Introduction

This is a very flexible guide as you will see that you can buy different items (and spells sometimes) at different moments. I have been playing Ryze for quite some time and this is the final build I am using. I enjoy it because it gives you freedom of choice and a lot of nuking power.

Masteries

This is mostly an Utility build but you will need some Cooldown Reduction and Magic Penetration from Offence so these are the masteries:

Offense - 9

Archmage's Savvy 3/3
Deadlines 1/3 - You need 4 to get more masteries so this is a small sacrifice.

Sorcery 4/4
Archaic Knowledge 1/1 - This is the main reason for spending points in Offense.

Defense - 0 (You will attack not defend so we will ignore this...)

Utility - 21

Main branch of masteries.

Good Hands 3/3
Perseverence 2/3 - Again a small sacrifice, but it can be useful.

Awareness 4/4 - A must!

Greed 1/1
Meditation 3/3

Quickness 3/3
Blink of an Eye 1/1 - Need it for flash.

Intelligence 3/3 - Cooldowns suck and this helps :)

Pressence of the Master 1/1 - Cooldown reduction for Summoner Spells? Yes!

Runes

Glyphs: Greater Glyph of Celerity - Cooldown Reduction per Level
Seals: Greater Seal of Celerity - Mana Regen/5 per Level
Marks: Greater Mark of Insight - Magic Penetration

Quints: Greater Quintessence of Celerity - Cooldown Reduction per Level

This can be altered. If you want buy Mana Regen per 5 (not /5 per level) but nothing more.

Summoner Spells

Ignite
Flash

You will use Flash and Ignite. Heal can be a good solution but it doesn't help late game as much as you think (you either escape death or you die). Flash is better because it allows you to escape faster. Ignite helps you finish off a fleeing enemy with low health. If you also use flash you can nuke your enemy ignite him and then enjoy the kill :)

Items

I will divide this in recalls and period of the game:

1.Early Game

Start off with 2x Health Potions and Sapphire Crystal.

This will give you a bit more damage for Overpower at level 2, because it is boosted by mana.

FIRST RECALL at (I:1475 gold or II:2000 gold)

I: This is ONLY in case you are in trouble.

1xBoots of Swiftness - You can change it for Ionian Boots of Lucidity (If you buy this you'll also go for Void Staff)
1xRuby Crystal

II: This is what you would normally do.

1xBoots of Swiftness
1xCatalyst the Protector

2.Mid game

SECOND RECALL at 1710 gold.

1xRod of Ages

THIRD RECALL at 1245 gold.

1xFiendish Codex - No need for it anymore (if you have CD Reduction Boots) buy Blasting Wand

FOURTH RECALL at 1400 gold.

1xDeathfire Grasp - You will get to use this one mid to late game so put it in an inventory slot easily accessible for you.

If you have CD Reduction boots get Void Staff
3. Late Game

When you reach 1600 gold:

1xNeedlessly Large Rod

After this at 2000 gold:

1xRabadon's Deathcap

This are the main items you want to buy. You don't have to stick to the recalls but this is when you should go back to heal in a normal or easy game. Note that Ryze shouldn't die until mid game. During late game use Deathfire Grasp to lower a tanky character's HP (or Void Staff's Magic Penetration to ruin someone's day).

After you buy this items you can go for 3 things (which I recommend but you can go for anything):

1)Mejai's Soulstealer - if you get good kills

2)Another Rabadon's Deathcap - no it doesn't stack the 30% AP but you gain 155AP and you will get to 500-550 AP and that's huge

3)Void Staff - This is really good for magic penetration. If you have Deathfire Grasp go for this one next.

Skill Sequence and Strategy

You basically need to go Spell Flux>Overpower>Rune Prison. However, during early game it is better to take the Prison fourth and level up Spell Flux twice. Level up Desperate Power whenever you can.

The strategy will be pretty straight forward. Before level 6 just spell flux mobs that are near the enemy to hit him. If you have a laning partner catch a weak enemy in prison at level 4 and spam him with Spell Flux and Overpower.

After level 6 your strategy is: Prison>Desperate Power>Spell Flux>Overpower and when/if the enemy runs low on health Ignite.

Farming

Use Desperate power when you reach mid game. You will have about 35 seconds Cooldown on it and..well you can farm minions non-stop. Do not use Overpoer or Prison, they waste mana. Just use Spell Flux twice (yes you will be able to use it twice)

Pros / Cons

Let's start off with the pros:
    Easy minion farming
Hell of a nuker (60% HP taken instantly with the spell spams)
    Great carry
Fredom of choice after 3 core items

There is one big con and that's only fixed a bit by flash; Ryze being stunned will most certainly end with your death. 1v1 Ryze vs stuns is useless. The only chance is to flash out of danger or hopefully run after being stunned with flash.
