I had chess for a year in primary school and the class was pretty elaborate. We got free membership to the chess club in the city and we went there every saturday iirc to play, and we had a coach and I even played a few competitions. I learned all the basics but it turns out teaching 10 year olds to play chess isn't so productive and I didn't really learn much there in the end, in terms of strategy and whatnot. Since then I haven't had a lot of opportunity to play chess except with my dad or sometimes online, but I'm definitely better than I was as a kid.

Damn, chess classes and all! That's really cool. I used to play a lot against my dad and lost every single game. To this day I only beat him once, though to be fair, we haven't played in years. Now-a-days I play online, though I get my butt handed to me quite often. I am currently hovering around an 1100 rating (which is pretty beginner-ish).

The look on his face tho when I win

check out my MF guide!
I can't really say if my dad is good or not (since I certainly was not back when I still played against him), but my grandpa is a decent enough player. Same deal used to happen when I was a kid playing against him: I lost every single game. This last Summer when we got to play a couple times it almost always ended in stalemate (King + Pawn(s) endgame into Bare Kings), which was rather funny.
Same over here. None of my friends play chess very well and they certainly don't want to try their luck against me. I agree that over the internet isn't as entertaining, but it still holds the initial charm that pulled me into the game in the first place.

I used to love playing chess but sadly no one else did so I had no one to play with. Nowadays when I could use the Internet to play anyway I don't actually like it as much, so, unlucky.

I have also played Go extensively, albeit versus a computer... and it was in fact Ponnuki Go, which is way easier. In the end, it didn't quite stick to me.
Regarding openings, there are so many and all with an objective in mind, that it is impossible to learn them all by playing/reading alone. What I'm currently doing is stick with one opening and try my best to achieve victory. Wayward Queen Attack has worked pretty well so far if I'm playing White.
