Champion Build Guide

[UPDATED] Rank 1 Taliyah NA - Fiki's Taliyah JG

By Fiki
About Me
Hi! I'm Fiki, but you may know me better as Fikilol on twitch or Nathan Fielder in game. I was the Rank 1 Taliyah in NA, with a rank of grandmasters at around 175LP with a 69% (nice xD) winrate. I mostly play Taliyah as she is my favorite and best champ; however, I do play other champions sometimes. In terms of credibility, don't trust the people who have 100,000 or 150,000 mastery points... trust the person who is literally the best in NA (see picture below).

I hope you find this guide helpful as you learn Taliyah. I'm currently a Recruiter in the Video Game Industry and just stream in my spare time. I used to be the jungler on the UMass competitive team as well. If you have any questions or want to discuss Taliyah (or League in general), I recommend checking out my Discord channel. We have a pretty awesome community and I'd love for you to be a part of it :D

Why Taliyah in the Jungle?
Taliyah is viable in almost every role. Most commonly she is played mid and jungle however there are some people who play her Top/Bot/Sup.

For me, I think Taliyah is strongest in the Jungle. With her incredible roaming potential with the movement speed she received from her passive Rock Surfing as well as her threat to be almost anywhere on the map with her ultimate Weaver's Wall In season 8, I was a mid main for about half the season and I exclusively played Taliyah in the midlane but since switching roles to the jungle, I have never even considered looking back.

Some might think that since she is a squishy mage, she would not fare so well in the jungle, especially with clearing camps. This is not the case. With proper kiting (which is Taliyah's bread and butter), Taliyah can stay relatively healthy at almost all points in her clear - which I will go into later on in this guide.
Her Kit
PASSIVE
ABILITY
ROCK SURFING (PASSIVE): When out of combat, Taliyah builds up 20-45% bonus movement speed (depending on level) over 1 second whenever traveling near walls. Entering combat disables Rock Surfing for the next 2 seconds.

Q
THREADED VOLLEY (Q): Taliyah rips up the ground around her, firing a volley of five stone shards in a target direction which deal 70 / 95 / 120 / 145 / 170 (+45% of ability power) magic damage to the first target hit. Enemies hit by a Stone Shard take 50% damage from subsequent shards.

Casting Threaded Volley converts the area into worked ground for 45 seconds. While on Worked Ground, Threaded Volley's cost is reduced to 1 mana and only one rock is thrown.

W
SEISMIC SHOVE (W): Taliyah marks a target location and selects a direction. After a brief delay, the ground erupts, dealing 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 140 (+40% of ability power) magic damage to all enemies hit and and knocking them up for 1 second.

E
UNRAVELED EARTH (E): Taliyah scatters 18 boulders onto the ground before her, creating an Unraveled Earth, dealing 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150 (+40% of ability power) magic damage to all enemies hit.

The boulders remain for 4 seconds, slowing all enemies within the area by 20% (+4% per 100 AP). At the end of their duration, all remaining boulders explode, dealing Unraveled Earth's initial damage once more.

Enemies who dash over or are knocked through Unraveled Earth's boulders cause them to detonate instantly, each dealing 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 (+30% of ability power) magic damage, reduced by 15% per boulder hit, up to 45%.

R
WEAVER'S WALL (R): Taliyah briefly channels before summoning a massive wall of spiraling rock that tears through the Rift in a target direction and lasts for 5 seconds. Taliyah can reactivate Weaver's Wall while channeling to ride atop the wall as it emerges. Taking damage or inputting a move command in any direction will cut her ride short.
Pros/Cons
PROS

+ High Threaded Volley (Q) base damage, therefore strong pre-6
+ Her kit is PERFECT for kiting
+ Pick potential with Seismic Shove- Unraveled Earth (W-E) combo
+ Strong zoning and teamfighting
+ Strong roaming with Rock Surfing (Passive) and Weaver's Wall (R)
+ Very satisfying one-shotting potential with her full combo
+ She is super fun to play
+ Since her base damage is so high, once you get magic pen - you start your oneshotting
CONS

- Skill Shot Dependent
- Difficult to land combo
- No combat Ultimate or Passive
- Squishy af
- Worked Ground (circles that your Threaded Volley leaves) needs to be played around well in team fights for sustained damage.
- Against all-ins (mostly from assassins) if you miss your W Seismic Shove, you're dead.
- Staying healthy during her clear requires good kiting
Summoner Spells
CHILLING SMITE
I have found that Chilling Smite is most optimal to take on Taliyah. The immediate damage adds to your one shot potential and it can also be used to slow down opponents, better ensuring a successful Seismic Shove/ Unraveled Earth Combo. While I personally prefer Chilling Smite, Challenging Smite is still a viable option so honestly it is just up to your personal preference.

FLASH
You want to always take Flash, as its the best summoner spell in the game and can help you survive as a mage without a dash/leap etc. It can also help you get in range when pulling off combos or just in general get you out of sticky situations.
Runes
  • Cheap Shot
  • Cheap Shot gives Taliyah a decent extra bit of damage especially because most people that she attacks are going to have their movement impaired in some way. This rune is also on only a 4 second cooldown so it is able to be used quite frequently.
  • Zombie Ward
  • I used to always run Eyeball Collection in this slot but ever since I tried Zombie Ward I have really enjoyed using it. Every game I swap out my Stealth Ward to Oracle Lens, this will give you a Zombie Ward that lasts for about two minutes. I really do believe this rune is underrated and it helps provide a lot of residual vision for you and your team! Vision and Vision Denial wins games.
  • Ravenous Hunter
  • Ravenous Hunter is an ABSOLUTE MUST. It is singlehandedly the best rune on Taliyah and your whole kit, especially your Threaded Volley helps you heal so much with it. There are some games that I have more healing than champions with heals directly built into their kit... This rune is super underrated and don't forget that if you are dying to Igniteor something else be sure to use your abilities on nearby minions to heal through it!
  • Waterwalking
  • Waterwalking helps you out a lot with moving around the river - might not seem like a lot but I really think it makes a difference. Also, the additional AP received from being in the river goes well with the AP that you get from Absolute Focus. It helps out a lot during those inevitable river fights around crabs, dragons, and barons.

As for your additional three runes shards to choose, the most optimal that I have found are:
Slot 1: Attack Speed (+9% Attack Speed)
Slot 2: Adaptive Force (+6 AD or +10 AP)
Slot 3: Armor or Magic Resist (take what is needed based off of enemy junglers main damage output)

Keep in mind that runes can only do so much, and strong fundamentals and good game-sense in addition to mechanics are what secure kills.
Item Descriptions
Stalker's Blade - Runic Echoes
When Taliyah finishes her jungle item, YOU BETTER GET OUT OF HER WAY. It's a pretty big powerspike for her and she is very strong. AS mentioned earlier, Skirmisher's Sabre - Runic Echoes is also a viable option; however, I simply prefer the stalkers blade option.

Sorcerer's Shoes
We want this item for the Magic Penetration it provides, so that our abilities hit like TRUCKS. Since Taliyah has high base damage in her abilities (especially Threaded Volley), Magic Penetration suits her very well.

Oblivion Orb
Similarly to Sorcerer's Shoes, Oblivion Orb is very strong on Taliyah due to the Magic Penetration it provides. With both Sorcerer's Shoes and Oblivion Orb, Taliyah's abilities essentially deal true damage to enemy champions who have not built magic resistance as the magic pen tears through opponents base magic resistance. Only prioritize finishing Morellonomicon from Oblivion Orb if your opponents have a lot of healing or self-sustain (etc. Vladimir/ Soraka/ Sona/ Fiora/etc.)

Zhonya's Hourglass
Honestly such a great item, highly recommend getting vs strong AD opponents or high burst opponents (I get this *almost* every game). Gives you really solid outplay potential vs your opponent, as a well timed Stopwatch or Zhonya's Hourglass can win singlehandedly fights.

Void Staff
Ahhh, good ol' Void Staff. You can always count on it to make the enemies depressed when their magic resistance they are building just stops helping against your damage. Void Staff is a really cost effective item ONLY if the enemy team is building magic resistance.

Rabadon's Deathcap
I only get Rabadon's Deathcap before Void Staff if my opponents are not building any magic resistance, or if I am VERY, VERY fed.

Banshee's Veil
I only get Banshee's Veil When the enemy team has a LOT of magic damage. Usually if there are at least two-three enemies who are high magic damage dealers, then I will purchase Banshee's Veil.

Quicksilver Sash
Ah, it's one of those games isn't it? The enemy Skarner or Malzahar is always focusing you... time to suck it up and pay the QSS Tax! Quicksilver Sash is really effective at making Skarner, Malzahar or tbh any enemy champion with hard cc to be malding. Buying your QSS isn't enough, Don't forget to use it!

Jungle Pathing/Clearing
THINGS TO NOTE WHEN CLEARING ON TALIYAH:

-You always want to weave in as many auto attacks while clearing with Taliyah (and any champion for that matter)
-Kiting camps around reduces the amount of damage you take from them significantly
-Doing Ancient Krug (Krugs) as often as possible is super beneficial, as it gives the most experience out of any jungle camps also Taliyah deals good damage to them since they have negative magic resistance.

Best Jungle Path for Taliyah? This is probably the most common question I get - but a good question nevertheless. I have to be honest with you, here is not ONE GOOD PATH that lets you 1v9 every game. There is however a general path to go about that will get you a decent amount of exp and give you options for your next move.

The path that I go most frequently is Red Brambleback (Red Buff) --> Ancient Krug (Krugs) --> Crimson Raptor (Raptors). By doing those three camps, you will hit level 3 and should look to either gank middle or go to your Blue Sentinel (Blue Buff). After killing your blue buff, look to take the Rift Scuttler by your blue buff.

If your clear was not optimal and you don't think you have enough health to take your blue buff after clearing your Red->Krugs->Chickens then just recall after you hit level 3, and from base go straight to the Rift Scuttler outside of your blue buff. After securing the crab - then look for a gank if the lanes are giving you an opportunity for one, but if not, don't force anything and just continue farming your Gromp as well as Greater Murk Wolf (wolves).
Combos + Tips
Taliyah has one main combo that is the majority of all of her damage. On a target you would Seismic Shove (W) an opponent towards you into your Unraveled Earth (E) and Threaded Volley (Q) directly after, in the direction of the target. This deals huge burst damage that not many people will expect.

The majority of outplaying people is the way you use your Seismic Shove (W) as well as your Unraveled Earth (E). When possible, holding on to your W is beneficial, since it is your only peel tool. When faced with an enemy champion that you may be attacking or ganking, you want to deal as much damage with your Threaded Volley (Q), Unraveled Earth (E), as well as auto-attacks before you use your Seismic Shove (W). The reason for this is, most people know to expect the Seismic Shove after you put down the Unraveled Earth. Most opponents will try hard to predict the dodge on your W before you even cast it, giving you a lot of extra damage as well as preventing them from escaping. TLDR: basically they juke themselves to death.

When faced with enemies who have dashes, you always want to get your Unraveled Earth (E) out ASAP, since you won't even have to hit your Seismic Shove (W) to deal a lot of damage to them. If an opponent with a dash dashes through Taliyah's "minefield" they take A LOT of damage.

Although Taliyah's Weaver's Wall (R) is used primarily for ganking or counter-ganking lanes, it can also be used as a quick escape if your flash is down and no enemies are able to directly attack you within the cast time of the Ult. Don't be afraid to expend it, especially if it saves your life.

One other powerful way to use Weaver's Wall is to siege! Taliyah's ult is a powerful zoning tool that can be used anywhere however if your team is sieging an inhibitor turret in the top or bot lane, If you cast your Weaver's Wall from inside the jungle diagonally, you can zone off enemies from defending the tower!

Taliyah has the best synergy with teammates who have lots of hard CC. This is because when your opponents can be locked down, it ensures a W-E-Q combo on them easily. Playing with champions such as Pantheon, Leona, Malzahar etc are super beneficial in landing your combo.

People who are having trouble clearing the jungle should practice kiting in practice mode. Say something like game knowledge is important but Taliyah is a very mechanically intensive champ.
Conclusion
This concludes my first guide on Mobafire - be gentle but also ASK QUESTIONS.

If you're interested in seeing some Taliyah gameplay feel free to check out my stream and drop a follow! - https://www.twitch.tv/fikilol

I've been playing Taliyah for years and have played her extensively in all roles, however currently only play her in the jungle. If you've struggled with certain matchups LET ME KNOW (via twitch/twitter/mobafire comments etc.)

As I said before this is my favorite champ and I just want to spread my love and success with Taliyah with all of you!

This guide is still considered a work in progress (for me) and I will continue to update it whenever I can. I'm looking to you as the future of the Taliyah community to ask the tough questions that I might not have thought of.
