Season 9 Jax Guide! The Fast Boi (9.12)

By Laverenz
Introduction
Hello! My name is Laverenz and welcome to my Jax guide. I stream every now and then on www.twitch.tv/laverenz

I might not be a grandmaster on Jax, but I have picked him on quite lately. Normally i am playing in diamond division, but i use my smurf to pick up Jax. To be honest, Jax is really overpowered with this build.
Jax is an easy champion to pick up. He has one of the easiest set of abilities, if not THE easiest. His abilities are so simple. Dodge, dodge, dodge, kill. On my smurf, which is on gold division, i have about 50 games in a row on Jax, and only 4 losses, and 8 games where i don't carry. Let's get to it!

*NOTE*: English is not my primary langauge, so please excuse me if any mistakes gets made. Thanks :)

Jax's lore Back to Top
Jax sat cross-legged at the center of the bridge with his long-hafted polearm resting on his knees. Demacia had not changed much since he had last traveled this way, but that didn’t surprise him. Its people zealously protected their borders, which had turned them into pretty decent fighters. Well, some of them anyway, he thought, wiping a spot of blood from the softly glowing head of the lamppost. He flicked the droplet over the parapet to the river below and reached into his robe to pull out his third hard-boiled egg of the day. Tapping it on the cobbles, he slowly peeled the shell as he heard the warriors at the end of the bridge try to decide which one of them would face him next.

Jax lifted his mask and bit into the egg. He took a deep breath, tasting sun-ripened crops on the wind and freshly turned earth from the expanse of farmland stretching to every horizon. Jax sighed; to see a realm at peace made him homesick for a land that no longer existed. He shook off the chill of memory, knowing thoughts of Icathia would only distract him. His robes were heavy, but the sun’s warmth didn’t reach the mottled and oddly hued skin beneath. No part of his flesh was visible, which was probably just as well. He wasn’t even sure what his skin looked like anymore.

A cold wind scudded over the snowcapped mountains to the north and a distant storm disgorged rain over distant fields and settlements. Where Jax came from, there was little in the way of clouds, and even less rain. Perhaps the storm would come south and make the cobbles of the bridge slippery. That might make this more challenging for him.

It would also make things more difficult for his opponents. And perhaps that was no bad thing. After all, a warrior worthy of fighting at his side in the battles against the monsters from beyond would need to be adaptable. He heard the clatter of armor and the whisper of a blade cutting air.

“Stand and face me” ordered a powerful voice.

Jax held up a finger while he finished his egg. He licked his lips then settled his mask back over his face before looking up at the warrior standing before him. The man was powerfully built, broad of shoulder and thick of arm. Armored head to foot in gleaming warplate of burnished steel, he carried a double-edged, hand-and-a-half sword.

And looked like he knew how to use it. Jax approved.

“You seem like a man who can hew ironbirch trees all day and still have energy left for a tavern brawl” said Jax.

“I’ll not waste words on you, monster” said the warrior, assuming the same fighting stance all the others had. Jax sighed, disappointed the defeat of the fifteen men before this one hadn’t taught them anything.

“Monster?” he said, rising to his feet in one smooth motion. “I could show you monsters, but I fear you wouldn’t live long enough to tell anyone what a real monster looks like.”

He swung his lamppost around to loosen the muscles in his shoulders. Not that he needed to, but he’d been fighting, on and off, for the last four hours and it might make the man facing him feel like he at least had a chance of winning this duel.

“For Demacia!” shouted the swordsman and he attacked with the same tired, predictable strikes all the others had. The man was fast and strong enough to wield his sword in one hand. Jax swayed aside from the first blow, ducked the second and parried the third. He spun inside the swordsman’s guard and hammered his elbow against the side of his helmet. The metal buckled and the man went down on one knee with a grunt of pain. Jax gave him a moment to still the ringing in his head. The man tore off his helm and dropped it to the bridge.

Blood matted the side of his head, but Jax was impressed at how the man controlled his anger. Demacians had always been sticklers for discipline, so he was glad to see that hadn’t changed. The man took a steadying breath and attacked again, a series of blisteringly fast cuts that went high and low, a mixture of sweeping slashes, lighting thrusts and overhead cuts. Jax parried them all, his lamppost in constant motion as it deflected the Demacian’s blade and delivered stinging, bruising ripostes to the man’s arms and legs. He feinted left and hooked his lamppost around the opponent’s legs, putting him flat on his back. He jabbed the butt of his post into the man’s belly, doubling him up and leaving him gasping for air.

“Had enough yet?” asked Jax. “I can swap hands if it makes it easier.”

“A Demacian would rather die than take succor from an enemy” said the warrior, lurching to his feet. The man’s stoic facade was crumbling in the face of Jax’s mockery, and when he attacked again, it was with a ferocity untempered by discipline and skill. Jax ducked a risky beheading strike and switched to a one-handed grip on his lamppost. He spun his weapon under the man’s sword and rolled his wrist. The Demacian warrior’s sword was wrenched from his grasp and flipped through the air. Jax caught it deftly in his free hand.

“Nice little weapon” he said, spinning the blade in a dazzling series of master fencer’s strokes. “Lighter than it looks.”

The Demacian drew his dagger and rushed him. Jax shook his head at his foolishness. He threw the sword from the bridge and sidestepped a series of blisteringly fast thrusts. He ducked a sweeping cut and caught a thunderous right cross in his open palm. He nodded toward the river.

“I hope you can swim” he said, and twisted his wrist, lifting the armored warrior from his feet and flipping him over the bridge’s parapet. The man splashed down into the river and Jax planted his lamppost on the cobbles.

“Who’s next?” he said.

“That would be me” said a woman dismounting a gray gelding at the end of the bridge. Her horse’s flanks were lathered with sweat, her cloak dusty from a hard ride. She wore a silversteel breastplate, and a long-bladed sword was scabbarded at her hip.

She marched past the men at the end of the bridge and strode toward him, moving with a perfect economy of motion, utterly in balance and supremely confident in her skill. Her features were angular and patrician, framed by dark hair streaked with crimson. Her eyes were cold and unforgiving. They promised only death.

“Who are you?” asked Jax, intrigued.

“My name is Fiora of House Laurent” she said, drawing her weapon, a dueling saber that gleamed with a perfect edge. “And this is my bridge.”

Jax grinned beneath his mask.

Finally, an opponent worth fighting!

Jax Short Story: Grandmaster At Arms:
The self-styled Grandmaster at Arms known as Jax is a mysterious warrior and sometime mercenary renowned for his prowess in combat and biting sarcasm. While exceptionally skilled with virtually every conceivable weapon, he often chooses to fight with a mundane implement, such as a lamppost, in order to give his opponents a sporting chance.

As you can read above, Jax is a really cool champion, who has a nice and beatifully written lore. Definetely a cool champion, you should really try him out. Fun to play :D
Runes Back to Top
I would always go for Press the Attack, as it synergizes so well with his abilities. Everything on Jax relies on his third basic attacks. It is easy to gank for Jax, when Press The Attack is used, because you will have an easy time to oneshot to laners, giving either you or your teammate a kill. The rest of the runes are self-explanatory.
Pros / Cons Back to Top
Pros

+ High mobility with Leap Strike
+ Can stun AoE
+ Can give himself armor and magic resist
+ Attack speed steroid
+ One-shot potential

Jax is a great pick in solo queue. He is an easy champion to solo carry with, as he can fight each and every champion 1v1 throughout all of the game basically. Also, Jax is one of the "Right Click Champions", which makes him easy to play. He is great at catching carries on the enemy team with his. Also, Jax has always been and will probably always be a god tier champion, as his abilities works so well together, and can't be outmatched with any other ability set in the game basically. Counter Strike.
Cons

- Weak when behind
- Vulnerable to binds/slows
- Needs good early game
- Counter Strike removeable with Quicksilver Sash + Cleanse
- Easily falls behind when counter-jungle'd

As per all champions, Jax has his strengths, and his weaknesses. Compared to other junglers, Jax's late game can be considered extremely strong, if ahead, but can be weak if behind. Well it's hard to get back in the game if behind from early game. Jax's Counter Strike can be removed with Quicksilver Sash, which makes it easy to counter. His stun is interruptable, It's easy to get away from, as soon as the enemy team sees Jax, the carries can just flash away, or use movement abilities, to escape getting caught by Counter Strike.
Creeping / Jungling Back to Top
Always go full clears. Start at the buff where you can get most help from botlane. Go for getting level-advantage over the enemy jungler. If you're higher level than enemy jungler, you can; outsmite, outjungle, fight them, put more pressure to the game etc. In general, just a bigger lead and domination. Save smite for hard jungle camps (Raptors, Golems, Red/Blue buff.
Farming Back to Top
Jax is a hypercarry, which makes him able to carry hard lategame. If you can keep farming up, until lategame, you can always fight. Farm up a lot, splitpush a lot, dominate a lot. Mid/lategame is Jax's biggest strenght.
Abilities Back to Top
You can see the ability maxing order in the top of the guide. For this chapter, I'd like to add some more important combos and tactics to use your abilities. The normal combo when engaging a fight, would be E > R > Q > (Proc your stun by reactivating your E) > Basic attack 2 times > W > Use your spell as they are ready after this. You need to be really fast to land such combos with timed 3rd attacks, as you get A LOT of attack speed with this build, so remember to be quick on the keyboard, and count!

Jax's Passive :
Jax's consecutive basic attacks continuously increase his Attack Speed.

Jax's Q :
Jax leaps toward a unit. If they are an enemy, he strikes them with his weapon.

Jax leaps to target unit, dealing 65/105/145/185/225 (+100% bonus Attack Damage) (+60% Ability Power) physical damage if it is an enemy.

Jax's W :
Jax charges his weapon with energy, causing his next attack to deal additional damage.

Jax charges his weapon with energy, causing his next basic attack or Leap Strike to deal an additional 40/75/110/145/180 (+60% Ability Power) Magic Damage.

Jax's E :
Jax's combat prowess allows him to dodge all incoming attacks for a short duration and then quickly counterattack, stunning all surrounding enemies.

Jax enters a defensive stance for up to 2 seconds, dodging all incoming basic attacks and taking 25% less damage from area of effect abilities. After 2 seconds or if activated again, Jax stuns surrounding enemies for 1 second and deals 55/80/105/130/155 (+50% bonus Attack Damage) physical damage to them.
Counter Strike deals 20% more damage for each attack Jax dodged (max: 100% increased damage).

Jax's R :
Every third consecutive attack deals additional Magic Damage. Additionally, Jax can activate this ability to strengthen his resolve, increasing his Armor and Magic Resist for a short duration.

Passive: Every third consecutive strike Jax deals {{ damagecalc }} additional magic damage.
Active: Jax strengthens his resolve, granting him {{ armorcalc }} Armor and {{ mrcalc }} Magic Resist for {{ activeduration }} seconds.
Ganking Back to Top
I hate saying this, but you HAVE to be greedy. Focus on taking the kills when ganking. Be selfish! If you can get a lot of kills easrly, it's basically GGWP, as no one can fight you, and you are able to win games really fast. Ganking top and midlane are the best lanes to gank, as there is only one champion to kill, which makes you able to use full burst on them compared to botlane ganks. Botlane ganks are quite hard, as the enemy support most likely has CC, which is a big counter for Jax.
Team fights Back to Top
In team fights you should, with this build, always look for easy target to kill. Obviously the ADC is the easiest target to kill, but they most likely have a support, who can peel for them, making them unkillable. Therefore; the midlaner is a big priority, aswell as the enemy jungler, if he is an assassin jungler.
Early-game (Minute 1-10) Back to Top
Early-game should be spent farming up for late game. See if you can spot out some easy lanes to gank, of course taking the kill, and get fed. If the enemy champion is no threat to you, go counter-jungle as you can fight them most likely. You can play a bit aggressive early game, as your Counter Strike is such an overpowered ability. Dragon control is in your favour, as Jax has a lot of solo-objective-potential.
Mid-game (Minute 10-25) Back to Top
In Jax's mid-game you need to have a lot of focus on picking out carries , aswell as getting yourself fed. Dragon control is also an easy objective to contain, as you should be able to 1v1 every champion at this point of the game, which makes their jungler afraid to contest it. If you're botlane/midlane is helping you with dragon, the enemy team will most likely not try to contest it. Rift herald is VERY important. If you can capture it, solo it aswell, in minute 12-17 and bring it either toplane or midlane, you should be able to get a tower or two, depending on how long your team has pushed in already.
Late-game (Minute 25-∞) Back to Top
Late game determines whether you're a good or bad Jax player. Always look out for objectives like Dragon/Baron, aswell as catches on the enemy midlaner, adc or support, as it might win you the game. Walk around in their jungle a lot, as you can fight the enemy jungler. You should try to steal every buff on the enemy team. Try to lock down the enemy team as much as possible. Punish them for their mistakes. Splitpushing is also a strenght for Jax, but be careful not to splitpush to your own demise. Splitpushing can LOSE games, if done incorrectly.
