Your aim is to be able to sprint from the shadows at enemy champions, jump on them, pound them quite hard, be tough so you can keep pounding regardless of enemy resistance and keep them locked down so your buddies can finish off the gang bang.

Early Mob Boots lets you get your sprint on so you can catch dem *******.

Ancient Golem makes you big so you can take the hurt when them and their friends try to stop what you are doing to them.

Icy Fist is your key item. You get it third. Once you have jumped on them, you have enough time to quickly fist them. Once you have fisted them, any attempt to run becomes futile. This fist of yours will also inflict a large amount of damage as it strikes home, potentially even killing them. Brutal stuff. If you don't finish them, your mates will now be able to.

Fourth item you have a choice. After Mobos, Golem and Fist, the rest is up to you. I like to gain the ability to turret dive at this point so I usually go for GA or Ohmwrecker. Ohmwrecker is only viable if you want to be constantly diving turrets to roll on your snowball. GA is better if you want the ability to mid game dive but are not doing it as often. If you are not diving, ignore these items and buy Sunfire or Spirit Visage.

Fifth and sixth items should be full tank items. If you bought a diving item fourth, make these two items Sunfire and Spirit Visage. The order of purchase for these two items depends on the enemy's comp and kill distribution. If you didn't buy a diving item, your sixth item can be personal preference. Locket may be your best bet. Randuin's is an option, however you already have AOE slow. Frozen heart is another option, however only buy this vs an AD heavy team.

Don't forget to buy wards throughout the game to keep vision of key areas. I like to keep a ward in the bush right beside the enemy wraiths, from your first or second back onward, as it gives you a general idea of where the enemy jungler is at all times. This lets you outplay them haaaard ;D

Skill Sequence

Max e first for fast clear and maximum gank damage. Keep in mind that in order to get this damage you must land your e on the enemy, then keep them locked down with your w so that the second chunk of e damage will hit them. If you can't do this, maxing e first is a bad idea... Heck if you can't do this you shouldn't be playing Maokai. I prefer to max w second for the longer snare duration, as the single target damage is similar to q and you don't need any more AOE at this point.
