farm. If you need that extra damage to finish off an enemy and your W is on cooldown go ahead and pop this as well, the damage is very nice.

W: Ruthless Predator - Renekton's next attack swings twice, dealing 5 / 15 / 25 / 35 / 45 (+0.75 per attack damage) damage per hit, stunning his target for 0.75 seconds and applying on-hit effects.

When Renekton has more than 50 Fury, his next attack will swing three times dealing 5 / 15 / 25 / 35 / 45 (+0.75 per attack damage) damage per hit and stunning his target for 1.5 seconds. Consumes 50 Fury.

It's a nice stun no doubt. Since it is melee it is very good for cancelling ults and what not. Earlygame you can put out some nice damage as well with just a non fury charged stun. This is your main single target damage ability in fights... And early game it is going to hit HARD.

FURY use: This ability becomes exponentially better when you use it with fury. The damage early (and late) game is ridiculous and your stun lasts 1.5 seconds. Early game the enemies are going to be in shock when they see 1/3 of their health gone just like that. Main use is in fights to cripple a squishy but it can also be used for red buff if you don't need to heal.

E: Slice and Dice - Slice: Renekton dashes forward, dealing 45 / 75 / 105 / 135 / 165 (+0.6 per bonus attack damage) damage to targets along the way. If he hits a target he gains the ability to use Dice.

Dice: Renekton dashes, dealing 45 / 75 / 105 / 135 / 165 (+0.6 per bonus attack damage) damage along the way. When Renekton has more than 50 Fury during Dice, he deals 50% additional damage and shreds the armor of targets he hits by 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 for 4 seconds. Consumes 50 Fury.

Slice 'em and Dice 'em. This ability is great for farming, chasing, initiating, escaping, and everything in between. The damage is actually really good and so is the scaling, however the main use is going to be for the dash - not the damage. It's too hard to S&D through enemies without being in a teamfight because of the range, so you wand to use the dash. Great for early game harassment and survivability. Here's some combos you should use with this ability.

***I will be using Caitlyn's Ace in the Hole icon to represent Dice. The icons look pretty similar. Hope this doesn't confuse anyone and if it does let me know in the comments :P

Harrassment:
Slice in to all minions, use Cull The Meek for some quick fury, stun with Ruthless Predator, Dice out.

Healing:
Build up 50 fury,Slice in to minions, use Cull The Meek, Dice out.

Escaping: Run into bush, wait for enemy to move to the front of the bush (to cut off your escape). Stun if necessary, Slice through the enemy, Dice away.

Chasing/Ganking: Slice through minions if you can't reach the enemy, apply stun with Ruthless Predator, Dice through enemy along escape path, exhaust if you have it, and spam Q and W.

FURY use: The fury charge of Slice and Dice isn't all that noticeable. It has been patched to remove a percentage of armor which makes it better, however usually when I use fury and E in the same sentence it's "Make sure you don't waste your fury with Dice".

Ultimate: Dominus - Renekton empowers himself with dark energies, gaining increased size and 300 / 450 / 600 health for 15 seconds. While empowered, he deals 50 / 75 / 100 (+10% of ability power) magic damage to nearby enemies and generates 5 Fury per second.

Ahhh, your ultimate. Dominus. Just say it. Dominus. Every aspect of this ult compliments you so well.

1) You are going to become much harder to kill with the instant heal it gives you.
2) If they do try to kill you, they are going to be punished the longer they are fighting you.
3) It gives you fury regeneration, meaning you are going to get fury up faster while you are fighting, meaning more damage.
4) It lasts 15 seconds! This means you are going to have an amazing DoT for the entire teamfight. Don't be afraid to pop this early before you gank as the fury you can build up can help to charge up from 0 to a larger duration stun, sometimes making the difference in a successful and non successful gank.
5) It turns you into a huge scary *** crocodile.. If you combine this with the Galactic skin it pretty much means instant win in a teamfight.

Items

Yeah, I know, you probably skipped everything listed above and went straight to this section. It's why you clicked the link and opened this guide. While I recommend reading everything above, enjoy the section that you came to this build for.

Start With:

Pretty much the starting item of every Renekton, Doran's makes you very tanky and hard to kill early game. You are probably going to start with around 760 health, which is MASSIVE for early game.

First Time Back:

Sight Ward

Hopefully you are now chilling at fountain after successfully getting first blood (or at least a kill). Before you head back to your lane pick up boots and a ward for their jungler if they have one. Keep owning.

Early Game Closing Items:

Most rens have a build that looks like this at the end of early game and I don't blame them. You are now going to have 30% CDR, some nice armor pen and attack damage. Prepare for some stupid voice puns!

Who's (what's) Next on the Chopping Block?

This is THE item for renekton. Lots of health, lots of armor, and a DoT that synergizes with your ult very well. Once you get your Sunfire nobody is going to try to 1v1 you.

Destruction Approaches

Now that you have your sunfire, it's time to get some more damage. You bought your brutilizer so now is the time to finish it. You now have a Youmuu's Ghostblade! This item is going to allow you to smack people in the mouth with your high attack speed passive and your armor penetration. Have fun smacking people in the mouth.

Next is a Black Cleaver. This is yet another item that seems to be made for our interior crocodile alligator. With a fury stacked Ruthless Predator you are going to instantly apply three stacks to the enemy, making attacks on them much more harmful, much faster.

Nothing Will Stop me

So now that you have finished up your core build, you are going to want to build more tanky. How much more tanky is up to the game you are in. The four items to choose from here are:

Best armor item in the game, and every better for ren. You get armor, health, CDR (you don't really need it though), and some slow utility. Keep in mind though that you already have a Sunfire Cape so you have some nice armor already. If you need more though this is the clear choice.

FoN gives the highest magic resist in the game and some very impressive health regen. If you just want some hard MR this is the item to buy. Gonna make it real hard for any magic to get under those scales.

The last choice here is one of the best items in the game for any champion, the Banshee's Veil. Get this if their CC is ridiculous OR you just don't know what to get. This will always be good.

Only get this as your sixth item. A GA offers a nice balance of armor and MR, however it does not give health. Obviously the active is the main reason you would get this item, but don't ignore the stats to it, they are very nice.

If you or your team needs more tankyness, choose two of the three items listed here and you will have a full build (sell the shield). If not and you feel that you can go for some more offense, then let's do it!

Cut Them Down

This list is organized from best to least. It's pretty rare to reach this point as most of the time you are going to be so dangerous that they will have surrendered already. Here are your choices:

If the other team has health stackers this item is a no brainer. It also applies with Ruthless Predator so you can get some very nice burst on tanks by using a Madred's. This is a pretty safe pick, especially if they are tanky. Also don't forget that this gives a small amount of armor.

Ok.. So this isn't really a damage item but it does give a little AD and a lot of health. If you think you should build a littttle bit tankier this is a good pick. I would get this more for the stats and less for the slow, though, as you really don't chase with your autoattacks. It does offer a nice bonus, however.

Basically the only time you get this item is when you want some damage and the two items above just don't seem appropriate to build. This means... Rarely. This is going to give you more damage than you would think. Sheen proc with W offers some nifty burst. Triforce also gives some health. The problem I have with this item is that zeal doesn't offer much besides the movement speed. Having some attack speed is nice but it isn't what makes you effective. Crit is pretty much worthless as well.

Testing this out as well.

Playstyle

Early Game:

If you can solo top 1v1 go for it. Renekton is pretty dominant vs other enemy melee champions but he can struggle vs ranged. Keep that in mind. If you duo lane make sure your partner is someone who is not as kitable as you. That would be bad.

Early game you want your main focus to be on last hitting, however you are very capable of putting the hurt on many enemies. Build up 50 fury and then go for some harassment with your W. Some combos for this are in the Abilities section. This is going to hit the enemies extremely hard and may even amount to first blood. Ren is like sion in the way that he does not slowly kite enemies. His harassment is hit them like a train and then back off.

Mid Game:

The main focus of this phase is farming up your Sunfire. Your mid game is pretty uneventful and much more boring than other champions. Pretty much you just go with the flow. Help a lane if it needs help, gank if something needs ganking. However, you are more likely to have someone gank your lane than for you to gank other lanes. You just want to sure that whenever a fight starts up, you are there. Most often in this phase you just want to farm, farm, farm. It's very easy to do! Use a fury charged Cull The Meek, Slice, Dice and the minions are gone. Go hunting for those pesky large waves and farm 'em up. Once you get your Sunfire Cape you can go do whatever you feel is necessary to win the game. You are a pretty scary beast now.

Keep dragon warded and other areas. Now that you have your Sunfire you aren't super item dependent so you can buy wards. Whenever you get the chance you need to take dragon! Have good map awareness. If there is nobody better fit to take the red buff go ahead and grab it, or help your ranged carry out with it.

Late Game:

Ahh, the teamfight phase. Now that you are well farmed group up with your team and push. You know how this goes.. Pushing, enemy defends... Someone leaves, some poking, and eventually something happens. I would recommend maintaining good map control and always have dragon and baron warded. Renekton really isn't the best initiator and that is better fit for your main tank. Once your main tank initiates and the fight has begun what you want to do is:

1) Pop Dominus and let out a loud battle cry for the world to hear (at least your neighbors). It's time.
2) Exhaust their main damage dealer.
3) Slice through an enemy to the most annoying squishy champion they have, and croc chop with a fury W. Now use Cull The Meek and Dice through your target.
4) If you have your Youmuu's active this is the time to use it. Continue to croc chop until your target is dead, and move on to your next target, the enemy champion causing the most trouble.
4a) If you think the slow from Randuin's Omen is needed (if you have the item), pop it here.
5) If an enemy is trying to escape, hit W and flash on their *** for the kill.
6) Repeat 3-5 until you are victorious.
7) /t
8) Repeat 1-7 until the victory screen pops up.

Hopefully the fight went well and you are now pushing for the win. If the death timers aren't high enough yet to push for the win, go take baron (if possible). You don't want to make any stupid mistakes that let the other team back into the game. Remember to build according to the enemy team and dominate with Dominus!

Skill Sequence

This order is going to skill your best ability, Cull The Meek first, while not ignoring your main damage ability Ruthless Predator. I skill this way so that your early, mid, and lategame are all solid, as well as giving you two strong options for using your fury. You are going to do some painful damage and have awesome healing and farming at the same time rather than having one better attribute.

Masteries

This list is organized from what I feel to be most viable to least viable.

What I use:

- Exhaust is just amazing on ren. This is going to allow you to win every 1v1 situation early on (unless they have it too) and will allow for some easy chasing. Lategame you can exhaust their carry to severely gimp their damage output while you croc chop them or someone else.

- Flash is another amazing spell for renekton. S&D on cooldown and you are about to get cced? Flash. Enemy running away with a sliver of health left? Ruthless Predator and Flash. Whatever the need, flash seems to always be off cooldown at the perfect time to fulfill it.

What you can use:

- I used to run this with flash before I discovered my above combo. Renekton can sometimes be screwed over by CC and cleanse can help save you.

- Ghost is a strong spell on any champion but ren just doesn't seem to be as dependent on it as others. Pretty pointless for chasing as almost everyone has ghost and the mastery, he doesn't really need it for escapes... I just don't really like ghost as much on him.

- Nice for early game 1v1s however useless for pretty much the rest of the game. If the enemy team has a swain or mundo and nobody on your team has ignite it may be worth it to pick it up.

- Teleport is nice for farming and map control I suppose.

- Always nice for someone on the team to have fortify.

What I don't recommend:

- Not a terrible spell but why would you need it?

- More fit for supports IMO.

- Does this even do anything?

- While renekton can jungle, this isn't what this build is about.

- No.

- Why isn't this on the top of the list? I forget -.-
