Well I'm into action-style, thinkers. No sci-fi stuff with much robots or such.
Madoka Magica, full metal alchemist, Death Note, Hellsing. Those kind of animes are good.

Code Ge*** is wonderful. It does have some mecha elements but those are irrelevant when it comes to something as masterful as Code Ge***.
Don't ignore this anime because it has robots, you will like it, I promise.

I think I'll sweep the dust off my old anime folder and rewatch Serial Experiments Lain. Watched it like 4 years ago, totally forgot about how it was.
I've got that one on my to-watch-list. It seems very interesting. I like clever things.
Do give an analysis of some kind when you're done.

Good for you. Go have a look at Nichijou. I have a feeling that it'll be a perfect fit.
